If they would have made a puppet as good in ESB, absolutely yes. But when I was a child my dad wanted me to start watching the OT then the PT. At the time Jar-Jar was the best, but when I saw Yoda's puppet in Phantom Menace it just felt wrong. 2006 I watched it at the age of 6 and just felt that something was wrong.

How is cgi leading 15 to 10 at the time of this post?????

There are big problems with that puppet, yes. Its top lip is flat instead of angled upward, the ridges on its head look like washboard abs instead of skin, and its brow is way too boney. Nevertheless, I still have to vote for the puppet. That's just who Yoda is.

This reminds me of that old thread: "Should we ever have seen Master Yoda use a saber?" Lucas' original design was for Yoda to be a wizard and not a warrior. And that's why he's perfect as a puppet. He doesn't need to bounce and twirl around. If he'd kept his saber pocketed and fought Dooku with just the force he'd have wiped the floor with him. Though, the fight with Sidious would still have been a draw. If Yoda does carry a saber, it has to be more ceremonial than utile.

Lucas was always better suited for post-production than actual story telling. I'm sure the art department made several Yoda puppets for TPM. And it was Lucas who approved the monstrous one.

since Yoda is almost 900 years old, that 30 year span between the PT & the OT is not a long time, they should just have used the old Yoda puppet from ESB & just thickened the hair & comb it. He is mostly sitting & standing, so the new puppet couldn't possibly have been more maneuverable, but they probably wanted robotics in the face to make the eyelids close smother etc. ... (with that said, I have no idea if they used robotics in the new puppet)

But Yoda died. He's a Force spirit. They don't age - and if Anakin is any precedent, he could appear in a physically younger form if he willed it.

Agree. If Yoda will appears as a forceghost in the ST it must be the puppet from the OT.

Like Pomo said, Yoda could appear as younger CG Yoda, or as older puppet Goda. Either would work as a Force Ghost, since Yoda could "will" his appearance to be however he wanted.

That Phantom Menace puppet, though, was HORRIBLE. Ruined every scene he was in, for me at least.

I've always had a special name for that *thing*... Stoner Yoda.

You disagreed with my post so I disagreed with yours.... It seems what we specifically disagree on is whether or not the ugly puppet ruins Yoda's scenes. You say, "yes." I say, "no."

I still prefer the ugly puppet to the CGI. If Lucas had just used a better puppet we wouldn't even be talking about this nonsense.

    Ah, I see.

Not that I take the ratings particuarly seriously, but that's not exactly a logical way of rating posts, lol.

Yoda will always be more than a puppet. If CGI will make Yoda look more like himself, I'll take CGI. CG Yoda looks great anyway, and actually looks like Yoda, compared to that terrible puppet.

If it's about "CG versus practical", I'd choose practical whenever it makes sense. If a decent puppet (preferably a puppet copied from the original, but made to appear slightly younger) could have gotten the job done for the Prequels, I'd take it. But, alas, Yoda was simply too active for a puppet. And interchanging between puppet and CGI would be very jarring.

Part of the problem is the fact that puppet doesn't look like Yoda at all. So, choosing between a CG Yoda that actually looks like Yoda, and is used in the following two films, and a puppet that, honestly just isn't Yoda, is an easy pick for me, and for, apparently, 17 others, to answer your question as to how CG is leading puppet.

Aside from looking stoned, he also looked like the Gremlin from the Twilight Zone Movie. To me, at least.

The puppet always gave me an uneasy feeling inside. I don't know why. Needless to say I was pleased to see the CGI version on the re-release. Would rather have the puppet but only if it could be done right.

I casted my vote for the CGI version of Yoda in episode one. I don't mind Yoda being portrayed as a puppet, or CGI, or cartoon. I would just prefer Yoda to be CGI in TPH for the sake of the prequel trilogy's flow.
It would create a better transition into AOTC.
As far as further Star Wars films in general, I hope to see more puppets being used in balance with CGI.
