Updated With the Winners! LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Review: Exploring the Galaxy Brick by Brick

It's time. After years of waiting, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is here for fans to explore the Star Wars galaxy brick by brick. With over 300 playable characters, from Jedi to scoundrels, to creatures and droids, the game has plenty for fans to see, but the big question is: was it worth the super long wait?







The answer is a resounding YES. When we attended a preview of the game, TT Games Studio Head Michael Denny said this game was a 'massive achievement for this studio' and that 'one thing that is evident is the team's passion for this game, and to make our best LEGO game ever.' This sentiment rings through, down to the very last brick of each level. Players will enjoy seeing their favorite Star Wars movies come alive in brick form, as well as the jokes and puns expected with LEGO humor, but more than that, players will love the freedom in this game.

First of all, the gameplay is super fun. Players are welcomed into the game first by animated scenes for each episode of the Skywalker Saga. The first of each trilogy is unlocked, so you'll need to choose where in the timeline you'd like to start. I chose The Force Awakens, which is highlighted by Rey sitting beside her downed AT-AT with BB-8. The game starts up right in the middle of action on Jakku. I played as Poe Dameron getting the plans to find Luke Skywalker when the First Order attacks. I also had a friend with me during this review, so we were able to try out the co-op mode as well -- they played as BB-8 alongside my Poe.



The controls were super easy to navigate whether you're an avid gamer or not. There are tips throughout the levels and on the screen to direct players to their next objectives. The new camera perspective is great to make you feel like you're inside the action, but it does take a little getting used to. The combat with characters is a blast, another improvement from previous LEGO Star Wars titles, and was my favorite part of the game. I battled stormtroopers like a pro, and it was easy to make cool combo moves with different buttons instead of mashing them to always get the same results.

As I said earlier, the game truly shines when it comes to the freedom to explore the levels. A player can follow the story mode or go off and discover the challenges for each level/planet with each character, as each 'class group' has a different set of skills. When my friend dropped off as a co-op player, it was easy to quickly switch between characters to complete challenges. I was able to play as Poe, BB-8, Rey, and Finn on the fly. The levels range from high-action combat, like running through the Supremacy and trying to escape Niima Outpost, to puzzles to unlock doors and collect parts with Rey for Unkar Plutt. The environments are so open they can be a little overwhelming at first. There are so many details and opportunities to create your own story... It's really up to each player how they want to spend their time in between story chapters. You can interact with creatures and characters in the levels, or stick to the path that is lit up for you as you work your way across the missions.







Players looking to have the full galaxy to explore should be prepared to dedicate some serious time to this game; it has tons of planets, characters, and vehicles to make each experience unique, but it will take time to build up kyber bricks, experience, etc. to unlock everything. However, that's what makes the game challenging. There are moments where you won't complete a puzzle on the first try, and that's okay.  If you're willing to give the time to this game, you'll find that there is something new behind every brick. Another note is that there are many notifications and flags throughout the game, and things can get confusing sometimes, but once you figure out what they mean, it's easier to stay focused. What if you get stuck? Don't worry, as you can look to the helpful droid H1-NT for tips and hints to get through a level or challenge.







From the cinematic opening sequence that weaves through the stories of each episode, to the classic hilarious LEGO moments, like the hot tub full of stormtroopers, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is a game that will keep you coming back to explore time and time again. It celebrates everything that the Star Wars galaxy encompasses, and adds in the humor and fun you expect from LEGO titles. Want to ride a gonk droid? You can. Want to take a wampa to Coruscant? You can. How about playing as a rancor and activating a galaxy rave mode? Yes and yes.



Players will have so much fun exploring the different worlds they love and creating their own stories with their favorite characters, while also reliving fan-favorite moments from a galaxy far, far away. So, get ready to live out your own Star Wars adventures, whether it's using a Jedi mind trick or dueling with baguettes (there's a mode for that) -- the LEGO Star Wars galaxy won't judge you and, in fact, encourages it.







LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is set to release tomorrow, April 5th, on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Microsoft Windows). At last, experience fun-filled adventures, whimsical humor, and the freedom to fully immerse yourself in the LEGO Star Wars universe like never before.
