They could certainly go way back in time like that. I thought it worked very well for the KOTOR games. And the idea of blazing new hyperspace trails is killer!

Since they've got all of the SW props and miniatures scanned and converted to digital models now, though, I'm assuming that they're probably going to want to stick with the "modern-day" SW timeline for awhile.

If that's the case, then they can always limit the number of planets using the game storyline as justification. Bethesda's RPGs have massive maps, true, but they're still limited to the area of the in-game world where the story is being told.

My main concern is that if we're planet hopping (which we have to do... it's Star Wars!) then when we get down to a planet, we're probably going to end up having much smaller maps to run around in than the usual Bethesda RPG, due to there being multiple planets that will each need a map. You can't really cram three or four Skyrims into one game, after all.

So, I wonder if that would tend to bring us down to a choice between multiple planets with small maps, or a single planet with a suitably huge and varied map. Not that either poses an insurmountable problem, of course. But Bethesda (or whoever) would have to make some pretty tough decisions there in order to create a game that's actually going to run on people's systems.

That being said... I REALLY want to play that game!!

Sure, and well, if I recall correctly, Respawn's game was the one with lightsaber motion capture. Don't think we're getting a SDSDSD game: as you rightly said, they're repeated across the board anyhow by multiple publishers.

I'd love to see a game with some lightsaber combat that was more than just bashing two sticks together. Though obviously there are limits as to what can be accomplished via a game controller. As long as the thing has an engaging story, though, I reckon it oughtta be pretty decent.

I would really like a PSVR + PS Move lightsaber game. If you have the hardware, try Fruit Ninja VR and imagine the possibilities. :)

Yes, Battlefront has a VR level, but I don't think it has lightsaber combat.

Oh man, I'd love to have the extra scratch to put together a good VR setup. Maybe one of these days.

For now, it's XBox One or PC for this grizzled old Star Wars freak. :)

I've always been a big fan of flight simulators, from X-Wing and Tie Fighter back in the day and then later the Rogue Squadron and Starfighter/Jedi Starfighter games. Fighter Squadron mode on Battlefront was fun for a while but endlessly dogfighting with no real objective except for occasionally getting to fire at a helpless transport got boring after a while. So I'd like to see another game like that, set it any time they like: Old Republic, PT, OT, ST, I don't care.

And of course another something like KotOR would be nice.

    That'd be cool.

I wouldn't even mind a bit of a retelling of KOTOR- especially given how both games were originally rushed anyway (especially the second one) this could be a good chance for them to really nail it, while still hitting the same beats of the original.

Sounds good to me. All Disney has to is get Obsidian on it, and give them time to actually work on it this time.

They'd have to get greenlit from EA too, right? Don't they have a deal for all Star Wars video games?

Yes, but maybe Disney could make a new deal to where that is not necessary.

Up until 2023, yes, EA has a deal for the SW license, though I’m sure that Lucasfilm probably had a clause wanting a certain number of AAA games to be made.

They’ve made two AAA games in four years released in the same franchise, they’ve scrapped Visceral’s game (and Visceral itself) and have gone radio silent on Respawn.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Lucasfilm back out of the deal to some extent come 2020. EA might be able to build a case for having the Battlefront franchise for a while after the deal is over, at any rate, but I can see LFL looking elsewhere for developers of their single player titles.

I hope so, EA's doing an awful job so far.

Star Wars sells itself. Making Star Wars games shouldn't be all that hard. Making good Star Wars games shouldn't even be all that hard.

    Exactly.

Even if Visceral’s game was sub-par, you know that it could sell ~10 million units just like Battlefront 2015 did.

I think the biggest problem, though, is the Story Group’s involvement.

Not sure if I read it here or elsewhere, but, supposedly, Visceral would be designing the game and the story, etc., but it would take weeks - if not months - for the Story Group to respond as to whether or not they would actually be allowed to do these things. It seems that the relationships between the two groups were strained at best; I’m not sure why a member or two of the Story Group weren’t picked to check in with them every other day to ensure that this never happened, but alas.

The only real fix I see to that particular problem is Lucasfilm returning to gaming itself, internally, but I find that highly unlikely.

It wasn't about that. There was no art director attached to the project for a very long time and becase of that they had to rely on the Story Group's input.

There are a lot of reasons, not just the lack of an art director, which resulted in this happening, and I was only citing one of those said reasons. I’m sure that there are many others that will be revealed in the coming months and years, as well as others that we might never hear about.

This was revealed by a now-former Visceral employee when talking to Kotaku:
