Thinking about characters who could appear in Rogue One and you have to look who is established in Ep4.
So Wedge is almost a guarantee but maybe some of the players from other episodes such as Crix Madine or even Ackbar before they achieved their higher posts later on? What are your thoughts?

I would love to see Wedge in R1. He's one of my favorite minor characters. It'd be cool if he hand a more prominent role this time around.

Not sure about Crix Madine. I don't think he defected to the Rebellion until after the Battle of Yavin. We'll probably see General Dodona though.

I would like to see some of those characters make an appearance. Not sure if they'd be main or even side characters though, perhaps in some cases more in the realm of Easter eggs.

It really would be interesting though to see some of those future Rebel leaders in their Imperial posts, possibly even showing their defection from the Empire in the movie.

I agree, if Madine were to be in the film, I'd like this to be the genesis of his doubts about the Empire.

The only reason that I'm not actually sold on Wedge appearing is that they'd have to recast the actor, but Wedge is in ANH (which takes place like days after this film) so I think it'd be a little odd because we wouldn't have the decades to justify changing appearances like the prequels gave us.

In fairness, 2 separate people played Wedge in ANH. A difference in voice and appearance would not really cause any more confusion.

After over 30 years of watching those movies and getting familiar with Dennis Lawson as Wedge, it would be confusing.

This, more or less. While technically Colin Higgins was Wedge, it was only for that single scene in ANH, and Dennis Lawson is much (much) more recognised in the role.

I would see no problem if they cast another actor to play the younger Wedge. And he is my favorite Star Wars character.

I'm not crazy about recasting, but I'm not 100% against it either. The problem with recasting in this case is that Wedge in this movie will be the exact same age as Wedge was in ANH since the film takes place directly before ANH, so there is no age gap to help explain the difference in looks of the actors. If they do recast Wedge, they need to make sure to get someone that looks very much like Dennis Lawson.

Also, there are actually three actors(one was voice only) who played Wedge in ANH, here's an interesting blog post that Pablo Hidalgo made on it previously on Starwars.com

I do not care that much about it. At this point it would be OK if only we have more of Wedge despite the actor. I want more from Wedge not more from Dennis Lawson. I wanna see Wedge in other missions and stuff, how he joined to and raised in the Rebels, and how he was chosen to the Death Star raid. That would be pretty neat!

I'm fine with another actor as well, but if the actor is way to different looking, it will be distracting for Star Wars fans. The actor doesn't have to be a dead ringer for Dennis Lawson, but they need to at least look similar, otherwise, what's the point.

I think Ackbar is a good candidate, because he is alien - it doesn't matter who plays him. He is one of the military leaders of the Rebellion. On the other hand, Wedge appears in two new novels and there are hints in Aftermath that Wedge might appear in Rebels. It seems they decided to use him this way because Lawson doesn't want to play him.

I don't really see the need for any of them, to be honest. It's a big galaxy...

I actually think we'd be more likely to see somebody like General Dodonna, as he was in charge of the Yavin base at the time.

I'm not real crazy about character cameos unless they make absolute sense in context of where and when the film in question takes place. Since Rogue One seems to take place days and perhaps even hours before the events of ANH, you'd want to limit Rebel characters to those who were at the Yavin base in ANH. That lets Madine and Ackbar out.

And really, as much as I like Wedge as a character, he was basically just another pilot until the Death Star assault. At most, we might expect to see Wedge walking around the hangar or, if there is a starfighter strike in addition to the ground mission to get the Death Star plans, we might see ol' Red Two as part of the starfighter attack. But I wouldn't expect much more than a brief glimpse of him (and hopefully, as Admiral Petty mentioned, they'd get somebody who resembles Denis Lawson to play him.)

What I hope we don't get, though, are classic characters being written into the story just for the sake of showing them off to the fans. It's all too easy to get the "ain't it a small galaxy?" thing laid on too thickly, and it can really start to get in the way of the story if it's done too often and in ways that stretch continuity too far.

Less is definitely more with classic character cameos.

Or, what you said - much more simply and to the point than I ended up doing. ;)

I'd like to see Akbar, but personally I think an R2 or 3PO (or both) cameo is more likely....

I wholeheartedly concur. Instead we should see General Willard (commander-in-chief of the Rebel Forces) and General Ristt ("Commander Hudsol"), whom we saw again in the Holiday Special animated film (suggesting at least him survived the evacuation of the Yavin IV base)

I think Wedge would be fantastic. He is actually the one who recruited Thane Kyrell in Lost Stars. Would be cool to see him in a recruiting role or at least make a quick appearance.
