SPECULATION Will "Skywalker" surname die with Luke?

It seems that, when Luke dies, Kylo will be the last Skywalker (a Solo-Skywalker), unless Rey turns out to be one or she and Kylo Ben () hook up and get married, as well as have a kid or, maybe, two (just in case the first one goes bad).

 

I've been thinking this as well. The thing is Star Wars seems to be very "traditional" in some aspects. So the question is whether the story group will "break" tradition and potentially have Rey keep her Skywalker name, if she is one, or will the Skywalkers just continue as Solos from now on?

 

The quotes from the President of LFL help with that:

“The Saga films focus on the Skywalker family saga. The stories follow a linear narrative that connects to the previous six films. The Force Awakens follows Return of the Jedi and continues that generational story. The Anthology films offer opportunities to explore fresh characters, new storylines and a variety of genres inside the Star Wars universe.” (October 2015) "Well the Saga films are primarily the soap opera centered around the Skywalker family." (December 2015)

So, if you take Kathleen Kennedy at her word - then either: the "Saga" films end at 9, or there will be further Skywalkers.

Whatever that is defined as (Kylo is a Solo/Skywalker, Rey becomes an "adopted" Skywalker, etc...) but it seems the intent is for the main films to be around the Skywalker family.

 

If it dies with him I couldn't think of a better character to end the family legacy.

 

Well, if we take the above Kennedy quote as face value, then if Kylo does not continue the Skywalker lineage, then Rey will need to be a Skywalker.

Or at least that's my take, anyway!

 

If Disney wants to really make it a long term franchise, yes, it's unavoidable.

 

Maybe there is another Skywalker we've never heard about... It may be unlikely but hey, you never know how the story will play out.

 

They could bring the lineage back in Ep XV with Kylo having kids.

 

Honestly, with as much as we know about him, couldn't Finn be a Skywalker?

 

A total lookalike of his dad or mum.

 

Ha, right, but that's just it - we know nothing about his mom! It at least strikes me as a narrow possibility, albeit a very far-fetched one.

Maybe Finn is taken to corsuscant to be officially adopted by Luke in the end of IX .

Does it really matter if the Skywalker name will die with Luke?

My opinion of this new trilogy is already low. No need to sink it to new depths with a Rey/Ben hookup.

 

I actually make this argument a lot. The big problem is that Luke is white and Finn is black. I mean this is easily remedied with making the mom black as well. But No matter how you slice it some argue that Finn is too black to even have any of blood relation to Luke's pale face. Although Mark Hamill make a tweet about how Finn might possibly be his son

 

I dunno who or what is gonna keep it alive but to answer if the surname dies with Luke, there is no way. But don't ask me who keeps it going, my opinion changes every week.
