Could this be the future of star wars? An amazing new trilogy!! Or is it. I personally think this could go very good or extremely down hill. Tell me what you guys think. Is the trilogy gonna be amazing or will it go downhill fast. Is there only going to be 3 episodes like every other trilogy? Will this be something totally new that we have never seen before? A whole new approach to the Star wars universe?

Here am I waiting for IX! I love seeing Johnson write a new trilogy, as long as the Skywalker saga comes to an end with IX. It would almost be like KOTOR but then....without KOTOR I'd reckon.

It has to be different and yet familiar. Balance and energy. A force.

I don't think we know nearly enough about RJ's trilogy to really say much on it now- but we do know it's Star Wars, so I'd say that even after the schism of TLJ, they've still got a huge built in audience.

Everything can be a failure. Just because I like TLJ it doesn't mean that I'll like these films or people who dislike Episode VIII might end up liking these films. It's too early to decide. The only thing that can be said right now is to hope for the best and to expect the worst. :)

    Pessimism warning.

Depends what you mean by "a bust." I don't think any modern Star Wars movie will ever be embraced by the entire fandom. We're at a place where everyone has a different idea of what Star Wars is. Some people want to see the new movies be like the Original Trilogy, some people want them to be like the Prequels, some people (God bless them) want them to be like KOTOR. Unless fans can let go of expectations, and more than that, realize that nobody can tarnish the good Star Wars that already exists by adding new movies, they will never be able to have peace new Star Wars going ahead.

But if by "a bust" you mean critically or financially, that just waits to be seen. There's no reason to assume so, given the track record of Johnson and the track record of the franchise. I think, at this point, freshness can only help. We've had Stormtroopers in the last three movies and, presumably, the next two or three. I think people will start craving something fresh from the franchise, and all we know about this is that it will be fresh.

Every movie or, in this case, a trilogy has equal chances of being a disaster or a masterpiece. And most of the movies fall somewhere in between. With the current culture and Star Wars fandom, it's hard to predict how things will go.

However, regardless how people individually felt about TLJ, I personally see how much care, work and thought Johnson put into it. There is no reason to think he will do any less for his own trilogy. Additionally, there is no reason to believe that he will get any less support from Lucasfilm and its Story Group. So, he has all the tools for success on his side. Everything else depends on his imagination - if the story is compelling enough, it will be a success. If not, it won't be. It's that simple.

There was never and there will never be a movie that will make everyone happy. That's even more true for Star Wars as it means so many different things to many different people. But, if Johnson manages to engage the majority of general audience, it will be a success.

Nice feedback guys thanks. What about this being the future of star wars? Or a few other things that I listed. I clearly understand that it's to early but it's just what you guys truly think about it so far. Just speculation.

You know, before RJ's trilogy was even announced, I remember thinking this past summer about how it would be cool to have a different sort of trilogy after Episode 9. In my mind, it would've been KOTOR-related, and would've tied in to Snoke's origins. After that trilogy had wrapped (presumably also buffered with a spinoff between each film) we could return to Rey and the gang, much older than we left them.

Almost everything in my idea seems laughable now, but I think it brings up an interesting point- RJ's trilogy could be a diversion, but the real time galaxy needs to return at some point, because that's one of the coolest things about Star Wars. I know a lot of people say Star Wars is the story of the Skywalkers, but I think it's really interesting that the Galaxy that first was seen by us in 1977 has aged basically in real time, not taking prequels or spinoffs into account. It would be neat to visit it again in 6-10 years after Ep9 is released to see how it's changed again.

Camera pans down a long hall away in a tracking shot as kids follow an elderly man
"Generations ago, we were without a hero. But by the grace of the force, we were given three."
Camera turns to show three busts of Han, Leia and Luke.
*Chewie left out for continuity sake of ignoring him

    Yeah, between 7 and 11%.

Through my eyes, I'm just too damn optimistic to think it'd be a bust.

We are already asking this question with literally 0 knowledge of what it will be about? If the people who hated TLJ have their way it might be but they don't matter as TLJ was still HIGHLY successful.

Amazing how "every other trilogy" has three episodes, I wonder why that is? :)

The challenge for the "Galaxy's Edge" trilogy will be to create a new tangent for the brand to explore that's new, fresh and liberated from the old, but also familiar and recognizable.

How does one create something new, while still appeasing a massive audience who pays out big money for the old?

It also isn't the entire farm, in other words if Rian's vision doesn't work, there are all kinds of other tangents and properties the Star Wars brand will explore. The brand is the most successful it's been in its history now, so there are plenty of opportunities and avenues to explore.

Expect a LOT MORE Star Wars to come in the decade ahead, because it is bank at the box office and the most wildly successful cinematic franchise in history.

rian johnson needs a cowriter a a strong creative voice to keep him in check. He also needs to be shuffled away from big creative decisions in this trilogy. The story group also needs to be disbanded....for many of the questionable decisions in TLJ can be traced to them, last jedi was the movie that they had the most control over and it is also the least liked star wars movie since disney bought the franchise. expanded universe writers have no place in the star wars creative process
