YODA has been rumoured to appear as a forceghost in ep.7 & that started the discussion of how they would do it: puppet or cgi?

& that brought me back to something i have thought a lot about in ep.1 -Do I prefer the puppet or cgi? -WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK???

On one hand I think that the skin on cgi Yoda looks strange, almost semi-transparent (especially in closeups) but on the other hand the puppet doesn't really look like Yoda.

So I can not decide which one I prefer, but I am sure that you all have decided :) so let the discussion begin ;)

think I would have to go with cgi...But only because that puppet was terrible. If they had a better puppet that actually looked like Yoda, I would say puppet all day.

I went with Puppet, but I would have liked to see him look more like he did in ESB. Even if they used a puppet then touched up facial definition with CGI, like in the 20th anniversary E.T. release, would have been their best choice. If he is in episode VII as a ghost they should go this route.

The Yoda puppet in The Phantom Menace was terrifying to look at - changing it to match up with the other digital models was one of the better post-release changes that George Lucas did for the Prequel Trilogy.

I'm also open to seeing a CGI Force-Ghost Yoda, as I believe that it would allow for more dynamic movement. I'd imagine that a kind of motion-capture would be necessary for there to be more "practical".

I never understood why they so drastically changed yoda in TPM. He was 870 years old...did they have to go with a strangely younger attempt with the puppet? Like Yoda DRASTICALLY aged in 30 years?

That always struck me as odd. That, and it looked like a puppet. In the OT, you knew he was, but it never pulled you out of it like the TPM puppet did.

They should just put MoCap balls all over the original puppet and have Frank Oz walk it around and puppeteer. Then they can superimpose the new and improved CGI ghost Yoda over it.

The CGI work on the new Yoda in Phantom was brilliant. They found a way to show so much emotion in his eyes and I would love to see that Yoda in 7.

That's a sketchy issue, but given the "scandal" they had (if you would call it such) with the puppet they originally used for the prequels, I would just go along with the CGI version. I mean, if he's supposed to be a force ghost, he'd be transparent anyways right?

EDIT: Realized I didn't really respond to the original inquiry. I myself prefer the CGI in EP I, as the original honestly just looked weird and freaky. I find myself mentally put off by that form of Yoda, which seemed so remarkably unlike the puppet we came to love in the original movies. The supplanted CGI for home release is better by leaps and bounds.

If they could find the OT Yoda puppet, then I wouldn't have a problem with him being a force ghost in the ST. Episode 1 puppet is strange looking and CGI Yoda just lacks that true emotion like all CGI characters.

CGI fits more with the rest of the movies in that Trilogy. I prefered the puppet from the OT though.

old OT Yoda is probably laying around gathering dust somewhere at Lucasfilm archives, it would be sooooo cool if they used the puppet if they are going to have a force ghost :)

For Phantom Menace, CGI is totally better. That puppet was horrendous. If he was to appear as a ghost in VII, they should use a nice puppet though

    CGI.
Seeing Yoda freed up and able to walk, run, jump & fight makes the CGI worth it to me IMO \m/

The TPM Yoda puppet... OY! I will never understand how they could possibly have bungled that so badly, or what genius decided that Yoda should look like Greg Kinnear with Neil Young's sideburns.

Had they actually bothered to recreate the Yoda puppet from ESB, there's no doubt in my mind that the puppet would be the way to go for TPM. But as badly as they screwed up the new sculpt, there's really no way to fix that other than to substitute the CGI version in future releases.

I'll stay with the puppet because I don't like any changes in the movies. But...both are bad. One (the puppet) looks weird, omg those eyes...hahahha....the second (CGI) is the same of AOTC and ROTS (or similar) and to me the Yoda CGI does not work, looks fake and watching him jumping and figthing are one of the worst things of the PT.

after seeing the SDCC star wars panel & Abrams talks about why they made so many "puppets"/alienmasks etc. because of how the light reflects on it & the depth & how the actors can react to them it will probably not be a cgi forceghost Yoda in ep.7-9 (if he is an any of them)

If they really want to please the fans, they could simply brush the dust of the old Yoda puppet from the OT if he will be in any of the new movies as a forceghost :)
