Luke also knew by the end of TLJ that the Jedi could not end and there would be an eternal struggle between light and dark. He showed up at the end to spark hope throughout the galaxy and give them time to escape. When people hear a Skywalker is coming, they know it means hope....
The key was eliminating the hubris that the Jedi operated with. A less rigid society of light side users that doesn't act like an incubation chamber for dark siders....

I mean it would fit George's poetic nature.

I remember this post. I actually believe your close. Not sure if EVERY force user will be called a Skywalker but everything about the movie title suggests IMO that is where this is going. I do not believe this is a reference to Ben Solo outside of it referring to how his entire ancestry has influenced the evolution of Force users.

The more I think about this, I think Luke never died. They never said that he did.

This notion really doesn't make sense in the context of the Episodic films being the "Skywalker Saga" and The Rise of Skywalker being the conclusion to a 9-hour story.

It makes far more sense that Rey is both a Skywalker and a "nobody from nowhere". How is this possible, you ask? Through Shmi Skywalker.

The Skywalker name is paternal, and we know absolutely nothing about Shmi's backstory before we meet her in The Phantom Menace; the only thing we know is that Gardulla the Hutt brought her and Anakin to Tatooine from somewhere else.

Revealing Rey as being a Skywalker through a sibling of Shmi's would directly cement and validate her presence at the center of the Saga and bring the narrative "full circle" without invalidating anything that was set up in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

It would be terrible if the Jedi were replaced by Skywalkers.

Renaming the Jedi is quite possibly the worse marketing idea for Star Wars. So you might be onto something.

Not to be "that guy", but the title of Episode IX is "The Rise of Skywalker" , so your 'R' theory isn't correct.

@RoyleRancor Exactly! It was their fear of the Darkside, that became their undoing.

More than you know, perhaps... In one of GL's first drafts for STAR WARS (No episodes yet, no "new hope".)
Luke's last name was Starlighter! (yep, later reused for Biggs!) and the Jedi were called "Sky Walkers"!
So indeed you might be on to something after all! ;)

I wouldn't mind this being the case. I may be one of the few fans that enjoyed the idea of Rey being a "nobody" instead of a Skywalker. I think that perhaps Skywalker could become some sort of title, like Master. It's clear that Rey has extremely powerful in the Force, maybe this is something that happens when a greater threat rises to bring unbalance to the force? I'd almost like to see Anakin and Luke bestow the title of Skywalker onto Rey. Then years in the future perhaps another promising young Jedi begins to show great aptitude for the force, then receives the title "Skywalker" from Rey.
Though to be honest, if the Emperor has been pulling the strings this entire time, or is at least somehow still attached to the Death Star, I think that Anakin would need to be involved more heavily, if only to stay true to the established canon of him being the Chosen One and balancing the force. I'm just excited to have a Star Wars movie that has already brought back that "Star Wars" feeling as I watched the teaser and Ian step out on that stage!

It would be a slap in the face to Yoda and Obi Wan and all the others that died before protecting peace in the galaxy by rebranding the Jedi as Skywalkers.

With all the speculation about Hayden Christensen, I would say this has something to do with Anakin's physical return (and/or maybe Luke). I would have to assume that fairly early on in the movie we would have some sort of encounter between Kylo and Palpatine (perhaps Kylo finds a way to 'raise' Palpatine). At this point you would probably see the return of some very concerned Jedi force ghosts to guide Rey. Maybe she has to find the artifact or source that was used to raise Palpatine, because it could be used to resurect all the Sith lords.

So as the movie builds towards its climax, Rey is struck down by Palpatine and Kylo realizes the error in his ways (Ben is redeemed!). In a mirror to Return of the Jedi, Ben tries to defeat Palpatine (aka Vader throwing the Emporer down the shaft). However, Palpatine is ready this time and Ben is struck down. All hope seems lost (they could probably twist the scenes in with the Resistance losing a battle). Palpatine starts to talk aloud about his plans for the Galaxy and how there was no one left who could defeat him. At that point, the defeated Ben realizes there is only one person who can defeat Palpatine once and for all, the one who was prophesied - Anakin. Ben uses whatever he did to resurrect Palpatine to resurrect Anakin "the Rise of Skywalker". An epic battle ensues, the ultimate battle of Good versus Evil. In one last twist, Anakin is on the edge of defeat. Rey appears and then Yoda...and then Luke (each one being resurrected by Ben)...Palpatine is finally defeated, the last blow coming from Anakin, ultimately fulfilling the prophecy. I'm not sure what they can do to close the door (since no one ever seems to die), but my guess is they will find some way to imply that the Sith have been defeated once and for all. Poe and Finn along with Lando and Chewie lead the ultimate battle against the First Order, Hux is killed, and the Resistance is victorious.

Epic victory party ensues....Ewoks invited...Leia force ghost for the win.

    Hmm,

I like the idea that the name Skywalker is started by Rey to signify the reformed Jedi, but I don't know that the title really does that.

Like, replace Jedi for it: "The Rise of Jedi".

"The Rise of the Jedi" would sound a whole lot better. I guess not all collective singular nouns follow this path (for instance, "The Rise of Humanity") and I'm not really sure what the rule is here, but "The Rise of Skywalker" just seems like it wouldn't work in this case.

Isn't there something like 'he's rising' in the Bible ?

I think it will be the same for Luke. His ascent to the pantheon of the Force but through the other side.

BTW, it would have been a perfect ep IX title story for my old theory of inside out :D
