Prediction: Rank TFA among your favourite Star Wars movies

I am hoping that TFA will replace TESB as my favorite Star Wars film, but it won't do it with the Luke not doing anything for the entire film. If this happens to be the case, and it most likely will, I probably will rate it above ROTS.

I still can't believe they went with this idea. So lets make a Star Wars sequel, bring back the entire original cast, but we will let Luke sit on some island in a remote planet for the entire film... doing nothing... because you know... overshadowing. Following this line of logic, they will reduce his screen time in the next films to avoid the same thing. If the writers are not clever enough to find a way to bring Luke back without overshadowing the rest, then I seriously doubt their capacity to write the rest of the film correctly. I'm even afraid that when Rey leaves Luke, he stays behind to do more of nothing, and we don't see him until the next film... where he will simply die of old age... mirroring Yoda no doubt...

Personal Ranking: TFA; RotJ; ESB; RotS; ANH; AotC; TPM...... I think the general assumption seems to be, for some reason, that TFA will not be quite as good as Empire, but will be as good as or a little better than the other OT films. I

I really hope The Force Awakens becomes my favorite. It's fresh, New, updated and hopefully not as far away from the original trilogy as the prequels were (to me). What TFA has against it is me having known the original trilogy for decades. It's tough for a new movie to complete with not just the originals themselves, but my perception about them. Surely, I can't deny that the originals have been built up in my psyche over the years, knowing lore, and minor minor characters names, etc.

So this is wishful thinking:

ESB & ANH have movie magic and that is why they're considered classics. You just don't create movie magic and that is why so many sequels/prequels fall short. I still say its more amazing that ESB is a great Sequel then ROTJ & PT are inferior sequels/prequels.

ESB is the exception not the rule, the rest of the SW movies are pretty typical in Hollywood franchises.

The way I see it, TFA at worst will be a couple hours of fun escapist action, like many of the Marvel movies. I find it hard to believe it will be dreadful unwatchable bore like the prequels. So I guess that would put it no worse than fourth, but I suspect it will fall third behind Empire and the original Star Wars and a bit better than Jedi.

i have a new equation that i've derived from you guys' posts:

Luke x minutes = quality.



so, i have ranked the films based on this equation, and my hypothesis is validated:

TESB (the most luke, the most awesomeness)
ANH (second most luke, second most awesomeness)
ROTJ (too much ewoks, not enough luke. worst of the OT)

TFA (some luke at the end. and a flashback with luke. good movie. but no OT)

ROTS (short cameo from awesome newborn luke. best of prequels.)
TPM (no luke. bad movie)
AOTC (no luke. still bad movie)

 

If OT live and continuance of RotJ happy endings, and Luke has dialogue and makes at least a "football move" then:

ANH, TFA, TESB, ROTJ, ROTS, TPM, AOTC

If an OT character dies

ANH, TESB, ROTJ, ROTS, TPM, AOTC, TFA

If an OT character dies and Luke is a 2-second cameo then:

ANH, TESB, ROTJ, ROTS, TPM, AOTC

2-second Luke cameo I can easily live with, though I'd give TFA marketing an F for their horrifically bad marketing scheme that in fact is the cause of my disappointment; the movie itself can't be faulted, but JJ et. al. certainly can be. But kill an OT character and you've ruined the happy ending of RotJ. Just ruined it for every OT character and I would rather you just left them to their happy-ever-after than drag them into this movie only to ruin their lives.

I'll C your Luke and raise you a Han Solo in the fact that his screentime raises the movies:

ESB: Han bickering with Leia the whole movie is pure gold capped off by his best line, "I know."

ANH: Han doesn't appear til around 40 minutes so its almost as great as ESB.

TFA: Looks like Han gets the most screentime of the Big 3 and looks as cool as ever in the trailers.

ROTJ: Han still has some great lines, but was relegated to 2nd class to Luke in the Throne Room and Lando destroying the Death Star.

TPM: No Han, bad movie

AOTC: No Han, bad movie

ROTS: No Han, bad movie

Don't get me wrong I LOVE Luke as he is the heart of SW, but Han makes SW cool and gives it its soul.
