Will Rey get her butt kicked in this movie.

Yes, she is now overconfident after beating Kylo when he was emotionally drained by killing his father, physically wounded by Chewie's revengecast, and physically drained by the fight with Finn. Not to mention the curious sense that Ren never really wanted to beat her, and had history with her going back past the events of the film ("what girl?!?") I think she is going to have a serious humbling soon. Hopefully it will not be too similar to Episode II and V (no hand losing, please), but if it does not happen the narrative will lose all its tension, why should we care about anything that happens to her in IX if she has already been dominant for the first 2 films?

That being said, if Luke doesn't give out some serious ass-handing of his own, I am going to be extremely disappointed. Luke ought to be the most powerful Jedi we've ever seen by now, having Anakin's lineage/power, but having gone much deeper into maturity without having the whole "diced up and turned into a cyborg" thing happen to him.

 

Rian Johnson is a smart man, so the only way she can Sue her way through this movie is if KK or JJ intervene.

 

I think it will be more of a outsmart her kind of thing. She is powerful, but I think something will happen where she is completely helpless to help. She will feel useless and have to watch something horrible happen again (RIP Solo)

 

Or through a lawyer .

I don' t think so. Kasdan said Episode VIII will be "weird" I'm just kidding. She will get her ass handed to her on a plate.

 

I think people expecting X for this film are going to be disappointed. She might get knocked down a peg in a fight but there could be other ways to giver Rey real struggle other than losing a rematch with Kylo. She could become arrogant and turn to the dark side. she could lose a close friend. She could become possessed or lose her force powers due to some relic or device and become non-FS. Who knows?

 

I hope she does it will build some character

 

One more thing:

If she doesn't get her ass kicked, more than once, I will have a hard time believing in her character. she will just seemed like a typical forced "badass" female. IMO-A true sign off toughness is how well you take a beat down, or face inevitable loss...but still don't shy from a fight.

That Kylo fight scene was strange. More so in the sense that had they saved that for VIII, after she has had some training and worked hard for her powers, it would've been far more emotionally satisfying.

The only reasoning I can come up with is:

Kylo was injured, emotional and most importantly very arrogant about his abilities.
On top of this, Rey skirted close to the Dark Side.
This perhaps enabled her to beat Kylo.
It's still an issue for me but that's the best reasoning I can see.

Going by this, I think Kylo will/could beat her in the next movie.
By then he will have finished his training, not be injured, be a bit less emotional and will not underestimate her again.

 

Luke will throw her in the ocean at the start of ep VIII yelling I'm Snoke b*tch, you felt right inside my trap.

 

I feel the same way. Even so, it was a stretch. Lol

I don't know what a Mary Sue is, but agree w/ your assessment.

 

Story purpose, I think Kylo should come back stronger in the darkside and beat her down. Not because I don't like Rey, I love her!! It'll set up Episode 9 for her to come full circle and beat him for good or turn him to the lightside.

He didn't want to kill or even seriously injure her. Because Snoke had given him specific orders to bring her to him, alive. Plus Kylo himself seems intrigued by her.

As for the question, yes I can easily see it happening:

-Rey might be overconfident because she has overpowered Kylo in the past, BEFORE whatever training Luke has given her.
-She might be the one who's angry/emotionally conflicted this time, if certain potentially painful details about her past end up coming to light.
-She might find that Kylo also has been trained more, and is now much more focused, intense, and coldly ruthless, which she might not expect. Also, he'd be fighting at full-strength/health this time around.

So yes, I can see her having her Luke/Vader in ESB, Anakin/Dooku in AOTC, moment.

I could also see it being a more psychological/emotional defeat. Like she is unable to stop something really bad from happening. Sort of like she was unable to stop her potential surrogate father-figure Han from dying, or her first real friend Finn from getting beaten into a coma (yeah, real Mary Sue here people, ugh). Perhaps Luke surrenders/is captured by Snoke, despite her attempts to intervene. Or something happens to Finn and/or Leia, etc.

 

This trilogy is as much about the development of the villain (Kylo Ren) as it is the heroine (Rey). I believe she will be defeated, probably apprehended, and used as bait to draw out Luke Skywalker.

 

I hope not.
