Almost everyone is waiting for the 2nd Trailer to drop next week. My question is: How much stock do you put into a trailer regarding your expectations? Will a good or bad Trailer actually change your expectations for the movie? Or do you take a Trailer with a grain of salt and shouldn't judge a book by its cover?

I'm the type of person that my expectations are firmly implanted regardless of a good or bad trailer, but a great trailer will make the anticipation much harder!

I don't think my expectation can become any higher because of Rian Johnson. Haha! But to answer your question, you should take trailers with a grain of salt. Trailers are a marketing tool after all.

I don't think it will change my expectations (which are extremely high already). The trailer will be great, there's no doubt about it. Even if the film sucked, they would make it look like a masterpiece. ;)

What I can say is that it will definitely change the way I envision this film. It happens after each trailer. We'll get a better idea of what the vibe is, certain plotpoints will get context etc. It all influences how I imagine a film and it may take some getting used to since I think about TLJ so much.

That's actually one of the reasons why I'm so excitied for TLJ.

Mark Hamill also said that's a good thing. He really likes working with Rian.

Unless the trailer turns The Last Jedi into some kind of torture point, I don't think that it can hinder my excitement. Why just hinder? I don't think that I was waiting for a film with this much anticipation as I do for Episode VIII, even when compared to TFA.

    @NinjaRen

Not important? That's like saying Yoda's master is not important. Or how the Rebels got thier ships is not important. Or did Luke ever fall in love. Or did Leia ever 4give Anakin.

    OF COURSE IT'S IMPORTANT!

Yoda's master isn't important though. He doesn't even have a master in the new canon, right?

    That's absolutely not important.

this is how i feel about it. while i'm opting out of the trailer, it wouldn't impact my expectations either way.
we're never entirely sure what we're seeing in what they choose to show us, or what any of it means in context of the actual movie.
and running all your expectations based on over-hyped marketing is just a sure way to be disappointed anyway.

Trailers never truly show what we see in the movies, so my expectations won't change, but my hype might increase.

Possibly. I won't know until we see it. Hopefully more than the teaser.

After Stallone's Cliffhanger trailer fail in the early 1990s (he jumped off a cliff in the trailer and it was later cut in the release) I've learned to take trailers with a grain of salt. Take a look at some of the marketing pieces they released for Rogue One ("I rebel", the showdown with the TIE fighter at the tower, etc.) and while I am still excited for the movie I know that the trailer isn't going to make or break my desire to see it. Sure, RO was different because there were extensive reshoots, but I look at trailers as a cool "reminder" to see the movie, and not much of a "preview".

Does anyone know if there are going to be in-theater previews of TLJ?

I imagine if I see a sequence showing x-wings making a trench run, my opinion on the movie would probably take a decent dip.

I feel like at this time the story is pretty well established and well set for the TLJ. I have high confidence in Ryan Johnson. I really liked the promotional material we got to this day, counting the trailer, the bts-reel and other canon stories leading up the TLJ.
So Im pretty sure the new trailer will leave my expectations unchanged. To me, a bad trailer is a trailer that reveals too much of the story, so I'm fine with snippets and ambiguous scenes.

    Not at all.

My expectations are that this film will be in competition with the OT entries (I love the PT, but in my personal rankings of the films the OT come out on top) for recognition as one of the best SW movies.

So, for me, great trailer = more excitement, and meh trailer = it's not a fair representation of the film.

LFL wins my money either way (not that I would ever stop them).

Yeah, I'm with you there. There is so much buildup with everything we got in TFA. Other than Starkiller base I think the story so far is pretty much awesome. Many people claim they didn't like TFA, but the world seems to be obsessed with who Rey's parents are, whether Luke will use his lightsaber, who Snoke is, what this new balanced approach to the Force is. Im hyped beyond belief. I also expect this movie to be real gritty - not gritty like Game of Thrones - but still traumatizing enough to cause controversy for a Star Wars film.

I take the claims of the producers, that this movie might best ESB and Hamill deserving an Oscar seriously.
