Would kind of undermine the OT and i think that is probably JJ's fear.

    Yup.

"Yeah, we want to honor the classic movies, both in story, look, and feel. And to accomplish that, we are going to change every character we love!"

Very true, but I'd prefer to have them die instead of being completely different characters.

I think you guys are being unrealistic. In life, things happen. People change. I wouldn't rule it out.

Return Of The Jedi: "I'll never turn to the Dark Side."

The Force Awakens: "LOL NEVER MIND, UNLIMITED POWAAAAAAAH!"

Yeah, I don't think that radical of a change is going to happen.

Yeeeaaahhh, I've said this before (with all due respect, mind you), that there's NO WAY that the Mouse House is going to turn Luke to the dark side. The potential outcome of such a decision spells (in my opinion) Mickey Mouse's DOOM in the eyes of the PRIMARY fanbase of the OT(the 40-something's)...I'm one of them. Turning Luke to the dark side COMPLETELY negates the formula that GL set out in the beginning and makes Luke (in short order) the weak one that fell...can't....WON'T happen...IMO. Just sayin.....

While I'm inclined to agree, I don't think that this movie is just aimed to entertain Star Wars fans - I think that while the fanbase plays a huge role in this, they want to expand the market of Star Wars to a bigger audience than before. I think that's why they hired so many great actresses, along with several people of different races (Africans, Latinos, Asians) - they want to appeal to as many people as possible, including those that have never walked into a Star Wars movie before. (After all, if Guardians Of The Galaxy had been made exclusively for the fans of the comics, it wouldn't have done nearly as well.) There are talks that this movie could potentially bring in over $2,000,000,000 in worldwide ticket sales, with the possibility of piercing the $3,000,000,000 mark somewhere on the table. I don't think they could do that just on the power of Star Wars fans alone, plentiful though we may be.

But I do think that making Luke the villain would be the fastest way to alienate the fans of the first six movies. The entire story of him failing to be corrupted and even saving his father's soul after over two decades of atrocities produced an extremely powerful narrative, and seeing him fall for no other purpose than to be "edgy" would not only tarnish that experience, but it would be a lousy plot twist that would have no substance beyond shock value. Having him serve as a "crazy old wizard" for a portion of the plot makes a lot of sense, given that we've heard some of what he's been through on his own, and it's probably the closest to an antagonist role that you can get without butchering his character development. It could pave the way for a short "redemption" tale without the character ever actually becoming evil. While the Sequel Trilogy isn't going to ride on Luke Skywalker like the Original Trilogy did, he will be a major player, and the crew of the movies are bound to treat his character with the utmost respect.

Like I said, don't bet on it.

I mean c'mon really? All the little prissy luke fans think golden boy just ain't a human being. They know the script right! Of course... they know for a fact that no good guy can go wrong. They are completely un creative!

They act like they are scared of real change when it comes to star wars. That's what it NEEDS!

With all that has been said about Luke he is missing, a prisoner, guarding a force weapon, guarding a tomb, evil, not evil just a little cray cray and so on I think it is very likely that he will be good but you won't know it for sure right away. Remember Yoda's meet-cute with Luke. Count on reasons to question his sanity before he is fully revealed.

A meet-cute is a movie industry term for a charming way for people to meet. You know those sort of silly scenes where people encounter each and have "a moment." I was referring to ESB when Luke first meets Yoda, Yoda does not act that sane. He is a silly pest doing his best to annoy R2 and Luke. Luke's first thought is the little guy is crazy. He after all is looking for a great warrior. I imagine that the first scene with Luke will involve questions to his sanity, doubts whether he is still the Jedi they are looking for or if he is in fact good. The doubts will be cleared up but they will be there.
