If you really think TLJ/TFA are worse than the Ewok films I recommend you quit watching future Star Wars movies. You might like Solo since it's more nostalgia juice, but that's almost over.

Don't worry, I have no plans or intentions to see Solo, a film whose main cast member required acting lessons, whose original directors were fired for making the film a comedic farce, and was then re-directed by Richie Cunningham from Happy Days.

Solo will make a ton of money, and the Disney fanboys will say Solo was a success for that alone. But I want to see a good meaningful and respectful Star Wars film that respects the early Star Wars saga, not one that is only made to sell lots of tickets and toys just for hijacking and resurrecting past characters, make them say, behave and do weird things just to make money for Disney.

You call it negativity. I call it pessimistic caution based on experiences in recent reality.
You can keep your over-enthusiastic corporate media brainwashing hype, thankyou.

It's pretty difficult to rank the films at this point. They kind of fall into tiers. I have noticed that I find A New Hope more and more boring as time goes on... I suspect as time goes by and more films are made people will gravitate away from it. It's slow and the FXs are dated. I'm curious how young people will look at it when there's a wealth of great fantasy films out there that are better.

I really don't care that some modern day kid, who has raised on a diet of trashy Marvel/DC superhero comicbook films and X-Box might dislike A New Hope "because it has bad graphics and is slow and boring, man/bro/dude".

That kind of assessment of such a ground breaking, different, universally loved and award winning film - which literally invented the term "blockbuster" - is beyond contempt. I would personally disown such a kid, or put up for adoption....

By the way, it won Oscars for Best Visual Effects and Editing forty years ago this year.

I still love most of ANH. Tatooine, Lars house, the droids, old Ben, Cantina, MF arriving in the DS, Ben x Vader, Tarkin...
The only thing that I find a little boring is the preparation and the attack at the DS.

But I think TLJ is above ANH in my list now. Lets see in a few years.

No one watches the Marx Brothers anymore and their comedy is timeless. A New Hope is a classic for a variety of different reasons, but tastes change over time. There really wasn't anything like Star Wars when it came out in 1977. As much as I love Star Wars I'm not going to argue that the OT is a better fantasy series than the Lord of the Rings. So far nothing in Star Wars has reached that level of quality, but I hope that future stories can get there and I understand why younger people would think differently.

I won't look down on people for growing up in a different time than I did.

Now that I have seen TLJ a few times, I am starting to form my opinion regarding it's rank among the movies. I will revisit my post in this thread later in the summer after I do a marathon of all 8 movies and get a better sense of them.

    1. ESB- The best made SW movie as there isn't one thing I would take out.

    2. ANH- It is more like 1A, but I think many forget the big thing about this movie: It created this world and these characters from scratch, and that is an outstanding achievement by Lucas.

    3. TFA- Just a fun movie that harkens back to the OT days, as JJ does not get enough credit for introducing new characters while not being overshadowed by the old characters.

    4. ROTJ- The Throne Room Scenes are probably some of the best in the Saga, and the Ewok parts are some of the worst in the Saga.

    5. TLJ- While I have come to appreciate and really like the movie (much more then I did in December), Luke flipping the Lightsaber, Leia flying, and the Yoda scene will probably never totally work for me.

    6. ROTS- It's definitely the best of the PT, and a great movie in that context. Anakin's turn to the darkside still doesn't work for me 13 years later.

    7. AOTC- Suprisingly I like a lot of things about this movie in the context of the PT, as the whole Obiwan/Clones subplot is great. The Padme/Anakin romance is still cringworthy.

    8. TPM- There is a lot of good content in there about the history of the Republic, The Jedi Order, Palpatine's roots, but the pacing of this movie just drags in the middle.

Coming up on 30 months and you are still in stage 1?
Actually never mind. I think this is stage 2 masquerading as stage 1.
    Fascinating.

    1. Empire Strikes Back - perfect
    2. Star Wars - classic
    3. Return of the Jedi - would have been better without Ewoks
    4. Rogue One - underrated
    5. Revenge of the Sith - reasonable, but a hugely missed opportunity
    6. The Force Awakens - rehash of episode 4
    7. Attack of the Clones - soulless
    8. The Phantom Menace - almost unbearable
    9. The Last Jedi - unspeakable

Seeing The Last Jedi on Blu Ray several times now, it confirms my opinion of it as one of the best Star Wars films ever made. My new ranking:

    1. EMPIRE
    2. ANH
    3. TLJ
    4. ROTJ/TFA
    5. R1
(infinity of time and space here)
    6. ROTS
    7. TPM
    8. AOTC

The more and more I watch of TLJ, the more and more I blame JJ for his unoriginal setup for the ST and this thin story. I was naïve after TFA, but it is more and more looking like a retread of the OT. I say this because I really don't care about Episode 9 as the story of Resistance vs The First Order has been done before, and Rey vs Ren is in some ways similar to Luke vs Vader in ROTJ. In saying, that I still think the quality/execution of the ST films are better then the PT films, but I think the PT story is better and more original.

So if I had to rank on quality:

    1. ESB
    2. ANH
    3. ROTJ
    4. TLJ
    5. TFA
    6. ROTS
    7. AOTC
    8. TPM

But if I had to rank on rewatchability (the story drives me to watch the movies again and again):

    1. ESB
    2. ANH
    3. ROTJ
    4. ROTS
    5. AOTC
    6. TPM
    7. TFA
    8. TLJ

    1) New Hope——ultimate mood. Han is awesome, Obi-Wan is bad@$$, Vader is great. It’s such a wonderful beginning.

    2) Empire—-Lando, Yoda, At-ATs, Boba Fett, so much great stuff. Han has great moments, but starts to slip a little into the wimp he will be in ROTJ

    3) Rogue One. Nostalgia/tie-ins done right. Best Vader moment ever, the attack by Rebellion with Red & Gold leader...best space battle in the series.

    4) ROTJ. Leia in the gold bikini (yum). Puppet Jabba, Luke kicking butt and taking names. Ackbar!! Awings, Nien Nub, Ewoks aren’t as bad you remember.

    5) TFA. Incredibly unoriginal. Still a good performance by Han, too much “Rey is maREY sue” because she knows every language, etc. no space battle. Lots of good stuff BUT NO LUKE SKYWALKER BECAUSE JJ IS A HACK.

    6) TLJ. Has lots of wonderful parts but RJ spent most of the movie A) showing how clever he is B) Tossing away much of the crap JJ left him with C) subverting the resolution almost everything the audience loved abt SW or expected to see resolved/explained. D). Continued the marREY sue stuff. E) Took Luke Skywalker and rejected everything established so far...because he’s so clever!!! Some good stuff in the movie but so much crap and just bad narrative overall. Very funny in lots of parts.

    7) ROTS: Great lightsaber battles. Terrible Anakin/Padme dialogue. Order 66 was well-done. Lucas still can’t write dialogue.

8)TPM. Liam Neeson and Ray Park save this one. Mostly a Yawner.

    9) one of the worst sci-fi movies that made money. Hayden is terrible, all the dialogue is bad, the plot is so idiotic I can’t even continue talking about it. Just a disaster.
