He had a story to tell.. and he told it.

i'm not sure i'd call him a genius.. mainly because i think he'd give one of his infamous glares if someone called him that to his face lol. I'd go with part-visionary and part magician for accomplishing a feat that did not seem technically possible at the time, and somehow hasn't aged like other sci-fi / fantasy movies. he certainly set the bar high from 1977 on-wards.

    he's a wonderful story teller.

JJ has very recently alluded to being 'braver' with his direction/production of the final saga movie, and i think he even mentioned RJ's brave approach to TLJ in there somewhere.

I don't think for one moment that TROS won't have a few elements that we'll look at and say how similar they are to previous movies.. but i do think that we'll be challenged as viewers.

there will likely be space battles, there will likely be ground-based troop battles, there will likely be force / light saber battles. very likely we won't see any (active) super weapons.

tell us how this saga ends JJ.. finish the story !
    :)

I think Lucas is just an old school storyteller from that generation, and I sort of miss that type of narrative today. If you look at Lucas, Cameron, Coppola, etc, they were all writing their sequels with an arc/theme to them. T1 and T2 have an arc/theme, the PT/OT have an arc/theme, Godfather Trilogy has an arc/theme, and my belief is because they started before the era of CGI. They HAD to tell a story, because they couldn't rely on big set action pieces and CGI to entertain a segment of moviegoers that see blockbusters today. Of course they all had their misses as the PT isn't as good as the OT, Godfather 3 isn't as good as GF1 and GF2, but there is a story in all of those movies that make them hold up years later. I will continue to say that Jurassic Park (which I love) essentially killed the blockbuster because it was the first movie to utilize CGI in a way that it made it possible for anything in movies. On paper, that sounds great because it meant the movies could go anywhere now. But of course a whole generation of directors abused CGI and put the story and characters second.

This will be ROTJ 2.0. TFA was ANH 2.0.

The only difference is that nobody will be in "that particular garment".

Also this is the 6th SW film with a DS. In plans, finished, under construction or remains.

TFA wasn't ANH 2.0. These movies are quite different IMO, at least regarding to characters and feel.

Who cares. As long as it is fun. Star Wars never really original. JJ should focus on the fun.

JJ Abrams speaking to Vanity Fair: "It felt slightly more renegade; it felt slightly more like, you know, f*** it. I'm going to do the thing that feels right because it does, not because it adheres to something".

While there were similarities in TFA to ANH that gave the movie a nostalgic feel. I never felt the plot was anywhere near each other. I would say I expect the same from this movie, similarities to other SW films because it's Star Wars, and plot twist that is very SW like that makes Rise of the Skywalker it's own. Just my opinion.

I think one of the ways the fans are kept off track in guessing entire plots is to create characters and situations that do not carry over from the previous movie. There's therefore no bread crumb trail to follow. What little we know about TRoS right now we are gleaning from the title, photo stills, the teaser, and speculation. The story is likely to be something completely different than speculation and so (my guess) is that most of the parallels we draw from it and RoTJ will be largely coincidental.

I just don't see it this way. If we consider how JJ views film making and storytelling, which he unveiled pretty exhaustively in his Ted Talk of 2008, In the course of the story the writer somewhat "hides" what he refers to as "the investment of character", which is precisely what is inside "the mystery box" (A concept that btw so many people, OMG, mistake and misrepresent constantly). One could be cynical and say that both TFA and TLJ have too many similar story beats to ANH and ESB, that some characters follow similar arcs, but I'm afraid this one person would just be missing out what's really the point of these ST films: being invested in Kylo and Rey, as people, and in their specific journey, which seems to unavoidably bring them together. This is what's inside JJ's "box". Some call it Reylo :)

So no. For reasons explained above, TROS cannot and will not be ROTJ 2.0 ( using that hideous neologism for lack of a better word...)
