I believe that he would, though it might have been another way. I'm not sure Qui-Gon would have stayed within the Order himself, he already started defying Council's decisions. It is possible that they would have left together. Or, he would leave, leaving Anakin behind. But, Qui-Gon would certainly not have left the Order for personal power - which is what Anakin always desired one way or another. Eventually, the result would be the same = (dark).

I think Qui Gon would've kept Anakin away from Palpatine. I also think the older and wiser Obi Wan of Ep. III would have done a better job of that too.

    good thread!
I think Qui-Gon would have trained Anakin differently and ended up with the same outcome. Consider:

    1. I think he would have still fallen in love with Padme, and being trained at too old an age, fail to master controlling his feelings/attachment to others.
    2. Qui-Gon also didn't sense the "elusive" evil, and probably wouldn't have known to have kept Anakin away from Palpatine like the other Jedi failed to do.
    3. Qui-Gon represented the arrogance of the Jedi in that era (leading to their downfall)... So in some ways might have been worse than Obiwan given the risk Anakin represented. (He also is ultimately ihe one who unlocks becoming one with the Force but only through his death... This contrasts the obsession with medichlorians / quantifying the Force vs. Understanding it's greater power. In life, he seemed to have all the flaws of the other Jedi)

It's been fun reading all these responses. You guys have definitely brought up some good points.

Personally, I don't think Anakin would've have turned to the dark side if he had been trained by Qui-Gon. If it was Anakin's "destiny" to become Darth Vader, perhaps that's why Qui-Gon met his noble end, so that Anakin would be trained by Obi-Wan and ultimately fall to the dark side.

But for arguments sake, let's say that Anakin was not destined to become Vader, and that he could have fulfilled his role as the chosen one without first turning to the dark side. I think Qui-Gon would have been the ideal master to train Anakin and help him bring balance to the force.

I know this is legends and not cannon, but in the Jedi Apprentice book series it's revealed that Qui-Gon had a padawan before Obi-Wan named Xanatos who fell to the dark side. I think because of this experience, Qui-Gon understood the temptations of the dark side (he even struggled with romance, loss, and attachment issues himself) and would have been more attuned to Anakin's struggles and would have been able to help Anakin avoid the pitfalls that his former padawan Xanatos did not. But as I said, none of that is canon now.

It's also interesting to consider how things might have turned out differently had Anakin sided with Mace at the end of ROTS. Here's a fun little comic that has Vader pondering that himself.

Palpatine would have pulled all registries to make Anakins life miserable thus shaping him to what he was meant to be...Palpatine doesn´t give up on the chance of actually make the prophecy real....And bring balance to the force.

I think the ''holding you back'' moment would still happen no matter who was master, Anakin was on a path destruction no matter who trained him, his duel in Mustafar with Qui-Gon would not have lasted on with youth against age.

The reason I say no is because of the impact of Qui-Gon's death had on the events. Qui-Gon was very good at understanding the limitations of the order while playing with the bounds of regulation. This would have allowed Anakin someone like him in the respect that he still struggled with submitting to authority. I also believe that Qui-Gon would have dealt with Anakin's mother's release...one could speculate that Ben was trying to do what the order was telling him he should.

I always struggled with the element of the Order being about relieving the universe of suffering and injustice...but they just leave Anakin's mom as a slave...come on folks really...I truly believe Padme' should have stepped up on that one; the kid saves your planet and you can't go pay to get his mom out of slavery? It would cost the amount of your head.dress!!!

Anyhoo....yes it would have been different----> Though you could make the argument that the Emperor would have really won without these turn of events...so would it have really been better or worse? How would he have manipulated his way to the destruction of the order without a messed up Anakin?

An interesting take. I think a key point of the series is the Jedi have grown too comfortable, even pompous as an order, and that is a big part of their downfall. So ignoring Anakin's mom is consistent with other things they've done to loose their way. (Add this to tbe fact they loose touch with understanding/detecting the dark side; becoming military generals; having a scientific explanation of the "living Force" in medichlorians.. Etc... )

All indications point to Sidious being exceptional a "reading the future" while being capable of obfuscating his presence amongst a Jedi order that's largely lost their way. So, he would have been able to manipulate the situation unopposed, regardless of the master training Anakin.

This, I agree that every event that transpired in the prequels would have to happen in order for Anakin to become the black-suited and "more machine than man" Darth Vader.

