It's a tertiary concern, it can sometimes be used to tell a good story or keep hard core fans engaged. Think of it like a garden. You tend to it. It provides some pleasure, but the moment you need the room in the backyard for a new rec room, you build right on top of it.

Come on folks we just had 30 years of canon swept away with the flick of a wrist.

If they want a white alpha-male Boba Fett for their film, they'll cast one, it won't matter what some cartoon said. That's just how business works and that's been the history of "canon" with toy and comic franchises since ALWAYS. :)

They just blasted 30 years of it away with a nuclear bomb. This statement is precisely the opposite of the truth.

Pardon me if this has been mentioned and I missed it, and mind you that I don't really put any stock into what I say, just putting it out there... but what about the EU character of Jodo Kast being used as inspiration?

    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Jodo_Kast

I think he's pretty obscure. I only knew about him because he was an unlockable character for that Masters of Teräs Käsi game for the Playstation back in the day.

I think his story was something about wearing Mandalorian armor like Fett, and taking on the identity of Fett when it suited him, and eventually being hunted down by Fett. I doubt this is the route they'd even go, but technically it could allow you to cast a big actor (like Fassbender as the rumor once went) in the Fett role, have an adventure, and then show in the last portion the real Fett hunting him down.

Or, have a movie that centers on Boba Fett realizing something is wrong and hunting down the clues to find the imposter, giving both about equal time in the movie. (that I actually would like to see, in all actuality)

But the Old EU was never ever ever considered Canon in the same sense as the movies. Disney moved the old EU to legends so it could write new stories without dealing with the work of previous authors and so on. But it made it clear that going forward there would be no separation like which existed before that only the movies and TCW were set in stone. All of it is canon.

The might change things as you say but the implication of their actions so far is to treat developments outside of the films as part of a unified continuity. If they wanted flexibility they would have said all the old EU is myths and all the new non movie stories are legends but only the movies count for Canon.

I'd rather see something like the new Boba already operating in the galaxy after having killed the old one and getting into a heist/mission with some of old-Boba's former colleagues. He plays it cool but they eventually figure out he's someone else; the backstory of old-Boba's demise is slowly revealed. The third act features new-Boba tracking down and "silencing" anyone who knows the truth about him while still completing the MacGuffin mission; in the end, there is now only the one and only Boba Fett.

"Myths" and "legends" are the same thing. Really, only the movies do still count when it comes to the movies. When it comes to the rest of the canon, everything now fits into their new hierarchy (though some cracks are already beginning to show; that's a discussion for a different thread). When it comes the actual movies though, the only events that matter are what happened on screen. The rest of the canon can and will reference the movies and itself, but the movies will undoubtedly only ever refer to themselves. They are not trying to make movies that only hard-core fans like us will enjoy, they are making movies that everyone can understand and immerse themselves in.

I'm glad to see in at least one instance, that cooler heads prevailed with regard to the "trolling" issue. Far too many people attach that tag (which I think should be done away with entirely) to someone with whom they disagree. It smacks of certain folks who are no longer here, in part, because they labeled everyone with that rating (and could not be respectful).

Respectful disagreement and debate should never amount to trolling. As you all figured out, use the "disagree" rating instead. Bravo.

For what it is worth @Snazel, I hardly think you are "unpopular for [your] opinions" here (although we all unknowingly present an unpopular opinion from time to time). To the contrary, I find you to be one of the most insightful, well-reasoned posters among our ranks.

But watch, I'll probably get hit with the trolling tag for this... :p

I've been endorsed by Dark Toilet. I am free. :)

Thanks dude, I do love good debate and try to play nice. So I appreciate the time and effort to let me know, I'm not peeving everyone off.

But I need to be sensitive that for some fans, all aspects of Star Wars are sacred and should be regarded with reverence and my snark is deeply off key for them. Referring to a key scene in Episode III as "giant bubble gum opera scene", is not going to win a lot of friends here. So I understand the dismay my posts sometimes engender.

