What are the chances that older OT fans will enjoy Rogue One more than TFA? While reading the boards this morning, and seeing things like using deleted scenes and Darth Vader in action shots, it made me wonder if the subject matter of the OT would take me back to my childhood more so than TFA did.

    Thoughts?

that's interesting. as an "older" fan who saw the OT in the theatres when it premiered, TFA absolutely took me right back to my childhood.
so perfectly, in fact, that it's kind of a scary little Star Wars miracle for me (i'd long given up the franchise for dead).

and currently i'm really skeptical of Rogue One.

    so...exactly the opposite?

For me (either an "old" fan) TFA bring back that "old school" SW feeling...I really love it! (seen 8 times jajaja)

Regarding to R1 I'm very enthusiastic about it, hoping we'll see at last the powerful, unstoppable Vader we expected in the PT (not an AOTC jumping Yoda like Vader please!!!!) Also we'll finally see the legendary bothan spies in action?

From the little we're hearing about the movie its hard to tell because it seems like this is going to look very different than the saga films, and is just set in the Star Wars universe. Fans of the PT, OT and ST might all hate it or love it, who knows.

Since I was 18 months old when original Star Wars premiered and grew up with the OT, I can count myself among 'older' fans. I am adding my voice among those who thoroughly enjoyed TFA, despite being 'new' Star Wars.

I might be among those fans who are really looking forward to seeing any new Star Wars film. I was completely reassured by The Force Awakens, so I have faith that they know what they are doing. I am looking forward something new, something that we haven't seen before: a self-contained story about a specific event, with new characters portraying a side of Wars - the ground war - we haven't seen before.

If anything, I think Rogue One might be a challenge for some people, for so called 'purists', whose age is really all over the board, who see any change in GFFA as bad - if it didn't happen before in some way, shape or form, it is 'not Star Wars'. A true war film with no Jedi and Vader as the only Force user? Might be a problem for some. Search your feelings, you know it's true. We already have predictions (based on 10-seconds footage) that Episode VIII will begin where TFA ended and the cries "It's not Star Wars! It never happened before! There has to be a time jump! What would the crawl say!". Aside the fact that this is only a speculation (because Star Wars never fooled us before, right?), the fact remains that this is new Star Wars. If they want to continue with it, it has to change or it would stagnate.

In my opinion, any opportunity to expand the Galaxy Far, Far Away is good. The 'old' aesthetics - the tech, ships, armor, uniforms - will be fun to see, but the story will be new and that is exciting for me. If it's done well, I'll love it. If not... well, there is always a new film to look forward to. :)

    Wrong Death Star. :D

I'm almost the same age as @LadyMusashi. I have seen TFA maybe six or seven times, and despite some minor plot quirks, I love it. There are only two SW films I don't like that much because they were lazily made, but I still keep them around. It's hard to make me hate SW.

I'm excited for Rogue One because it's not going to be like anything we've seen before. It'll likely get to me in those deep down recesses of my mind that make me feel like a kid the way TFA did, but it will also kind of be the fans prequel. The sort of thing we thought we'd get in the PT.

I cannot wait to meet more new characters. As weird as it is to say this, TFA made me so thirsty for new blood in the GFFA it has made the other SW films harder to watch because every time I start one up, it makes me want to know what else is going on with the other characters; I will always love the original characters but now they've whet my appetite for more stories outside of that circle.

When does "older" start for you?
I saw ANH on Video when I was about 6 and one of the first "long" books I read was "Die Rückkehr der Jedi Ritter" and Luke Skywalker was my first big hero.
But I was fine with the whole Star Wars franchise since my first steps in this galaxy, even the PT are no desaster IMO.
I love to have something long living, a really nice contrast to our "panic" zeitgeist.
It was a pleasure to introduce my younger brother (PTs) and now my son (3 times tfa together).
Looking forward to the SW films that will follow (R1, VIII, Han Solo ..) with the good feeling that there will be some cineastic highlights and great fun (not forget speculating and guessing around).
Therefore I am pretty sure that I will have as much fun watching R1 as I had with TFA
Even though I have to practice patience til april because
I am a bit TIRED of waiting for blue ray, because I have not seen tfa in english o-tone so far, only the german synchro..

i was reading another German speaker's assessment of the translation. she said it was bad (for her). she particularly criticized the bridge scene for being overblown (melodramatic) compared to the English version. she also said it didn't help that the voice actor they chose for Kylo Ren was just not a good choice. i thought that was interesting.

Yes, had the same impression. Drivers voice is deeper and works much better for a villian. The "torn apart" line on the bridge from kylo will work better in o- tone. I had two other synchro- troubles: Hux and on top of the list Phasma (the only figure I get not "attached" to at all :)).
My favorite "german" voice was Finn's by the way. I love the humor of the new "große Nummer" of the resistence.

I was 4 years old when my dad took me to see ROTJ in 1983 and I had seen both ANH and TESB on VCR before that so I grew up with the Original Trilogy.

I loved TFA and I'm really looking forward to seeing Rogue One, anything that expands the story of the OT.

I'm an old OT fan, and no, I don't imagine it will. I'm interested in classical Star Wars movies not in war movies. Rogue One might suprise me, but the story concept as it stands now does not impress me at all. I think making more "prequel" like content is foolish.

oh that's interesting that you had the same feeling!

i was curious about what you thought of Hux in German ~ whether he comes off as an offensive stereotype.
i haven't heard any of it in any other language besides English, though after reading the woman's review, i started wondering about it.
i used to work in Japanese ADR, so this is really interesting to me.
would also like to hear it in Spanish, since that is native to my ears.

I think this film could end up really pleasing the OT crowd who grew up with, or it might end up alienating some. The thing to remember about TFA is that it really felt like the Star Wars that we know from the OT. This film however, despite being set in the same time period, will definitely feel different from what we've seen before. I think it will feel different in a good way and am really excited about it, but others may end up being turned off by it. The biggest factor in all of this will be how well the movie is made, if its well made than it will bring in even a lot of naysayers, but if its poorly made or middling at best, it will gain more detractors.

Rogue One definitely appeals to the nostalgic part of me more than TFA. Rogue One is about the events described in the very first moments of the film that is today known as ANH and the Death Star is a classic component of Star Wars.

I want to believe that it appeals more to general History fans as it's meant to be similar to Saving Private Ryan so it would be more of a question of asking if they like certain gendered over certain movies .

I don't think older fans would love one movie more than the other, if it's all star wars it's equal IMO, agreed I can't wait to see how the story plays out & how the plans were stolen.

I will, but only if I see Imperial sideburns and white mushroom helmet Rebel troopers and glorious Imperial fleet shots with plenty of TIE's roaring around to the Imperial March theme.
