I meant to read this earlier but forgot about it. Thanks for posting this.

 

What do you mean the Vader mask is also different? It's exactly the same mask we saw in the trailer. Here are just some lines highlighted. But feel free to try to spot the differences.



My reasoning here is that, since the mask is the final one, the chances of having that cyborg character in the movie are definitely higher. But of course this is far from definite.

I think one of the following options is possible:

1. The cyborg in the concept art was not the final iteration of Kylo. However, it was very close to final since the final Vader prop is seen in the concept art so it was definitely done in the later stages of pre-production.
2. The cyborg is final concept art of an unmasked Kylo.
3. The cyborg is final concept art of a battle damaged and unmasked Kylo, possibly how he looks at the end of the movie after confronting our heroes.
4. Maybe the cyborg is Snoke.

 

I totally agree with the logic behind your post... but it seems to me the Vader mask doesn't necessarily date the art one way or another.
Just because Vader's mask was an element that stuck from that particular concept, doesn't mean they knew it would at the time. We merely have the privilege of knowing it did through hindsight.
For example, the snow/forest environment was clearly in place before Kylo's final design was nailed on - hence the concept of Ren with the "target face" in the forest. And another concept has the ambiance and look of the Jakku village attack pretty solidly in place, yet a Vader-like placeholder is used in place of Ren.
The look of Vader's salvaged mask had to come from *one* of the concepts - it may have been the first of 100 variations that they ended up going with. Or the second. Or the 10th. And Vader's mask being in the film may have been something that was a constant in the script before the look of - or even the very nature of - Ren was confirmed.

It seems to me the design of Kylo Ren's costume went through many iterations - let's not forget how varied the concepts for General Grievous were. The cyborg simply being a earlier version of Kylo Ren's look seems like *the most likely* scenario - IMHO, of course.

 

Why won't the cyborg stuff die? Seems like we have to have this conversation once a month.

 

Wasn't it rumored early on that Kylo, and I even heard Poe, wore cybernetics he didn't need over his body?

 

Eh not really. I mean some people interpreted the concept art as depicting a mask

People forget that there is a defined difference between speculation, rumor, and leak. These three things get jumbled up a lot

Edit- well don't forget confirmed but I consider that a whole separate thing from those three

Oh my God, I can't stop laughing!

I mean, I shouldn't be surprised, since they did the same thing with Catching Fire (which is odd, if you've read the books and learn just how weird Capitol fashion is), but still!

Yep he fooled me I almost thought this was leaked reveal of Snoke. The guessing of what he will look like will continue.

 

I did find it interesting that one of the choices of makeup was called "Empress"...

 

Make-up has known SW quotes and previously-unheard-of quotes like "There has been an awakening" (which we know from the TFA trailer but still, it's new), "Immune to the Light", and " I will finish what you started". Those last two quotes, hmmmm.......#hype

Also, what the heck is a "Sage"? lol

 

Interesting. "I will finish what you started" - that's got to be a candidate for Kylo talking to a certain helmet...
The sage, I'm presuming is Maz.
Also, "Apprentice" is a Dark Side look... which I think reveals the true dynamic between Snoke and Kylo Ren, does it not?

 

1. a profoundly wise person, esp. one famed for wisdom.
2. an experienced person respected for sound judgment.
3. wise,judicious,orprudent:sage advice.

Could be Luke? The final look seems to be called Jedi and has green color! Or is this a different look?

When I see "I will finish what you started" , I think of the concept art of the "cyborg" staring at the Vader helmet...

 

Shhhh don't bring up that cyborg concept art! It's frowned upon. For all intents and purposes it never existed!

But yeah, MSW claims there is a location in the star destroyer called "the padded room" where Kylo is in. I think his probably a bit crazy talking to Vader's helmet.

 

Exactly... I hope that line is in the movie at that time... sounds crazy...