On a side note, I never real thought about if Palpatine would have found out about Anakin if Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan would not have gone to Tatooine. At some point in time, Anakin would have had to use his burgeoning Force abilities and I do think Palpy would have eventually come to sense his presence. That would've lead to training him in secret, Anakin being much more fluent and able in dark side abilities and not constrained in narrow-minded Jedi ways. :p

Obi-Wan seems like he grew to become almost exactly like Qui-Gon (who, despite what the EU says, has never really been portrayed as particularly rebellious). So, yes, probably. Anakin began his training when he already knew what true emotional attachment was. He had a mother, and knew her, and missed her, and watched her die.

He would definitely have rebelled against the monk-like nature of the Jedi, and if he hadn't fallen for Padme, he would have no doubt been manipulated by Palpatine anyway, because his upbringing supplied all the fuel that was needed for that to happen.

I believe "Vader", would not exist with Qui-Gonn. The man understood the living force, and though he had flaws, he was, from what I've seen from the PT, wiser than PT-era Yoda. Yoda is AFFECTED by things like RIGIDITY, DOUBT, etc. If any of you have read Dark Disciple, he even approves Mace's Idea of assassinating Dooku, which broke almost all Jedi conduct during their existence. Only towards the end of TCW in the Lost Missions and ROTS is Yoda like he is in the OT, wise, cranky, but thoughtful, more spiritual, feeling and doing what needs to be done. He has flaws of his PT self still, like believing Vader must be killed, but for the most part, Qui-Gonn and his teachings made him a changed man. Qui-Gonn appears to Anakin on Mortis too, and Anakin has a deep respect for him, and less of a btoher-like relationship with Obi-Wan, and I feel Qui-Gonn, with his experience and maverick ways, would've handled Anakin and kept him away from unnecessary things like "politics", and by extension, Palpatine. The PT is a politically based conflict story, but with Qui-Gonn, it would not have been. I still think Anakin would have fallen, but only if he fell in love with Padme, and less because he was slowly twisted and fearful about Padme due to Palpatine. But Vader, and the suit, not as likely if things didn't go the way they went.

I can just picture a prequel trilogy with Anakin on the run after confessing his love for Padme to Qui-Gon. Palpatine having amassed "unlimited power" frames the two Jedi for a political murder that further advances his political scheme, and commands the Jedi order to hunt them down and bring them to justice. Obi-Wan in disgust at what the council asks of him severs his ties with the order and reunites with them and Satine. Obviously, they get together again and the films become some kind of action/ adventure, thriller, romance film full of plot twists. The Jedi are trying to uncover the Chancellor's motives in an effort to save their friends, Palpatine is doing everything he can to maintain power, Qui-Gon, Anakin, and Obi-Wan are torn between their loyalties to the order and their new life they have established. Is it selfish to love them when your very presence in their life endangers them? etc.

Man, this sounds like a @PrincessLeiaCB3 targeted story now! :D

Our little home boy Anakin was going to turn one way or another. He had plenty of issues.....one in particular: rebellious. He didn't deal with submission and orders all that well. You don't need a Jedi master or even a Sith to be an influence for that....that'll just fester and get worse if not dealt with.

yes only because Qui gon was amazing and anakin would not have turned evil under his teachings while Obi-Wan never really taught Anakin how to control his emotions very well

that read is pretty cool although some of it looks off within the context of things.

I actually didn't read it to be honest. I was more so referring to the illustration of a fully lightside, master jedi version of Anakin.
My vote was casted for "Yes" by the way. Unless Anakin and Padme never fell in love, Anakin will have always fell to the dark side regardless of his master, that inevitability is plain to see.
If Qui-Gon's death would be replaced by Obi-Wan's in TPM, then the story might sway in a direction that leads Qui-Gon to fall to the dark side and Anakin have to confront him. That would be an alternate dimension possibility I'd love to see play out.
Still, it's amusing to entertain the idea of a fully skilled, master jedi version of Anakin.

I subscribe to the theory Obi Wan was the quintessential embodiment of the best master any Jedi in training could have hoped for, and Obi Wan at the point of Qui-Gon's death was stronger than QG. Anakin was actually better off with OW and had the best chance with him of following the path of light. You can lead the horse to water but can't make him drink, right?
