Will Indiana Jones 5 be the last film in the series?

Would Disney really give up on such a lucrative franchise?

If it isn't the last film, will Indy 6 have a new lead character? Will Harrison Ford be a part of the film at all?

    Let's start a discussion.

I don't think so, no. I think this will get audiences excited about Indiana Jones again and they may do a hand-off film as the Sixth installment.

This is a tough one. I mean I can see the 5th movie being a send off to the character or a passing of the torch but Indiana Jones is a character not a title. How do you make an Indiana Jones 6 without Indiana Jones? In what time frame does the future installments take place, do they continue into the 60's or 70's? My gut tells me that they will reboot the character with a new actor, and the complaints will come for whoever they pick; same as if they pass it off to a new character but they are still calling the series Indiana Jones.

Hard to say! They've got Harrison back for at least 1 more film, I could see them doing a franchise reboot by passing the hat and whip on to a successor and continuing the series in the 1960s and 70s... think something like Mad Men meets Indiana Jones. The series would still be period based with the fun costumes and settings and the world at that time was in the middle of the Cold War so there is plenty of intrigue and espionage to play with. I don't know, I'd definitely be curious to see how they would continue the series without recasting Indy.

Another thing I have considered is rebooting the series but setting it pre-Temple of Doom, something more in tune with the Young Indy Chronicles. Imagine an adventure series set during WW1 following a young Indiana Jones before he was an archaeologist and professor. There would not be a need for it to be heavy on the supernatural, just a popcorn big picture WW1 romp. I could see the follow up taking Indy out on an archaeological adventure with Dr. Ravenwood. If they were to recast the series in this way, by giving audiences another adventure with Harrison Ford and then follow it up with a film set well before the original films with a character who isn't quite the Indiana Jones we know and love yet I could see audiences following him for 3 or 4 Temple of Doom prequel movies.

Man I'm excited they're bringing back Indy!

I think they'll continue with a new actor and new character, and Indy 5 will be the hand-off movie. I don't necessarily think that means Indy dies in 5, because they could bring him back in a Sean Connery-esque role for 6, but I think 5 will introduce us to a new character (not Shia/Mutt) and 6 will be that character's lead film. If that ultimately tanks, they can either retire the franchise or reboot it with a new actor (maybe whoever they get to play young Han).

Well, Steven Speilberg has said that he doesn't want anyone other than Harrison Ford to play Indiana Jones at the theatres. He said if the series was to continue, they would do a passing of the torch to a new character. That doesn't rule out an animated series though.

True; the whole "Young Han as Young Indy" thing is just a thought I had, I doubt they'd ever really do that. An animated series could be interesting, though I'd hope for something stylistically different from Rebels/TCW.

Ultimately it's not up to Spielberg or Ford. Lucas already walked away. It's all up to Disney and wether they see profit in bringing thirties serial type action movies to (home) theatres. It's about dollars. Love for film and artistry will always play second fiddle to that given the genre we're dealing with here.
Sometimes we get lucky though. SW7 has proven just as much.

Ford will be too old to be doing "Indy 5". He was nearly too old for "The Force Awakens".

Yeah, that was more realistic to me than a full Nazi regiment in 1936 Egypt.

I'd like to see him team up with a certain Lord Croft in a continuation of the whole Ancient Aliens theme against a hidden Nazi race as allegedly encountered by Admiral Richard Byrd in Operation High Jump in 1947. As a general theme it was pretty plausible, most people I think can agree that the concept for Crystal Skull was good, it was the execution and Shia LeBeouf that sullied it.

I think its success - or lack thereof - will determine whether more get made, and it will be written in such a way that the ending can stand on its own while leaving the door open if necessary.

The only problem is finding someone with enough charm and charisma to take over the main role of Harrison Ford, almost an impossible task.

They could film indy 5 and 6 back to back and then do some in-universe building with other characters just like with star wars .
