SPECULATION Will the Force Awakens be darker than either Empire or Sith?

I reckon it'll be darker than ANH, but not as dark as ESB or ROTS.

 

I kind of hope not, to be perfectly honest. I feel like Hollywood has recently fallen under the impression that "darker" = "better." While that certainly works for some stories, it really has no place in Star Wars. It should be emotionally realistic, but it shouldn't be depressing.

 

I don't think TFA will have anything as dark as an entire organization, children included, being killed.

 

Not saying it's true but according to the most prominent rumors that is exactly what is going to happen plus Han.

 

The poll is silly. It goes no option for "no it won't be dark at all".

Aside from rumoured deaths, I don't think it will be that dark. I think that will come one or both of the next two.

It's my educated guess that TFA will be dark with adult/drama themes but not violent or gore or too heavy.
The Mouse House wants the 4Q $$$ so the plot & themes won't be too extreme.
I'd say it will be a mix of A New Hope & TESB.
I've seen & read it's PG-13 so JJ & ILM are taking a few chances. I think this comes from the effort to portray the bad guys as VERY bad(torture, decapitations, violence, etc).

Will it work?
Maybe. TFA is already on track to earn billions in a few months but the quality or value will be hotly debated.

 

I assume you're referring to the rumored flashback(s) of Luke's academy being slaughtered? I'd forgotten about that.

 

As long as it's not as dark as Aliens vs Predator I'll be ok

 

TFA will be ANH 2.0 that borrows parts from the dark tone of ESB.

 

I never really considered ROTS that dark because the SFX were so cartoonish.
And there wasn't a single drop of blood spilled in that entire movie.

TESB on the other, that had some realistic gore, Luke getting mauled by the Wampa then loppping of his arm.
Seeing Vader for the first time underneath his helmet, and then him beating the crap out of Luke on Bespin and chopping off his hand.

These along with a lot of other great scenes for me makes TESB the darkest of all the Star Wars films.

But as someone pointed out, dark doesn't necessarily translate into great. There a lot of things that have to all come together to make it work.

In the case of TESB, a darker tone was just one component that made that film arguably the best Star Wars movie of them all.

 

TESB its a dark movie for adults and people with a good taste. ROTS tries to be a dark movie but unfortunately has stupids dialogues, bad acting and the especial effetcs looks like a video game (space battle of Coruscant), add thst to the flashy duel lightsabers. Dark movie just dont mean that only the photography must have a lot of shades and a grey tone, but the emotiional context has to be a little depressive and introspective. Ed Wood and Elephant Man are good examples of a dark movie.

 

It will be as dark as Luke finding Beru and Owen, Alderran and Ben Kenobi's death.

I don't think it would be a good idea to lead with a particularly dark movie, I'd imagine it's about as dark as ANH. It can't be as dark as RotS because, you know, infanticide.
