Ok guys this is a Thread to discuss the new Thrawn book.
What you liked what you didn't theory's about what the book means for the wider Star Wars universe just go wild also this is a spoiler thread so only enter if you have finished the book or don't mind being spoiled.

First of personally I loved it now I don't buy Star Wars books very often heck I think the last one I got was the RotS novel but I really enjoyed this one. Getting to see Thrawn rise from cadet to Grand Admiral was well done & not simple as he maybe a tactical genius but he absolutely sucks at politics & it only thanks to the emperors & ISB connection that save his career from the numerous court martial.

Getting to see Pryces parallel rise to governor made a great contrast to Thrawn a she is all about politics and wasn't afraid to chuck anyone ne who got in her way under a bus.

Anyway these are just my first thought.

Wow... you work fast! The book just came out this morning, didn't it? I downloaded it on audible as soon as I woke up and started listening to it on my way to work. So far so good! I like the way Thrawn ("the castaway") is terrorizing the Imperials. And it is always a pleasure to hear Mark Thompson's voice!

I cheetah for some reason my local book shop had it deliver on friday so I picked it up on Sunday & finished it this morning.

Yes Thrawn vs the imperials was great particuley the bit where a stormtrooper goes missing. "How does a stormtrooper go missing"
Plus it nice to see some imperials who are actually good at there job.

I like how you get inside Thrawn's head as he is observing everyone's reactions / tells throughout a conversation. But does Zahn do that throughout the whole book? I can see that may grow a little tiring... although I suspect it has greater importance later in the book.

Yes his insights into body language continue throughout the book but there are some really good ones layer as he interacts with the higher members of the empire.
Also my friend went to pick up a copy from the same bookshop on Tuesday & they didn't nave any in stock so he has now order his but won't get it till Thursday.

Damn, that was a good book!

Some unorganized thoughts, I will write more when they settle.

I never read the original novels, but, of course, I know everything about them - because Star Wars. :D So, can someone who actually did read them, tell me if I'm crazy - did we just got better, more rounded, dare I say, more human Thrawn?

I really liked the relationship between Thrawn and Eli, the give and take of it and their mutual growth. I like that by the end Thrawn considered Eli his friend. Nightswan was a great foil for Thrawn. I like that we never learned much about him except his aliases until the very end and I was sad that he died. I also like that Thrawn took “To defeat an enemy, you must know them" line directly from his adversary. Their scene together was amazing.

Seeing Coruscant cutthroat politics through Pryce's eyes was great and horrible at the same time. It was giving me whiplash - I went from feeling sorry for her to despising her and back multiple times through the book. The book certainly gives completely new meaning to this Rebels scene:

Thrawn: "The Emperor recently promoted me after my victory at Batonn."
Kallus: "Civilian casualties outnumbered the insurgents at the time."
Pryce: "Acceptable margins, Agent Kallus, for there are no longer rebels in that sector."

The fact that Thrawn wasn't really exiled opens up the whole new bag of space slugs. Chiss believe in the threats lurking in the Wild Space and Unknown regions, so much so the went with Thrawns crazy plan.

The novel made me want at least two new ones: about Thrawn and Anakin and Eli's adventures among the Chiss.

I will write more later, but this is is for now. Everyone should read this book.

I hadn't court up with the latest season of rebels but dam given what happened in the book that's dam cold from Pryce.
The book also reinforces how lucky the rebel crew where to escape Thawn in rebels.

Oh & I loved Thrawns tactics against a island stronghold very effective.

I see what you mean. And the observations are more sparsed out as the book goes on, which is good. Sorry to hear your friend can't get the book yet. Good job on your part getting it early!

I read the original Thrawn Trilogy back in the day, which was awesome. And while Thrawn was one of two major villains in those books, the storyline focused on many other characters and events so you didn't get such an in-depth look at him. I feel like Zahn's portrayal of Thrawn is very consistent throughout, but in this new novel we're just getting a lot more of him and his backstory. Of course, I'm only on Chapter 10 so I may be speaking too soon. I'm loving it so far!

I read only comic adaptation which wasn't very good, but because of that, Wookieepedia and one rereading podcast I know the entirety of the story. I hated C’baoth, lol.

But, it makes sense that I like the story of this novel better because it's completely Thrawn-centric.

Does anyone else think this book is really boring? I'm at chapter 5 and I'm really underwhelmed. I liked the original Thrawn book but this one is just dragging. The Robert Downey Jr Sherlock Holmes bit was interesting at first but now. Ugh. It's getting old and stale and annoying. Please someone tell me this book picks up and gets more fun.

There is more action later on but this is more a character based book in particular Thrawn & Pryce.
Personally I really like these insights into Thrawns character but I can understand that it may not be for everyone

So far I'm not understanding why we are even looking at Pryce's story. It seems like it's just another case of forcing the main male character to share the spotlight a "strong female lead" as it has been with every new Disney comic, novel, movie, TV show, and video game. Hopefully she will be an interesting character but so far, just bland and uninteresting.

I don't want to spoil to much but Pryce story is very much a parallel to Thrawns & is important & IMO is defiantly not another case of a strong female lead being shoehorn in for no reason.

Ok this is going to go up not how the book may link into the ST.
What if this great evil that Thrawn wanted the Empire to help the Chiss with is Snoke & whatever race he represents after all if th Chiss are worried enough to seek help from the empire then it got to be bad.
So Snoke could be doing something similer to what Thrawn does in that he is using the FO to soften up the Republic areas of the galaxy befor the rest of his race turn up to take on very it would also explain why Snoke didn't seam to bothered at the loss of Starkiller base as it just makes it easier to take out the FO after they have done his dirty work by taking out the republic & resistance. Also the events of TFA make it much less likely that the FO Resistance & what remains of the Republic will be to work together when this new threat turns up possible at the end of IX.

I had similar thought, started to write speculation here a few days ago and gave it up as too crazy. Points for having guts to actually come out with it.

The thing is, we are too early into this new Star Wars run for them to make such a big move in THIS trilogy, I think. But give them 5 years and Snoke's people could play perfectly the same role as Yuuzhan Vong did in Legends. Say, our heroes end the First Order and Snoke somehow in this trilogy, but they leave one thread untied, instead of wrapping everything neatly like in ROTJ. They could springboard off the new trilogy out of it in 2025.

I think we will have to see The Last Jedi and IX first, but maybe it is not as crazy as I thought.

Oh absolutely if this did happen it will be at the end of IX as a possible setup for the next trilogy & having a external threat to the GFFA would be something new to film part of the franchise. Also I put it here as this is a nice quite part of the forum & it's lesss likely to be ridiculed to the same extent if I put it on the one of the TLJ threads.

Back to the book do we know how high up the command chain Sloane would be during this book because in my head canon I would love her to have been one of the officers at one of his numerous courts martial.

    Edit for spelling.

I just finished the book and I LOVED it! I didn't know much about Thrawn before I seen him in Rebels, however, this book just made me a die-hard Thrawn fan. I really hope there will be another.

She is probably a couple of years into her first captaincy - she became captain of her own ship permanently in A New Dawn, which is also before Rebels, but Thrawn is a bit closer to the show. I don't know if she is high enough in the hierarchy to attend court marshals. But, if Thrawn lives and lives in Unknown Regions, the meeting between the two would be terrific.

Ok thanks for that info. I must admit I really wanted her to turn up but maybe they thought it would be to much of a fan service thing but if there is anymore Thrawn novels then maybe she will turn up then.
