    Anyone remember when it was said Rian had the crew members watch two particular movies for Episode viii' stone: 12 o'clock high and Letters Never Sent.

    If the current Poe, Leia and Laura Dern rumors turn out accurate, I can see where 12 o'clock high is an influence.
    I wonder where Letters Never Sent would fit in with the story?

    it's a survival film. @Obi-Wan Solo has suggested we may get a scenario in which Rey and Kylo Ren wind up trapped somewhere and have to work together to escape/survive/get rescued.

    maybe our intrepid heroes wind up on a hostile planet terrain cut off from the Resistance.

    I'd say you don't have to worry too much. One of the biggest weaknesses of Jurassic World was the story, which Colin was in charge of. Rian Johnson is creating the story of IX, Colin is simply writing the script.

    The quote that you're talking about, he said he had them watch films that were similar to the script (as an example he gave 12 o'clock high), and films that weren't so similar (the example for this was Letter Never Sent).

    This tells us that 12 O'Clock High should have some good similarities with Episode VIII. I'd put money on the whole "strict General overtakes long-time lenient General and puts the soldiers to work" theme. Laura Dern being the strict General, Leia being the lenient. I'd bet that this will be one of the major conflicts of VIII.
