If they did a crawl, I agree about the "fake" crawl shown at SW Celebration. That was clever.

A crawl would benefit the film, in my opinion. I think for this first "Story" film should establish where it falls in the timeline of the PT/OT to those who may be confused. Something simple, stylistically different. It would just seem odd to not start a Star Wars movie without the main theme and a crawl. Hell, it was a little jarring not having the 20th Century Fox fanfare at the beginning of TFA. I couldn't imagine not having that opening crawl. It'd be weird.

Agree. Actually, all the comics have some kind of crawl in the first page so, why a spin-off movie wouldn't?

Apologies if similar thoughts have been stated earlier in this thread (it's a long thread!)...

I'm of the opinion it shouldn't have a traditional crawl for a few reasons, one being the obvious: to differentiate it from the saga films. But also because this is our first SW film (Clone Wars notwithstanding) that won't have a John Williams score. It'd be jarring to start the moving with his traditional crawl music only to switch to Michael Giacchino afterward, so I'm guessing Giacchino will do all of the score. With that being the case, it'd be super weird to see the opening crawl with different music.

All that being said, I think an opening text of some sort would help those that are still (somehow) confused about this not being Episode 8 or starring Rey (yes, these people exist), and text would also link these anthology films - at least in spirit - to the existing saga.

So...how should it start? I'd suggest the traditional "A Long Time Ago..." in blue text, perhaps followed by yellow text in Aurebesh that letter by letter transforms into a "normal" vertically scrolling English text (not forced perspective like the crawls).....and maybe it could start by saying "From The Journal Of The Whills" --- some of us lifelong fans would get a kick out of that, but it may confuse newbies.

I don't know. I just hope they come up with something wildly imaginative --- anything less than iconic will be a letdown.

I agree, it should be something different. Clone Wars had its own spin on the crawl with the newscaster, and I think it should be the same for the spin-offs. Maybe some static text setting up the story, but no crawl with the theme music.

These movies are meant to have room to be their own things and have their own tones.

well TCW had a narration, which works much better in a tv environment than a movie environment...R1 is so much bigger for us and Disney/LFL but I'd love for it to be similar to the Celebration reveal

first and foremost the crawl is a tool for setting the story.

if the story needs to be set (and i believe it's possibly needed more than ever here) then i reckon there will be a crawl.

agree.. that was so original. i almost wished they'd not done that and saved it for the actual crawl in december.

yep I agree and still a lot of people cannot set this movie into the correct timeline, so a crawl is really needed. ;)

The celebration intro was cool, but it would feel out of place in the actual movie.

I don't want R1 to open with a crawl, because they'd have to replace the Star Wars logo with "Rogue One" and the episode title with "A Star Wars Story". I doubt that would work and want them to try something different.
In fact, I hope the movie doesn't even open in space.
IMO, the first shot of the new trailer would be a great way to start things off. The following scene would then show Krennic visiting Galen Erso, whom he'd take with him in his shuttle. We'd see the ship leaving the atmosphere and the Rogue One logo would appear in front of a backdrop of stars.

That does sound cool but that would be typical of a normal sci-fi/action movie...but this is STAR WARS AND not opening with at least "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far awy" in the blue font would not make it a fully-fledged star wars movie in the eyes of the fans...maybe start in space, have the title zoom out with the score and have a ship fly by and the shot follows it over into the planet's atmosphere which then cuts to the opening shot of the trailer.

I can't imagine a Star Wars movie without an opening crawl.
