As we have learned from the REBELS show the existence of the Genosians is no more. And the method of this extinction would be a bit dark for the REBELS target audience , but for a 'war' film like ROGUE ONE is set to be ..maybe this can be depicted to show just how far the Emperor and the imperials are to go to rule the galaxy by fear...A whole world massacre and forced sterilisation sounds pretty dark and would install the fear factor the audience needs to once again understand why the rebellion exists.
I feel the Genosians have come to this end as they have helped build the deathstar parts and may be the empire feel they know to much seeing it above their bug world and do not want word getting out as it is not 'fully operational' yet and may have exposed weak spots..I think ROGUE ONE if anything needs to show the ruthless fear and violence that Vader and the Empire where notorious for. ..as much as I love a force choke and the OT I just don't think it depicts this to its fullest ...IMHO

Timing might be an issue. Nobody knows for sure, but I'm under the impression that Rogue One comes after Rebels.

Pretty sure this was already addressed in the Darth Vader comic. I can't remember exactly what happened, but basically it was a biological genocide. Granted, the events are only explained, not shown, but if we're going to see an atrocity perpetuated by the Empire in Rogue One, it'll likely be an original idea and not one already featured in other media. Plus, as @jmjawors said, timing would likely be an issue; Rebels is still a few years away from the setting of Rogue One, so any Geonosis genocide scenes would have to be flashbacks.

I'm pretty sure that in one of the earlier issues of the Darth Vader comic series, it's stated that Geonosis was sterilized by the empire.

Yeah, I just wen't back and glossed over issue #4 of vader and it is explained that the empire was responsible for the sterilization of Geonosis. It would definitely be an awesome tidbit to add into rogue one. Maybe the protagonists could inadvertently come across a cache of imperial holodiscs containing secrets and atrocities while stealing the death star plans...

Yeah, I doubt we see it in Rogue One. The Geonosians were a buncha creeps, so their extinction wouldn't hold enough dramatic weight for the film. Plus, it comes before the events of this film, and even before the events of Rebels.

It does...R1 happens literally right before ANH unless Rbels still is happening during/after ANH .

While the Geonosis genocide was addressed in Darth Vader #4, from the things I've heard in Rebels Recon - we might find out what exactly happened on the show in the future. So, I doubt it will be addressed in Rogue One

That would be cool, especially since we learned so much about the planet in TCW. It would be cool to carry that over to Rebels (more-so than a name-drop and the planet appearing in the background).

A brief mention wouldn't be out of the cards, especially to highlight the brutality involved in constructing the Death Star. I don't think it will go much beyond that, though. I wouldn't count on them showing a scorched planet or Geonosian remains.

The possibility of Rebels continuing past ANH seems entirely plausible to me, and something I had not really even considered before your mention of it. Thanks for opening up a brand new path of thought for me on this!

As stated by others, it is not likely to occur because of the timing. R1 occurs right before ANH. The geonosians have been wiped out for at least 5 years,if not longer, as we know that during the time of Rebels they are gone

I think we're unlikely to, but to be honest, I don't think that's a bad thing. Between Rebels and the Darth Vader comic, I think we've learned enough about what happened to Geonosis to infer the rest for ourselves. With a diegesis as large as the Star Wars galaxy, the time it would take to fully spell out Geonosis' fate would be better spent elsewhere, or at least in my opinion.

Agreed. If they kind of mention it in passing I don't mind but I don't see it being a main plot point or anything.

    Welcome to the Cantina btw!

It would be a nice nod, and a nice tie to the PT - I'd like literally a line mentioning it (little things :) )

Rebels is going to continue to be the biggest tie/ nod to the PT we will get. And I think it's doing a damn good job of it thus far, including more visuals of Geonosis post-DS that we've seen yet.

The Imperials use Geonosians as slave labourers in the novel Tarkin. There's a chance they could appear Rogue One, and an even slimmer chance that they could provide assistance to the Rebellion.
