Another Disney Plus Marvel series hits today, and it's the first that so far doesn't seem focused on an already established character!

I'll admit, I know very little about Moon Knight (just aware of him from video games like Web of Shadows and Marvel Ultimate Alliance) so this should be interesting.

I won't go into a full review, but just a checklist of a few thought, but be aware of spoilers for the first episode, "The Goldfish Problem".

    - The Egypt stuff is just cool. My knowledge of Egyptian mythology isn't nearly as good as it should be, but it's really neat to see what crops up here.

    - Hawke is a pretty compelling villain so far! I like his creepy cult leader vibe

    - The action we've seen (or rather, what we haven't seen) is really clever! I'm sure we'll get more traditional fight scenes eventually, but I REALLY liked how the first episode handled Steven's blackouts and their aftermath, especially in the car chase.

    - Speaking of which, I really like how the story is told from Steven's perspective. From what I can piece together, Steven is the alternative personality of a man named Marc. I don't want to speak for the Dissociative Identity Disorder community, but I think it's refreshing that Steven isn't some violent new personality- in fact, he's quite peaceful. On the other hand, Marc (who appears to be the "original") is the former mercenary (who still seems heroic, too). That twist, as well as the POV twist, just seem to be a refreshing take, in a world that usually portrays DID in a more sinister way like McAvoy's Split. Though I really want to see the DID community's response to this portrayal- don't take my words for it, I'm just a moron on the internet.

    - That mirror scene was immensely impressive.

What were your thoughts? Any big Moon Knight fans here that have theories?

I’ve read different iterations of Moon Knight over the years. Several series ago, there was a version where he was stark raving mad, the Disney+ show captured that somewhat ( it was the talk of my Local comic shop, even the cashier asked me what I thought of the series) in the comicbook he was in a psych ward which was very cliche, however, the story was really good, psychedelic images included, that literally warped your mind and amazed you. A must read for those that enjoy a good indie comicbook, not your usual comicbook superhero fare.

Then Warren Ellis took over the series, at this point I was hooked, I had to see where he would take character, he is a great comicbook writer in his own right, his version had Moon Knight dressed in a white suit and mask ( not the unusual cape and cowl, you can see his version in one of the trailers of the Disney+ show) MK was sort of a wealthy philanthropist, Bruce Wayne/Tony Stark mercenary type.

The most recent version is a horror iteration with vampires, werewolves, ghost/zombie, very gritty. It’s a great take on the horror genre, well written, edge of your seat storytelling. I’m not familiar with the current creative team but they’re certainly doing a good job can’t wait to read the next issue. I think they put together this team to accompany the launch of the show and it’s very good to say the least. I’m currently on the third issue simply because I read comic books digitally and visit my local comic shop every Wednesday and I have a huge pile of comics to read, huge back log… support your LCS :D

All the comicbook fans at my job are looking forward to this series. No one would believe that Disney would make such a prestigious series on such an obscure character. He is Marvel’s version of a crazy Batman.

Neal Adams (Batman Moon Knight), Bill Sienkiewicz ( Moon Knight, New Mutants), and David Finch ( Avengers, Moon Knight, Batman, and now the cover illustrator for the Walking Dead) are some of the talented artist who have made Moon Knight so popular amongst comicbook fans, MK never became as popular as the Batman. He never got a feature film but only a 6 episode series on Disney+. The show is very different from the comic books, so you can enjoy the series without knowing anything at all about this beloved character.

You give me too much credit, mate ;) (Although, I do have a Masters in "Religionology", with a focus on Ancient Egyptian revival in late 19th century occult circles. I guess that'll have to do )

I've only seen the trailer, and I don't really know the character, but as these things go, the show seems to do a great job with the Egyptology stuff. That is... it's about as accurate as the MCU portrayal of... say... the Nazis or Soviet Union, etc., (i.e., a fantastical comic book reinterpretation) but that caveat aside, they're mining Ancient Egypt quite well, I'd say.

For instance, walking, murderous mummies were absolutely never a thing in Ancient Egypt. The dead could haunt the living in the form of ghosts (several versions), but the body stayed still in death (although a strong argument can be made that a mummy was seen as not actually dead, even though they didn't move around in any folk tales or mythology).

