Now, up front, I know he has that supposed 'trilogy' in the works. But I give that like a 50-50 chance of making it to one film, and probably less than 20% that all three films will get made with him steering the ship. His best hope being that he gets it started, and they wise up and swap in real talent to finish it, so that he gets credit for it, without messing it up.

One thing that is for certain, whether Disney wants to plow more money into him or not, is that the man is damaged goods. I'm relatively sure they know this, which is why they've hedged their bets with a second trilogy by GoT guys. When Abrams has to be brought in to 'save' 9, something went horribly wrong. When your flagship gets outgrossed by a standalone Marvel Move, just reach for the YIKES.

I just don't see his future movies doing well at all. I know I won't watch them. He's basically the Uwe Boll of Star Wars. As a result of TLJ, I'm honestly not even sold on Solo at this point, but I do like Ron Howard so I may see that one once... cause its Ron.

So.. what do you think... will it recover and this is just a bump in his road, or has he shot his career but good?

According to what his boss Kathleen and other co-workers (actors and other directors) have said about working with him, besides taking into account what the critics of his movie and the box office said, Rian has no problem in his career, it's more I think he has a bright future. It's okay that you did not like the movie Scum, but to say that the director failed miserably and that he will not be able to regain his career, is over-exaggerated to say the least

First of all this man is called Rian JOHNSON.

Rian was apparently the first director Disney looked at for directing a Star Wars movie back in 2012. They wanted him and they seem to be very happy with him. So his career as a Star Wars director isn't in danger. His overall career isn't too. All of Rian's movies are known to be unusual but orignal.

I may not be the biggest fan of TLJ, but I really respect Rian for his fortitude. He's standing up for his work and so is Disney. So no, this man will have a long career.

Considering that he has a good head on his shoulder, massive success behind him (and several considerable ones before), good support system in both his collaborators and a massive studio behind him and reputation of great collaborator and hard worker, Johnson will be (more than) just fine.

Consider Josh Trank situation - he made critically panned film (which almost all of the fans hated) and his erratic and unprofessional behavior lost him a Star Wars film. That is someone whose career needs not just recovering but a CPR. And yet, he is currently preparing the film Tom Hardy, Matt Dillon and half a dozen other famous actors. Johnson will be (more than) just fine.

    Sorry.. Rain Johnson then.

    We'll see.

Wow... of all the images you could have used... you pick the one with the kid whose career as a Jedi failed miserably while burning down the Republic. Sure hope Rain doesn't do for Disney what Anakin did for the Old Republic!

I want to know how a man like Rian Johnson, with a CV/resumé of only 3 full-length feature films under his belt, can be chosen and allowed to write and direct a film in the biggest movie saga franchise on Earth. Makes no sense.

Quality rather than quantity. Brick and Looper are pretty great and two of his three Breaking Bad episodes are considered to be the best ones in the whole series.

His directing is out of this world. Seeing his name as the sole screenwriter would make me a little nervous from here on out.

    That isnt that uncommon.
"Buffys" Joss Whedon for example did only direct one movie before he was hired to write and direct The Avengers.

Marvels "Russo brothers" (Avengers 3 & 4 directors) also directed only 1 feature film and were mostly tv directors before Kevin Feige hired them to direct Cap 2, which is in a lot of ways one of the better MCU flicks.

Or Star Wars own Richard Marquand, who was also just a TV director, before George Lucas hired him to direct Episode VI, well technically George directed this movie over his shoulders but still....you know what I mean. xD

edited : Colin Trevorrow is another good example.

-TLJ: Biggest commercial success of 2017 with 1.3 billion

-Mostly positive reviews from professional critics

-Is writing/directing the first movie of a new Star Wars trilogy

How Rian's carrer can recover from this ?

Because Kathleen Kennedy liked his past movies.

At least to me RJ delivered an amazing movie, a master piece to me. The critics loved the movie. Some fans dont.

About his future as a director I dont have any idea. Something that I notice with SW directors is that they are ok, mediocre, they will never be a Kubrick or a Kurosawa for example.
Richard Marquand, Irvin Kershner, George Lucas, JJ and maybe RJ never directed great movies, except the SW's.
So, in the case of RJ I think its very hard that he can direct a movie so good like TLJ.

I don't really care one bit about his "career," I just care about how much he gets to further damage the Star Wars brand. I agree 100% with your first paragraph. It's 50/50 he makes it to one film, forget about a whole trilogy. Oh sure, they'll throw him a bone and give him an "Executive Producer" credit or something like that, but doubt he would steerhead 3 movies.

He will write and direct the first one and co-write, produce the other two, which are also based on his story.

So basically what Lucas did with the OT, well maybe a lil bit less since Georgie had full control over ESB and Jedi.

Your right. He created a billion dollar movie, that you don't like.

So Rian's career must be in the toilet.
