Theatrically speaking (not including video games), the opening crawl has been limited to episodes 1-9. Do you think the opening crawl will be retired after IX? Do you want it to be?

The crawl and accompanying music have always been (for me at least) an OT thing, that brings back childhood memories. I love R1 and Solo and itwon’t bother me if future movies, that have nothing to do with my childhood, will have some other defining gimmick.
Think about XX Century Fox logo, that was also part of the experience. It’s no longer there and nobody seems to care.

i'd like to think that benioff & weiss, and RJ will come up with their own 'thing' in regard to the opening of their movies.. and whoever else makes Star Wars movies in the future.

whether it's something similar to the Saga crawl, or something else altogether.. i don't mind, just be creative !

Even more reason all Star Wars movies should have crawls. Solo and Rogue One need new editions with crawls added.

I'm guessing Spider-Man: Far From Home will have some kind of crawl... probably a wall based one ;)

Hard to tell... I think it was a very good decision not to use crawls in standalones. It makes the Saga openings special and leaves freedom for potential standalones that wouldn't need a crawl.

As of now, I guess it depends on whether a potential Episode X is on the table. If they know for sure there will be an Episode X in like 10 years (and I assume they know that), they might save crawls for this. If not, I can imagine them moving crawls to the series of films that will become the main one after the Saga is over.

I don't want the crawl to retire forever and I don't think it has to be restricted just to Saga episodes (it always was a nice touch in games), but I also don't want them to overuse it and I don't feel like every SW movie needs it.

I have wondered this myself. I hope they keep using the crawl. To me, SW works much better as a film series than standalone movies. I hope future movies are in a series format and use the crawl.

I agree. My pet theory for IX is that JJ is actually going to end more of the smaller story lines in this trilogy whilst setting up a new "BIG" one. I think the biggest shift by Diney/LFL after VIII will be scraping this as a contained trilogy and in a few years we will find out X-XII are coming. Thus the crawl will live on. :D

    This topic (in my own opinion) is one that has been over-thought on various levels because of a couple of strategically placed statements that so many have taken literally, and I believe that those making the aforementioned statements know it....let me explain;

First of all, we've been told that IX will effectively be the end of the Skywalker story, which I think is a broad statement...on purpose. I think that the full meaning of said statement is that it will be the end of the direct stories of Luke, Leia, and Anakin, HOWEVER the story of the following family member(s) will go on in the next trilogy...and there will be one to come.

We have to keep in mind, that we've already been through two movies that have barely developed the main characters of Kylo/Ben and Rey, because if you think about it, they're really not a lot more developed now since when we first met them in TFA which I think could be (perhaps) an unintended oversight on the behalf of the film makers.

That being said, I expect that we're going to have to have a time jump going into IX that (in my mind) will be the only way to see them "matured" into the characters that will close this trilogy, much like the end of the OT, which will set up a new story arc for the next trilogy.

I personally think that we'd be foolish to believe that IX will be the end of the saga trilogies, and as a result....the crawls.

I don't expect any of the stand-alone movies or offshoot trilogies to have the crawl, but more of their own type of openings, because the crawl is a "saga thing" that should remain just that.....

...but yes, there will be more crawls...in the remaining saga trilogies to come. :)

I agree. I'm more convinced now than i've ever been that instead of VII-IX being a "hard" end to the saga (thus the crawl), VII-IX is essentially the end of the skywalker saga, but "Part 1" of a new saga.

I agree. I think IX will be the end of the Skywalker saga. That does not mean that there won’t be new different sagas. The term Skywalker saga did not come to be until the start of the sequel trilogy. That indicates to me that Lucasfilm had already decided that new sagas were going to be introduced in the future and they needed a way to differentiate the them. I think a number of years down the line we may see a new trilogy/series of movies with ST characters in it. However, given the fate of Kylo in IX, this may be the last we see of the Skywalkers. This would be the start of a new saga separate from the storyline wrapped up in IX.

As far as the crawl is concerned, we may very well see it in the Benioff and Weiss series of movies as this could very well be a new saga (The Old Republic Series maybe?). We may also see a crawl in the RJ trilogy which I also think will be a new saga (I’ve ruined your childhood and I’m back for more saga? JK).

The Rogue One intro never really felt right to me. Perhaps it was too soon to not have a crawl. I never felt that the intro made me understand anything or set anything up for the movie. It could have been completely left out and the movie would have been the same. With Solo I felt that the blue flash style crawl was very acceptable. It did what the crawls did for me in the past, yes it is different, but still felt like Star Wars. I get they are going to try a few things. I guess for me with playing video games and seeing the crawl almost everywhere in Star Wars I felt it was part of Star Wars not just the Skywalker Saga. I felt the change was a bit off. As for whether they use the crawl again, I could care less after what they already have done. Though I will now always have an overall disappointment in Disney trying to change something that wasn't broken.

No doubt it will have a purpose in future movies. Always gets anticipated on how the first scene will play out.

I would hope not. I think they did a crawl without actually doing a crawl for Solo, the whole time I was thinking "just do the crawl".

Typically Star Wars movies start in the midst of some sort of trouble and the crawl gives the viewer an basic understanding so they don't feel immediately lost. I like that concept and I don't think it should be reserved for just the Skywalker Saga.

Not if they go with a X - X11 like George Lucas has intended .