But Khonshu is definitely an AE moon god (there were several), although he was never a devil figure cast out by the pantheon; that stuff is pure fantasy.

Likewise, the portrayal of Ammit as an evil deity is quite far off the mark; she was a monster that punished evildoers (i.e., eat them/their heart in the afterlife), so she was definitely a force for good, as the Egyptians understood it. (Of course, Ethan Hawke’s New Age guru cult-leader might have totally misinterpreted what Ammit actually was, and reinterpreted her as a syncretistic über-evil goddess for his own belief system).

And finally, I saw somewhere that Taweret is also in the show, although I don’t know how she is portrayed. In any case, Taweret was a protector and fertility goddess, linked to the Nile and to pregnancy – basically, she’s an angry mama-bear kind of character.

All in all, an interesting use of AE mythology (probably my favorite "fantasy Egypt" serving to date, as they all tend to be quite bad), so I’m pretty stoked about this show! Although, I will unfortunately not get to see it until April 14th, at which point the gf & I will binge watch the first 3 episodes :D

Very enjoyable and well done. Made me want more. My teenage daughter described Steven Grant's character as "adorable".
My daughter also mentioned something along these lines that piqued my interest: Dracula owes Moon Knight money? Do you know this backstory @Rogues1138 ?

The new Marvel Moon Knight series volume 2, is currently written by Jed Mackay and illustrated by Alessandro Cappuccio. Moon Knight has opened the Midnight Mission, a shelter or safe house for his people, some of whom are vampires… so yeah Dracula owes MK lots of MUNI, so to speak.

I suggest you pick up the trade paper back which collects the first 7 to 9 issues in the series in book form at your local comic book shop. If that’s too much of a hassle, you can download and read the comic books on a digital platform, Comixology, if you have an Amazon Prime account you can read certain comic books for free or get a preview, or you can subscribe to Marvel Unlimited subscription service. I believe it’s $8.99 a month or 69.00 for annual subscription.

Another great Moon Knight series which was release in 2016-2017 written by Jeff Lemire and drawn by artist Greg Smallwood is where Moon Knight is in a psych ward. Jeff Lemire is one of industry most prolific writers. You will certainly enjoy his take on MK. The series can be easily found on Comixology now an Amazon company.

Warren Ellis a British comicbook writer, novelist, and screenwriter, Moon Knight series: Moon Knight VOL. 1 From the Dead, which was released in 2013 “ Whether you are a longtime fan or new to the character this is a comic you need to read” - ComicVine.com ( this is the version of MK where he wears the white mask and white suit which was surprisingly different).

Don’t concern yourself with the Egyptian lore associated with the character, you will grasp it as you read the series, or on your on time, research Egyptian history which is interesting, but not a must to enjoy this character’s adventures.

thanks so much for breaking this down for us, I can’t wait to read your take on the entire series! I’ve always been interested in Egyptian history that’s part of the reason I find MK so interesting.

My immediate thoughts and reactions I gave to a friend after finishing the episode:

The good - Oscar Isaac kills the role!
The music is very solid and dramatic, and the songs chosen for the theme of sleep go well with what's happening around him.
The directing is super solid as well - the shots are dynamic and thrilling, and the cutting out of the action was a bold and very smart move IMO.

The bad - this episode's decision to drop us in the middle of the story is...interesting. I don't feel incredibly connected to anyone just yet, and I'm not sure how much time we'll be given to connect.
Also, the music, while awesome, is almost too dramatic for me. We haven't earned that drama yet.

The ugly - The known lack of MCU connections will hurt as much as it will help. (See early Netflix MCU stuff.) I don't need to see Sam and Bucky coming in to save the day, and I don't need a cameo by Doctor Strange or Wong, but acknowledging that this world is in the same universe as other MCU things - acknowledging that this world has a history that we've seen - is something I hope later episodes do. (Not unlike Shang-Chi or Eternals - keep the cameos and references light and breezy, and move on by.)

Ultimately, Moon Knight starts with that slow burn that only an MCU show can get away with nowadays, due to the grace allowed the franchise. It's a weird mix of tension and action that goes alongside that slow burn mystery, which means taht the action won't be the focal point, despite my belief that the action, when shown, should be a very cathartic and earned experience.

