Has this been stated somewhere during the journey to The Force Awakens in one of the novels?
If not, then that might be an assumption... because the specter of Bane tempted Yoda.
I know the Grand master claimed he was an illusion, but that doesn't mean he was right.

With the detonation of the old, anything is possible with the new, until stated otherwise...

When seated across from the charred mask of his grandfather, Kylo asks to be shown the power of the darkness, one more time. The questions that I had were: did Snoke Plagueis trick him? Or was Anakin's ghost stuck in the netherworld, somehow caught in between both sides of the force? If Hayden smiled at the end of RotJ, then I'd say no way.... but with that creepy "Dang, I wish I could still stalk Padme" smirk, I'm not sold on him being "one with the force".

With Shaw gone and the old canon dead, it wouldn't shock me to see Darth Vader's ghost in the Sequel Trilogy.

There are some who believe that already happened a long, long time ago.... when Shaw was replaced.

 

I'm leaning towards Snoke tricking him .
