I love the idea of being a Jedi. Ever since I was little I always wished I could be part of that world. As a realist I probably would border on being a Dark Jedi because I occasionally can give into my anger in some instances. But I would never want to be a Sith, to much anger and hatred fill their lives.

    Frodo, i Maclunkey love you!

to answer the OP, i would certainly try to be a Jedi, but i would probably struggle quite a lot with keeping my passions under control. i doubt i'd ever make it to the Jedi council...

I would be a Jedi, but The power of the sith lords look really cool always, they seem stronger, but the Jedis always win.

    I'd train myself.
    a) To escape sith oppression
    b) To avoid the babbling meanderings of Jedi and their doctrine

I like Revan and Plagueis because neither of them seem concerned about the opinions of the world around them/before them.
Revan saw the need to fight the Mandalorians rather than wait, I agree, if you believe in life you fight for it even if they are goading you into a contest of strength.
Plagueis saw the need for abstraction, iow to take himself out of whatever held him back (and I get the impression he even was able to abstract himself from the darkside at times).

If I was in that world, I'd be armored, with a sheild, saber staff, and would fight hand to hand and dirty.
I'd grind away in isolation and gritty self purpose, and never be loyal to either cause. The jedi would see me as dangerous, and the sith would see me as too elusive to handle.

Grey - I'd live my own way
I'd search for and steal(infiltrate) relics and holocrons
Gather information and set up traps for anyone who'd screw with me, like an anteater
And gain more training than the jedi or sith would allow underneath them

iv given this a lot of thought in the past. so much so that i crafted my own character to be a Sith. Jedi can do no wrong right? that's the idea... they are basically the catholic priest of the star wars universe(minus the child molesting). in other words they must be humble and unassuming, hence the robes the wear. and those thingies btw are called tabards. that's not my style. i like to show off ever now and then. being a sith isn't all bad. it doesn't mean you have to be bad all the time. it doesn't mean you can never do good.

here is what being a sith means to me. you desire power and having the upper hand in whatever form it takes to acquire what you want. you spend time perfecting your powers and suffering through the pain like an athlete to become stronger in your chosen path. you take what you need. no apologizes.

my character is a recruiter for death star 3 for prospective apprentice and storm troopers alike. come see what the Sith can offer you today!

I would have to go Jedi. Not really a contest they are the force of GOOD. I think Qui-Gon_Jinn was perhaps my favorite Jedi he was led by the force and did what was right even when the stodginess and dogma of the council got in his way.

I really hope people picking Sith here are joking. Cause you know Sith are Evil.

Interesting I would be declared a sith by Obi-Wan cause I believe in absolutes. Apparently only Sith believe in absolutes, absolutely.

The Sith are no more evil than the Jedi. Sure, the Jedi try to frame the debate as "good versus evil" and "Selfless verses selfish" but it's really about the role of our emotions. The Sith embrace their passions without any compassion. The Jedi deny their passions.

Both paths are evil. Our passions are part of us, and they shouldn't be denied. But neither should they be given license to harm others.

But that's enough philosophy. Let's look as some of the Jedi's actions and see for ourselves if they're good or evil.

The Jedi lied to Luke about his parentage so they could recruit him to assassinate his own father. It was Darth Vader - the Sith - who told Luke the truth.

The Jedi Council refused to train Anakin because he loved his mother and was afraid to lose her. That's really sick if you think about it. A heartless sociopath who didn't give a damn about his mother's slavery would have been accepted, but a kid who loves his mommy is a red flag.

Mace Windu was willing to seize control of the Senate "to ensure a peaceful transition or power" from democracy to Jedi-ocracy. In a not-entirely-unrelated incident he tried to assassinate the legally elected Supreme Chancellor. Mace saw himself as judge, jury, and executioner, above the laws of the Senate and subject only to the authority of the Jedi Order. He saw his cause as so holy that any unholy act which served his cause was rationalized and justified, and even necessary. That's not very different from what just happened to French satirical cartoonists.

The Jedi create emotional robots of their Padawans. Passions are forbidden. Love is forbidden. The very things that make us human are forbidden. Ben told Luke to bury his feelings deep down, like it's healthy and good to suppress them. Yoda told Luke to let his friends die rather than rush off to save them, because Yoda wasn't finished turning Luke into a killer yet. When Luke told Ben he couldn't kill his own father, Ben said "Then the Emperor has already won." Luke was being used as a pawn in a war between two misguided sects - one that denied compassion and the other that denied emotion, and both of them fighting a war that ruined millions of innocent lives.

Of course, the Sith are evil, too. Because a life with no compassion makes a person a slave to their passions. The Sith are slaves to their passions, just as Jedi are slaves to their Jedi Code. Of the two, I'd rather be Sith because it's better to over-embrace my passions than to be terrified of my own emotions.

Jedi are taught to be mindful of their passions as they can lead to the dark side. That is not the same as denying them entirely. Also there are plenty of passions that should be out right denied like pedophilia for instance. Jedi are taught the importance of compassion, the love for others. They are to serve others for the good of all. Remember also that Jedi and Sith are philosophies that exist not just as "ways to live your life" but they are responses to the fact that some people have power and connection to the force far and above normal folk. Meaning that the path of a Jedi or of a Sith is how such individuals respond to life with these powers. If I was going to pick one I would want to pick the side that chooses compassion not the side that chooses amoral personal advancement.

True, but pedophilia wasn't Little Anakin's problem. Loving his mother and not wanting to lose her was Anakin's problem. That was the connection that caused the Jedi Council to decide not to train him. Pedophilia is a straw man argument.

So let me ask you a question, but before I do, I want to assure you I'm not trying to play Gotcha! or set a trap for you. I really want to know what you think, and I'll do my best to keep an open mind.

Were the Jedi right to decide that Anakin's fear of losing his mother was reason enough not to train him in the ways of the Force?

Well pedophilia is a passion that I would not want to see indulged I chose an egregious example because I don't want this to turn into conflicting moral theory. If my neighbor thinks my car is awesome I don't want him indulging his passion for the open road in my car by shooting me to get it.

The Jedi did not invent their entire code just for Anakin they over centuries learned to fear how passions could go out of control for those who shed compassion or empathy.

As for Anakin's specific case the Jedi did not train him because the power his fear would have if they taught Anakin to tap into the force. It wasn't like they sat there and said this kid loves his mom so lets not train him. The issue was how fear would effect him not his love for his mom. They sensed fear that could grow out of control in him and chose to leave his power at the level of good reflexes and random insights rather than train him to be able to wield all sorts of magic powers. Where they wrong? Moments after he failed to save his mom he committed genocide on a tribe of sand people. He feared to lose Padme how did he respond to this fear? Slaying Jedi still in the temple including a bunch of kids.

Some greatest evils are often twisted "good desires." There were not upset that the Anakin cared for his mom. The felt that he was not a canidate for great and potentially dangerous power.
