I heard on a podcast someone say that Palpatine "defeated" Yoda in their duel in Revenge of the Sith. But I had always really looked at that as a draw. But it led me to think, what does everyone else think? Have I just been misreading it this whole time?

Both walked away alive but I tend to think Palpatine got to remain emperor making him the victor. Yoda's goal was to end Palpatine's reign which he did not.

Depends on the definition of winning. In the greater sense of the word and context, Palpatine won because he lived and continued to be the Emperor.

If we mean simply according to powers and ability, then it was a draw.

I never gave it much thought, since the battle was cut of short. Like others have said, Yoda didn't stop the emperor from being the emperor so I would count it as a win for Palpatine. Yoda himself considers it a failure, as evident by his dialogue with Bail Organa.

A fight can have a clear victor without anyone getting killed. I mean, we obviously know who won the Obi-Wan/Anakin duel.

Yoda got his little green butt kicked. He said so himself - “Failed, I have.” I know it’s unpleasant for me to say that, because we were all rooting for him. But he lost. Period.

Tbh, i wouldn't have needed that fight. Sure, it was interesting, but somehow I'd rather had them stay kinda mysterious.

Lost I have not. Giving him time to regret his evil ways before sending sending a random farmboy to kill him, I did.

It is a W for Papa Palps and Yoda concedes this. Side note - I remember watching ROTS in the cinema as a kid, when Yoda just bodies two of the Emperor’s guards, did anyone else burst out laughing?

Yoda had a lot of sass in that exchange.

I originally voted "Draw", but you all have swayed me to a Palpatine victory.

One thing that's always frustrated me is how Yoda just walked away.

I get that from a meta perspective he had to be around for Luke, but I don't think Yoda knew that. From his view, Palpatine was a rising and immediate threat, the rise of the Sith. Just because Yoda fell down a bit shouldn't have been reason to run away- and if he'd been clever, he could've done something like turn on one of the cameras in the senate chamber (there were ones in the Jedi temple, so surely the senate had them) to broadcast Palpatine in his true Sith form.

Granted, if Palpatine knew the camera was on it could've backfired by grandpa Palpatine pretending like Yoda was a Jedi assassin sent after him, but at that point it may be worth the risk since that's already what the public believed anyway.

Yes, I've always felt the same thing about Yoda just walking away. I don't understand why he left when he did. He definitely could've kept fighting.

Lol. Yeah, that's probably what it was. He was too excited about that vacation to Dagobah that he needed.

I'm pretty sure that GL says on the audio commentary that the guard-thumping got a bigger laugh than he anticipated.

In my opinion, there is a really clear reason for this: The audience is simply starving for some good news at that point!

That must be it! Especially when you're a kid, ROTS is such a relentless film in terms of the 'good guys' getting crushed, friendships disintegrating, the protagonist turning. That little moment gives a slight bit of relief from all that. Shame if those two guys were actually just Senate guards from Naboo, Hank and Chuck, just carrying out a normal day at the office - bam
