This exactly. Leia knew Rey was fond of Han, similar to how Luke was effected when Obi-Wan died, Leia just put her arm around him. She was comforting her and herself at the same time.

While I do believe there needs to be some Han Solo grief scene to reflect on Han, we need to remember in ANH after Obi-Wan dies, like thirty seconds later Luke and Han were cheering destroying the Ties and Luke was having naughty thoughts about Leia.

So much was cut and crammed into this movie. With the pacing at light speed, they should have added 10 mins to let some stuff sink in and do more exposition. The whole Maz's castle scene needed more time. A lot more time. The way it stands, it didn't work for me.

We need to start petitioning a Director's cut. I'll take a 2:40 version of this movie!

They could and should release an extended version as force awakens part 1(95 mins) and part 2 (93 mins)
Release as separate DVDs and double the profit!
Ha I'd actually buy it, I really wouldn't have an issue with a significantly longer directors cut.

 

The thing that bothered me about this scene, was watching Chewbacca walk away. Leia already knows Han is gone. She felt it, but there is zero effort between Leia and Chewbacca to reach out to each other. These are two characters who had embraced earlier in the film. I think it has a lot to do with Rey being left standing there alone, and Leia needing to hug someone, but I don't understand why Chewbacca got sidelined again and again in this film.

 

Chewie went ballistic after Han died. He shot at Ren which was probably not easy to do seeing as he most likely watched the kid grow up and was most likely 'family' to him as much as Han and Leia.

 

This stuck out to me, as well, but thinking over it: 1) he was injured and 2) sometimes you're too upset to be consoled. Sometimes hugging a loved one is harder than not.

That could be rationalization, too. So.

 

I know it was shocking move by Kylo but expected IMO, poor Han I'll miss him.

 

Now I really want a scene in Episode 8 where Chewie pulls Kylo's arm off or something.

 

That is true, but I would expect the director to visualize that emotion better. Being injured did not stop Chewbacca from unloading on Kylo Ren and countless stormtroopers, nor did it stop his rescue of Rey and Finn. He's obviously a hugger.

 

Maybe we will get......Force Ghost Han!!!!

 

Y'all are overthinking it. Even if they'd never met they now have a very special bond - Han Solo. I think it's more powerful that there's not a 5-minute expository dialogue on it. It's all in the eyes.

I agree. The biggest plot points are lost in the messy editing.

 

Maybe with his connection with Leia will give him a free pass with the force like Padme here.

 

Oh no, she lost her will to live remember. Padme had no interest or influence on Luke or Leia. Maybe thats why Luke leaves, he's got too much of his mother in him.

 

Perhaps Chewie blames Leia for Han's death after she request he bring him (Ren) home?

 

Wasn't there a rumored line where Leia says "I don't know how he'll cope"? Maybe thats part of the scene that got cut out indicating that Chewy was inconsolable.
As for Rey, she was standing there all alone and I'm sure Leia saw a lot of her past and her brother's past with Ben Kenobis death and just felt the need to console her.

 

I know!! I would expect something like this:

 

And there is the problem: the movie was not long enough. I just got the TFA Visual Dictionary (great read by the way) and there are many shots of scenes that are not in this film at all! What's worse is I don't think we will ever get to see them! If the LOTR films can be 3 hours then why can't Star Wars do the same?!!

 

I'm going to have a tough time watching those scenes and thinking "Wow this got cut out for the Guavian Death Gang, Kanjiklub, and rathars?"