My friend liked it too. She said it was better than she though, but it still gave her some of the same disappointment that WandaVision and Loki did. Still, it left her wanting more!

Interesting review, my only criticism is I didn’t buy Oscar Isaac’s British accent. After awhile, I didn’t mind it, he is great in the role beside that, for me.

From what I've read he tried to make it deliberately convincing, since Steven isn't actually British but a personality of Marc, so he's what Marc's subconscious would see as trying to be British.

Which makes sense- but it could also just be Isaac's excuse ;)

So, I will say that the second episode hit on a lot of similar beats as the first. Granted, it did so in a way with the wool pulled off our eyes a bit more, so I do think it worked, but I feel that it might've been beneficial to have released both the first two episodes in the same week. I don't think the show is spinning its wheels (on the contrary, by the end of this week's episode I feel that the show has a bright and interesting future) but by not spacing these episodes out by a week this feeling could've maybe been better avoided, kinda like how Wandavision did.

So, just a few thoughts (granted, I watched this yesterday, so it's not as fresh):

    - The introduction of Layla already was interesting. Definitely sells me on the idea that Marc is the original persona- but who is Steven's mom?

    - Khonsu... isn't the good guy, right? That's pretty clear. But could Ammit actually be a benevolent being, whose will is being corrupted by Harrow? Or maybe both beings are simply evil.

    - Moon Knight in the classic costume jumping across buildings and stuff... even as someone who isn't really historically a fan of the character, damn that was cool. We have so little experience with masked vigilantes in their city in the MCU surprisingly, so this was pretty neat and it looked damn good.

    - Isaacs is absolutely killing it. Perhaps some of the best acting in the MCU.

    - The scene where Isaacs in the "suit" suit fighting the Jackal, I thought was edited sloppily when there were people walking around in the background, cars driving by, etc. But as it went on, it became clear that the background characters were actually a part of the scene, and it was brilliant, especially when it just looks like Steven is just a crazy drunk swinging at nothing. Pretty nice touch, actually.

    - I wonder how many people are in Harrow's cult? Seemed like that Swiss town was heavily in it, and he also has a community in London? Or, did they travel with him? Maybe they're a part of Steven's paranoia?

    - Khonsu and Marc break up at some point, right?

    - We're already going to Egypt! That's pretty cool!

I haven't seen this series yet but have they established where in the time line this show takes place? I think I may wait until the all of the episodes get release before I watch it.

From what I understand, there's a bus with a sign for some post Snap support group thing, so it's definitely post 2018, at the very least. So far, the show isn't super explicit about its connection to the greater MCU (which is kinda refreshing).

If I had to guess, it's probably just in the "modern" timeline (not 2022, but a few years ahead, around the No Way Home time).

I’ve heard rumors that episodes 5 & 6 will have connections to the MCU. Episodes 2-4 will solely deal with Marc Spector.

I’m currently reading the Moon Knight series from the 1980’s, and MK series from 2006’s run featuring artist David Finch. Reading multiple MK series in an effort to analyze how the character has evolved over the years. The 1980’s digital MK series apologized for the stereotypes of old which I thought showcased an evolution in storytelling. Marvel comics has strived to change with the times which cements my enthusiasm to continue reading their books.
So far, I’m enjoying Disneyplus’ MK series, the second episode, for me was as good as the first. Looking forward to episode 3 with much anticipation.

The mention of chaos, I think someone said it in the first episode, immediately makes me think of Dr. Strange and Scarlet Witch.

Issac's acting has been amazing, IMO.

From what I understand, the Scarab is related to a comics story where Moon Knight fights Kang through time.

Idk if that's the direction they're going with it, but if they did, it could be pretty interesting. Especially if the MCU has no further plans for Isaacs- you could establish Kang as a threat again (after Loki) before he comes in Quantumania, but this time a more brutal variant who might even kill Marc Specter.

And Kang has an Ancient Egyptian variant anyway, right (Rama-Tut)? Fits pretty well. Maybe Ammit or Khonsu are actually somehow his doing.

    That'd be pretty wild.

Though honestly, I still just kinda like the idea of this being a standalone thing.
