First of all.. I didn't have an issue with TFA retreading ANH. We needed to go back over old ground to remind people what Star Wars is.

But.. i'm seeing a few indications that it'll be very derivative of the other movies, and even derivative of ESB (as many of us have feared)

Firstly there's the info (from MakingStarWars) that Rey encounters a vision of Kylo while meditating with the force. That's a complete retread of the Vader cave scene.

Benecio Del Toro also (according to MSW) plays a smuggler type villain character. Boba Fett anyone?

I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

It looks like there's nothing new going on so far.. plot-wise or visually. Nothing we haven't already seen in previous movies.

Only 2 of those are from ESB.

Lucas made a 6 part saga laid out in a ring narratively with elements to tonal rhyming. If you are going to continue telling stories in that same saga shouldn't that be an element of the new films.

Apprently the name of that desert world is "Crete", It has been described as "Mars with snow".

(BTW. "Crete" is a totally stupid name because theres already a very well known real Crete. It's Greece's largest island and a very popular tourist destination)

So yeah. another AT-AT walker battle on a snow planet against some low level flying opposition who appear to be dragging tow cables. Never seen that before have we?! *sigh*

Rey encounters a vision of Kylo while meditating.

Luke went into a literal cave and met Vader which ended up being himself.

    Not the same...

MSW never stated Benico was playing a smuggler.

I blame the editing for how poor TFA looked.. J.J. really saturated things to make the practical and CG elements blend together, and really crushed the black colours. It looks like 720p no matter what screen you watch it on.

But yeah i'm surprised more people haven't picked up on the Finn/Luke thing, they'll both come out of their injured states in the first act and go off on their own adventure.. while the others are elsewhere.

AT-AT battle.. dark side vision, training on a desolate planet with an unstable jedi master.. etc etc. Oh and Finn will be going to some kind of casino planet and mixing with scoundrel types (ahem, Lando/Cloud City comes to mind) it also looks like that city is ripping off the look of Naboo.

What's wrong with just making it Naboo? Why bring in new planets which are identical to other planets? (Starkiller base planet/Hoth, Maz Kanata's forest planet/Endor, Jakku/Tatooine)

At least come up with something new... Lucas at least tried out new ideas with the prequels.

All these people praising Rian for what a "great writer" he is, when practically everything i've seen from TLJ is retreading something in some way.The only new thing i've seen is the "force tree" which is like something out of a cartoon! Ugh.

J.J. was so obsessed with making TFA the most action packed Star Wars ever, that he set Rian up to make a super boring sequel.

Force trees are actually already OT stuff. it was an unused concept for the vader cave in ESB. The John Williams music for that scene is even called 'Magic Tree' or something.

Also the first shot of Rey breathing heavy, there is clearly a cave in the background ,probably where she fights Kylo and sees her own face under the helmet.
I am confident this film will be amazing, but it does look damn simmilar to ESB from the trailer.

It looks nothing like or sounds similar to ESB at all.

And another post about "TLJ looks too similar to TESB / other SW movies". This has to stop, it's getting annoying. After all the leaks I've read and after watching the teaser, I think TLJ is nothing like TESB.

I don't get tired to emphasize it: Rian Johnson is the director and writer of this movie. He is known to be one of the most original filmmakers. Just look at his work.

People should also keep in mind the foundation of these movie: "The Hero's Journey" and "History repeats itself".

I think its spelled Krait. Sounds like crate. Not the earthly island of Crete.

Also I see no snow I think that description is flawed. They are flying over grey cracked sand. I did not get the impression there were any tow cables. The completely new ships were scraping the ground of cracked grey sand kicking up a red cloud. Nothing like ESB.

    Crait.

I think a planet name inspired by an Earth location is a nice nod to Tataouine/Tatooine.
The only weird thing about it is the fact that Crete doesn't have any salt flats...

Um...you do realize that each movie has visual callbacks to the previous movies. There was a ton of NEW in TFA, but some seem to want to pay any attention to the new.

We got new aliens, new droids, new weapons, new heroes, new villains, new planets. Did they echo? Sure. Did they build off of previous technology? Absolutely. But my gosh, let's complain because Star Wars isn't how we as fans would design or write it.

Of course there was "new" in the TLJ trailer. New ships, new locals, new planets, new characters.

I mean at some point can't we just be happy?

The new aliens and droid were pretty much background fodder

Its Crait and that's not snow.

Seriously are we going to have to endure this rehash stuff for the next 8 months?

There is absolutely nothing in this trailer that looks like ESB or any other star Wars movie for that matter. In fact to me it looks like it's going to be the most unique Star Wars story we've ever seen.

To the OP - This notion that you cant have an exploding xwing, AT-AT walkers, stormtroopers in battle, or guys with scars appear in more than one movie with out it being a rehash is such a rediculous BS I don't even know here to start.

It almost like some people are looking for things to criticize.

As where the aliens and droids in ANH and I'd argue we saw all new aliens in TFA. BB-8 was new and original and nothing like that design had been seen before. Rey's speeder was new. Kylo's lightsaber. Maz was a unique concept - she had the same type of relationship with the Force that Chirrut would have in RO.

In the PT many of the ships in AOTC and ROTS were versions of ships that look older in tech than the OT. You can see where the X-Wing and Star Destroyers came from because the PT took the designs we knew and walked the tech back a few decades.

Holy crap. The movie isn't out yet and you've already decided its going to suck. This is why we can't have nice things. Is there anything about which you wouldn't complain? Or is the perfect movie in your head?

Every movie about WWII kind of looks the same. Every movie about international spies kind of looks the same. Every movie about political intrigue kind of looks the same.

You can't judge this (not-yet released film) based on how the trailer looked. I mean the damn thing gave NO indication of plot at all outside of Luke trains Rey (which we knew) and the bad guys and good guys are still fighting (which we also knew).

Is there no way to convince you to go see the film before moaning? If not, then just don't go see it and enjoy the next Fast & Furious instead. You seem like a passionate dude and all, but there are only so many ways to make this line of films so some things are GOING to look similar.

Well, JJ Abrams said sometime ago that if he had to do The Force Awakens over again, he'd try to make it more original. The biggest criticism of that movie was for that very reason, it was essentially a retread. I think Disney and everyone involved are aware of that criticism. I'm holding out hope that Rian does keep things new and fresh this time around. I know from the outset this movie looks like a retread of previous stuff in the saga, but I think there's going to be some really big surprises in store for fans. Fingers crossed.

To create something all new from nowhere is imposible in my opinion. In the SW universe we will continue to see the references that sometimes look like a copy but it doesnt bother me at all.
SW took so many things from the original Flash Gordon too:

People will always complain if too similar or too different.

I think this episode will be different because of the following:

    - There was no real focus put on an infiltration mission (Apart from snippets in ROTJ with Lando in Jabba's palace and Rogue One).
    - I think we will go deeper in the Force mythic, as we never went before.
    - Rian Johnson might use some fan references (Like the AT-AT attack) but twist it to play with our minds.

I think Luke's last sentence in the teaser trailer sums up what we can expect from this movie: you must unlearn what you have learned.