For what it is worth I like canon and I some of the novels and various Wiki pages that tried to document the canon as best as possible. I even like fan lore, and worked on RP projects to develop it. I've seen raging, nasty debates over what is and what is not canon. I understand and admire the appeal of lore. I happen to really like the original KOTOR I and the lore surrounding it - a lot, even the Infinite Empire, the largest, wonkiest Deus Ex Machina concept ever. I have reams of my own fan fiction, and actively seek other fan fiction out. It's why I love fake trailers, that's all they are is just fan fiction.

I also don't think Max von Sydow is Boba Fett, but I like how we don't know and I think all options are open to who he represents. I think he still *could* be Boba Fett and canon won't get in Disney's way if that's where they want to take the character. Indeed, I caution all fans of canon that the very concept of it is a fan concept. It can and will get flushed and rebuilt whenever the business needs require it.

If the original Crisis On Infinite Earths and Anti-Monitor taught us nothing, it is that simple truth. :)

    @Snazel

Yeah, not unpopular at all, in fact, the references and perspective are pretty near my own, leading me to assume we must be around the same age.

I agree that myths and legends are the same thing my point was if they wanted to keep things other than the movies on a different level of canon hierarchy they could have. I used myths and legends simply to differentiate the fact that Disney wants their new comics books games and so separate from the old EU. When they made the move with the EU they made a solid point that their storytelling group would view things as a single continuity.

What I'm arguing though is that while the new EU is "solid" (though I don't think the old EU was a porous as it's made out to be), the movies are still the movies and will continue to be made so that the only things a viewer needs knowledge of beforehand are the previous movies. Here's two examples:

    1. In the old EU, "Shadows of the Empire" was as close to "movie canon" (or "G level" canon), as a story got. It filled in exactly what happened between ANH and ESB. However, reading it was not a prerequisite for watching RotJ. The book referenced the movies, but the movies ignore the book.

    2. In the Marvel cinematic universe, we have this nice little show called Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The show goes out of its way to reference the movies, it even fills in some plot holes here are there (Project Theta anyone?). However, the movies have yet to acknowledge the show or its characters; watching the show enhances the movies, but again it is not a prerequisite to understand what is going on.

This is how I see the new canon of Star Wars. We're getting stories that may (or may not) enhance what we are seeing on-screen, but that does not mean that those stories are needed in order to understand what is happening. As @Snazel has said many times, canon is largely a fan construct; if you want to consider all the new stories to be a part of your personal SW saga, they're writing them so as to make it easy for you to do so. Myself? I still consider some things that are now classified "Legends" to be in my canon until proven otherwise.

So all of this is to say: canon is canon until it's not canon. Boba Fett is an unaltered clone of Jango until/if they decide to change that. But if something that big occurs, rest assured it will happen on-screen and not in a novel/comic/video game.

Marvel changes and adapts its canon constantly. The lore of SHIELD is all over the place and really completely rewritten when Captain America 2 came out.

Even Jarvis is in deep transition with his move to Los Angeles and a rumored romance with Peggy Carter. Marvel lore in the TV and cinema are linked, but there's a reboot coming particularly if their plans to transition the Netflix Defenders into the Avengers franchise after Infinity War is over.

Boba Fett can be anyone Disney wants. They might try to jive fully with existing lore, but they might not. Their decision will be factored mostly by what kind of star and look they want for the part, not what all previous lore has said about him.

The problem with canon is the word itself is misleading. Given the subjective perspective all novels and films provide, then we must concede the word is more appropriately "lore". The films to some degree can be considered canon, but even then it's a loose subjective perspective. Leia may plead that Alderaan is peaceful and has no weapons, but we might learn in Rogue One that was a ruse and there's a reason beyond Leia's heritage that Tarkin chose that target.

Not every line in the films has sanctity because not all intelligent creatures tell the truth at all times.

I think you have a very old, respected actor coming in to anchor a part that sets the tone of the film's first act. A sign that the old regime is passing on and needs to pass the torch. They get Max von Sydow to set the Macguffin in motion.

Now he could be General Veers. He could be Lobot. He could be Darth Nonsense from the parody universe created in the Penny Arcade comic. We don't know. Some believe he's Boba Fett, a character that has a history of being peddled to the fans as "critical" but then shows up briefly and then dies. :)
