Why did they use both actors to voice him?

I've been pondering this for a while, in the forceback why did they use both Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor to voice Obi-Wan? Why did they splice Alec Guinness saying "Afraid" to make it seem like he said "Rey" if they used Alec Guinness first they could have spliced him saying "you've taken your first step into a larger world" and just used the "you've taken your first step" and stuck with Alec Guinness, or better yet, have Ewan McGregor saying "Rey, you have taken your first steps".

Was it ever explained why they used both Alec and Ewan? The only plausible thing I can think of with using Ewan's voice is to potentially bring Ewan's Obi-Wan back as a FG or flashback or simple VO what do you guys think?

Their voices are very similar but hey needed to merge the voices to make a more uniform sound from Kenovi's young days until the day he died

Like Anakin's lightsaber, Obi-Wan connects the OT, prequels and now sequel trilogy. And, yes, I do believe that eventually they want Ewan back, though I am not sure if it's for the sequel trilogy or his own movie(s).

Easy simple answer: It's a tribute cameo to both actors who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in both the OT and PT. Possibly the last we'll ever see/hear of Obi-Wan ever again. ;)

    I hope not.
Obi-Wan spin-off movie or Obi-Wan force ghost would be great.

    Obiwan force ghost ?
The only Obiwan force ghost we ever know has been played by Alec Guinness. It would be disturbing to see a Force Ghost in episode 8 played by McGregor.
As disturbing as the one who replaced Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen at the end of episode 6...

Well at last this one had the reasoning that it portrayed Anakin in his last light side form... I agree that a McGregor Obi Wan force ghost would be wrong...

    I disagree.
Force ghosts maybe can take any form they want. They are ghosts.

I agree. Don't change this ghost as well. Leave it Alec Guiness.

I think there is a NICE mystery behind this. For those friends that really don't understand what a ghost is here is the answer below.I just goggle it.
    Question: What is a ghost?

Answer: A ghost - or spirit or apparition - is the energy, soul or personality of a person who has died and has somehow gotten stuck between this plane of existence and the next. Most researchers believe that these spirits do not know they are dead. Very often they have died under traumatic, unusual or highly emotional circumstances. Ghosts can be perceived by the living in a number of ways: through sight (apparitions), sound (voices), smell (frangrances and odors), touch - and sometimes they can just be sensed.

OK...I think we are going to see them in the next movie....Can someone call the ghostbusters???......

The force is a multi-dimensional reality where times and places can all converge together. I feel this trilogy may do a wild exploration of the force in a way that the original trilogy never did.

just think it was quite a nice thing to do, combines the actors brings continuity, and is just generally quite cool.

I just figured it was sort of an homage to both actors. I didn't mind hearing it. It was pretty cool. Maybe in the commentary when the blue ray is released we'll get more detail on the decision to include both actors.

I personally would love to see ewan play Obi-Wan again as well. No matter if it's a ghost in episode 8 or a spin-off.

Here's another possible way to consider the merging of the two voices in a way that could actually serve the story (pending some presently unconfirmed details):
    • Younger Obi-Wan Kenobi points back to his Prequel Trilogy time with Anakin Skywalker.
    • Elder Obi-Wan's voice can remind us of his Original Trilogy link with Luke Skywalker.
    • Together they speak toward what some might consider the next logical progression, if it's indeed true: Rey Skywalker.
