One of the things that initially bothered me about TLJ was Luke dying after performing the Force Projection. But the more I think about the similarities between Force Projection and a Legends ability called "Mind Walking" the more I'm okay with it. I read about Mind Walking in the Fate of the Jedi series. Mind Walking occurs by meditating and then the spirit will leave the body and enter a realm called "beyond shadows." In this realm, the spirit can travel to actual places simply by focusing on the place you want to go. The difference though from Force Projection is that while Mind Walking you only interact with others who are beyond shadows as opposed to people who are in the physical realm. But I suspect that a similarity between the two is that any injuries a person would suffer while Mind Walking would effect their physical being. If that is indeed the case with Force Projection then Luke's body would have suffered the pain from all those laser blasts and Kylo's lightsaber going right through him. And if that ultimately holds true then the fact that Luke died makes sense and it makes what he endured completely bad ass.

When Kylo & Rey have their first force skype call, Kylo mentions that she can't be the one doing it because the effort alone would kill her. I think this was foreshadowing the fact that force projection takes so much energy that it typically kills the person doing it.

Yes but Luke was doing it at a Force Nexus. (I'm assuming that Rock was a nexus) Also he's the son the son of the Chosen 1.

    Luke should of lived! :(

I think it is possible to live after force projecting as I also think the force skype was a form of projection that was performed by Snoke..and he didn't die from it

Thats what I touhgt. I think his "dead" or "sacrifice" was a mix of things. One of them was he was super exhausted. The exhaustion helped Luke to free him from his phisical body.

Aside from the foreshadowing, I thought Luke didn't die of just exhaustion. I got the impression he willingly went into the Force because he was at peace, and by being with the Force he would 'become more powerful than you can possibly imagine', so he'll just come back stronger in Ep IX

Like how they deprived Yoda of oxygen (canon confirmed - Yoda's species breathes oxygen) to get him deeper into his Force visions in the Clone Wars television show!

Then again, Luke may have been affected by the altitude. [OMG, plot holeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!]

Do we know the atmospheric content of Ach-To?
Maybe it's an atmosphere that supports midichlorian growth and response which is why he could pull it off!
