The puppet is a horrifying monstrosity. I'm going with the CGI on this one.

The false Yoda puppet that originally was in Phantom Menace was an abomination and is easily my favorite Lucas post theatrical release change despite me generally being more of a puppet guy.

I thought Yoda was a puppet in "TPM". I like CGI Yoda from Episodes II and III.

The false Yoda puppet abomination was replaced for the Blu-ray release with the CGI model from those films. At least it is Yoda again and not his weird cousin impersonating him.

I might prefer puppet Yoda but I sure prefer it be Yoda at all first and foremost.

The CGI-version. The Yoda Puppet in TPM was just terribly ugly.

I prefer Yoda in the PT to Yoda in the OT, tbh. The puppet really wasn't too great, if we're being honest.

CGI Yoda has always been better. It was really impressive in E3. Too bad they made Yoda ugly again for TLJ. Don't know how they managed to make it even worse than in the OT.

i always have liked the yoda puppet in EPISODE 1. I have the old TPM copy with the puppet and always watch it instead of the TPM with the digital yoda.

both are fine in my opinion. but I guess for nostalgia reasons I enjoy the TPM puppet yoda

For the sake of consistency, I prefer the CGI Yoda because the puppet looks SO different from his appearance in the next two films. (Not to mention, the CGI version definitely looks better than the puppet, which is borderline creepy.) That was one thing where CGI worked for the prequels. But he definitely needed to be a puppet in the sequels, so I’m glad they went that route.

I agree with @Trev, it's better to have a consistent Yoda in the PT. The puppet was not that great, but it wasn't completely awful either. And I'm glad TESB puppet came back for TLJ, again for the sake of consistency.

To play devil's advocate, it depends a lot on the set and lighting, so it's understandable that he can look different even if the mold is the same. Personally, though, I'm happy with the look of Yoda in TLJ. Except his first full shot. ;) Looks weirdly digital there. Later in the scene he's amazing.

I get that but to claim it's "ugly again" or "even worse" is just such a lame attempt at trolling lol

srg is spot on. It's the lighting and the shots.

The puppet in TLJ is indeed almost identical to the one from the OT (you can see he looks the same in the behind the scenes documentary), but he does look different in the film itself, especially in his first frontal shot. Its something about the light and angles.

Now, the CGI one from the prequels was great for them (and yes, the puppet from TPM was awful), but the puppet from the OT was IMPRESSIVE for its time.

After watching TESB on Sunday and watching the Yoda scenes from TLJ on YouTube I' ve started to wonder if the reason why he may look off to some is the technological advancement that happened in the field of puppetry across te last 35 years. In TLJ, his face is able to express some truly nuanced emotions, which were simply not able in late 1970's. On a side note, this a problem Brad Bird faced while making Incredibles 2. The first film has obviously aged and because of advancements in CG animation the characters look slightly different than they used and it did threw me off a little bit. Because of that, the opening scene of Incredibles 2, which will be the fight with the Underminer, was rendered with a technological handicap - so that people can ease into the new look of the film. The TLJ Yoda didn't have this space to accomodate the viewers to this new look, as he popped up for just one scene (well, some of them at least, most of us, including me, get used to his new look after the first full shot of him.) Also, a puppet is a real thing, unlike a character in an animated film.
