I think an interesting way to have a happy, yet bittersweet ending/complete story arch, movie, would be for maybe a few heroes or one hero to die on screen, BUT all the heroes then go to debrief on Alderaan, or maybe they are simply stationed there at the end. The movie somehow lets us know full well that they will be on Alderaan for the big "kaboom", death star test. For the first time ever, we will care about Alderaan. It tie's up the loose ends question, "why haven't we seen these heroes in 4-6?" Maybe at the end we get a message from Leia for the remaining heroes to go debrief on Alderaan. They board a ship in a pretty sunset landing area, and true fans know they are headed to their demise. What do you think? Likely?

Late Addition: Maybe they could only get them to Leia's ship, not thinking they would survive, and the plans were somehow physically destroyed. They were hoping she was or would soon be on Alderaan. But of course they beat her there because she gets captured.

If they survived all of THAT then I doubt they'd die on alderaan...i have a feeling i will be eating all of my own words when I see R1, though.

This is such an awesome theory, and so ironically sad. They survive Vader and Death troopers, and all smiles "Hey bro, party on Alderaan. See you there! I think I will tell Jyn my true feelings!" Nothing can stop us now!

I think this is brilliant. Not that I want everyone to die, but, as you said, it would really make the Death Star's first successful destruction way more impactful.

I really don't think every single member has to die for the story to be complete as the RO heros could simply go help the Rebelion in many other systems and that would explain their absence in the OT. Just look at the tale of the second Death Star. Mon Mothma said that ''many'' Bothans died to bring the Rebels the info on the second Death Star. Even if many died, there were some surviving Bothan heroes who were the ones who bought the information to the Rebels. These survivors were never seen in ROTJ as there wasn't a single Bothan in the movie. What did those Bothan heros do after the events of their mission? Why weren't they there in the decisive battle on Endor? We do not know yet we know that some must have survived and were elsewhere during the Endor events and this could be the same with the surviving members of the RO team.

Interesting idea. Maybe Bail tells them to hide out on his planet until things blow over. Maybe as a sort of witness protection or something? Unfortunately, Leia gets captures and the Empire just happens to test it's planet-destroying weapon on Alderaan :(

Or they'll be detained on the Death Star, in cells 2188 through 2192. We'll never look at Luke the same way again!

In all seriousness, I don't think the Alderaan idea really works because the Death Star plans were supposed to go to there. If the crew of Rogue One makes it to Alderaan before its destruction, why wouldn't they have just taken the data tapes with them instead of beaming the transmissions to Leia's ship?

It's an intriguing solution, but I agree with @C3-Steve-O.

I've been saying since the end of the second episode in season 1 of Rebels that it's likely the Rebels crew end up on Alderaan, perhaps anticipating the delivery of the stolen plans. That never happens as Leia's ship never arrives, and it wraps up the fate of two lingering Jedi characters.

If they die during the mission or 2 weeks later on Alderaan, what does that change ?

I think that would be too much of a downbeat ending. I'd rather see them go out in a blaze of glory, achieving something.

Let's see uhhhhhh. I just found out the GE haves an Uber weapon that kills planets. I'll be spending as much time in space as I can until it's destroyed.

Maybe some of them. But I'dlike to think they mostly hid among others in the Galaxy listening to stories about what they did

I have a strong (or is it bad) feeling that most of the Rogue One crew isn't going to make it out of the film alive. It's a war film, after all. Having said that, I don't think it breaks the OT continuity if some of the RO heroes make it out alive and are never mentioned in the OT. There were lots and lots of heroes in WWII that were never mentioned as heroes or recognized until well after the war. And they also didn't show up in every major battle of the war. It's a big galaxy out there. :)

I was thinking perhaps this group of rebels could join up with the Bothans, which would allow them to have even more of a heroic future and add a bittersweet coda to their adventure when they are again mentioned in ROTJ.
