Your post TLJ ranking of Star Wars movies

The lack of well choreographed action is what really kills the Jabba escape for me.
Endor is just bleh. It's okay filler. It's the Canto Bight of the OT for me.
I understand what Lucas was doing with the whole "primitives beating the advanced" but....come on.

I am VERY mixed on TLJ. Interestingly, regarding your theory, I definitely liked Rogue One more than TFA but I did not especially care for the prequels (at least in comparison to the rest).

I've clustered my ratings to how I find the franchise/Saga, I really wanted to like TLJ but I think sadly for me, the risks they took did not play well with me, the path they've taken Luke is away from my my personal ideal which the EU has helped develop over the years, (which is fair enough, others i'm sure love it). The comedy was a little off to me, floating in space scene was terrible. The action was fantastic and aesthetically it looked amazing, the plot just didn't grip me like a middle of a trilogy film needs to do. There were some great ups, but a lot of big downs IMO.

 

Ahh if we are giving ratings I'll play

1. ESB - 9.9 (only because I don't believe perfection is achievable)
2. ANH - 9.0 (Should be top as it made me fall in love with SW but empire is the 'holy grail' for me)
3. TLJ - 9.5 (In technical respects it is the best film in the franchise. Everything, the directing, acting, cinematography, writing, dialogue is just on point and no film since ESB has been that edgy or pushed the envelope that far.)
4. TFA - 8.5 (safe but very well executed)
5. R1 - 8.0 (Great film)
6. ROTS - 7.0 (This should be lower but the final act is epic)
7. ROTJ - 6.5 (Upon re-watching as an adult I've since realised this has the cheesiest script of any SW film, barring the final confrontation scene. And One other word...... Ewoks)
8. TPM - 4.5 (I actually dislike this film the most overall however it has some great scenes and Liam Neeson deserved better)
9. AOTC - 4.0 (I could rate this lower however it would be disrespectful to Ewan McGregor and Christopher Lee, they carried that film)

I actually registered after occasional lurking because TLJ hasn't left my head since I saw it Friday morning...

My ranking:

1. The Empire Strikes Back*

8. Phantom Menace
9. Attack of the Clones

The entries with asterisks may switch places upon further viewings. I will be seeing TLJ for the second time tomorrow. On initial viewing, Rogue One was my favorite. My fandom came from the earlier 90s novels (Heir to the Empire and sequels and the X-WIng series) and the X-Wing games almost as much as the original trilogy, so seeing a war movie with actual consequences set in the Star Wars universe really spoke to me. It has since slipped slightly because it is still retreading familiar territory.

The ONLY reason The Last Jedi isn't a clear #1 is because the execution was flawed in many ways, for me. In terms of what Johnson seemed to be striving for, it was by far the most audacious Star Wars film, it's just that he didn't succeed as well as he could have. Empire, the second-most ambitious of the series from a "beyond surface fun" perspective, did not strive for quite so much, but it succeeded at everything it seemed to be trying to do.

In terms of advancing Star Wars beyond the familiar, The Last Jedi was needed. I left The Force Awakens disappointed because it covered no new ground. I was satisfied with it, because it needed to be "safe" to get butts in chairs and reassure the world that the prequels would be avenged, but I wouldn't have been happy if The Last Jedi had been another standard Skywalker story, and that it wasn't. I don't know what JJ will do with episode IX, but there are infinite opportunities now to take it in new directions.

I will say Rogue One actually set up some thematic elements I see in The Last Jedi: Rebellions are built on hope. "I am one with the Force and the Force is with me" (even though I'm not a Jedi). War has costs. Etc.

For what it's worth, here's a dual ranking. The first number is audacity in storytelling. The second is execution.

I used to rate TFA higher, but TLJ actually makes TFA a mostly useless film, except for the death of Han Solo.

 

That's right The only moment I went WTF. First she talks about the "Only fight" in TFA and now she is fighting out a union dispute. This really is my only gripe.

As for this thread, I'm glad to see that many fans share my sentiment about The Last Jedi and how amazing it is. As that old man said:

"this is just the beginning"

reading all 6 pages to this point.. i find it both comforting and disturbing that there is barely a single list the same as anyone else's.

whether you love TLJ or hate it.. look through these lists and realize how differently we all see these films.
