What do you guys reckon - will Luke Skywalker make use of his somewhat iconic green lightsaber at some point in the remaining two episodes?

If he is going to be the "Yoda" character of the new trilogy, then perhaps not, as we never saw Yoda with a lightsaber at all in Ep V and Ep VI.

I personally hope that he does though, an OP Force-wielding, lightsaber swinging Jedi Master Luke Skywalker would be incredible to see after all these years.

I definitely think he will, and I'm pretty sure not only do we want to see that iconic saber again the directors probably do as well.

I would like to, but I'm thinking no...
Before watching the movie I thought this because he would take the Yoda role and Yoda did not need one in the OT,
now I'm thinking that maybe he doesn't even have it anymore... If he went missing because of the academy failure, he might have gotten rid of it...

    Forget Episode VIII and IX.

Episode 7 was supposed to be the film that reinvigorated the franchise....

So he should have used his saber in TFA....

But JJ/Disney were too concerned about Luke upstaging all the younger characters, so instead of a badass scene with him doing some Luke Skywalker type blast, instead we get him living as a recluse on some deserted island and doing absolutely NOTHING.

One more reason, on top of many other reasons, that TFA was a failure.

I understand that you didn't like the film, but record-setting box office results and an exceptional number of positive critic reviews suggest this franchise is as reinvigorated as it could possibly get.

    the prequels failed, too....
because Luke Skywalker wasn't there to do any Luke Skywalker-type stuff.

    *rolleyes*

Plot, story and a new generation of characters aren't important to you are they? Lemme, guess. It should have been Luke on Starkiller fighting Kylo with his green light saber while Rey and Finn lay on the ground defeated. Then Luke should have grabbed his X-wing, saved Poe and blew up the oscillator. Finally, before the planet explodes, Luke rushes to the bottom of the shaft Han fell into, force catches his body before it hits the ground, and force heals Han's light saber wound as Luke says "that's another one you owe me old man".

    Would that make you happy?

Did Luke got his saber back before leaving the death Star? This is unclear although I believe in that case that he would have build another green one...

You can see his lightsaber on his belt as he walks into the Ewok village and hugs Leia at the end of the movie :)

Let go of your JJ and Disney hate and just give the hell up.

It's clearly reinvigorated the franchise. It has broken dozens of box office records, is set to become one of the highest grossing films ever, has recieved universal acclaim from critics and fans alike.

It has introduced the franchise to a new generation, not through stupid trade disputes and frelling Jar Jar, but through the same magic as the OT, the films everyone wants the series to remain like.

You didn't like it. Fine. Just because you didn't like it, that doesn't make it blast. I think you need to learn that.

The new characters are well established now. Rey is awesome. Now, its time to see what a Jedi Master can do in a one on one with a true Sith Lord. I want to see Luke go all Jedi on a Sith Lord. I know that Obi beat Anakin, but even then it seemed Anakin was more powerful. Even the "chosen one" should not have been as powerful as a Jedi Master at that stage of his development. I am sorry, but at some point in the modern era, I need to see a Jedi that is more powerful than a Dark side user. Luke needs to pull the lightsaber out and kick some dark side tail.

I like how TFA was a failure both because it was such a "rehash" only meant to get butts in seats (how dare they?!) and because it didn't show us all the old characters doing all the old stuff.

Perhaps IX will end with a homage to RotS with Luke taking on Snoke and Rey taking on Kylo Ren (assuming he stays on the dark side), similar to Obi Wan fighting Anakin and Yoda fighting Sidious.

The "iconic" saber is the blue one handed down by his father; the one that now seems to belong to Rey.

Pretty sure this will be the case.

Now that we're heading into the second and third films in the trilogy, the action completely belongs to the new heroes. Han was the on-the-scene mentor figure in TFA. The legacy characters should stay in the background now going forward.

So... We are asked a question about Episode 8 (conveniently enough in the Episode 8 forum), and you talk about your JJ-hate and how crappy VII was. Hmmm.... Interesting.
