That's tough. The CW era is my favourite to watch on screen, but as to live in...
First, there are more then 3 points in time to live in. There are: TPM, CW, OT, pre-ST and ST.
TPM is like pre-WWI twentieth century - everything is doing great and going forward, but is about to collapse. Great time to live in until it's not.
CW is total war everywhere and all that brings.
OT is Nazi Germany winning WWII. No thanks.
Pre-ST (Bloodline) is galactiv peace with a stagnant, ineffective government, that is incapable of dealing with any major issues and is about to be overthrown.
ST (so far) is war, chaos and anarchy.
So, I'm going for the ST because at least there is an element of surprise and what comes next might not be another period of opression, war and genocide.
    ...
And that, folks, is supposed an optimistic children's fantasy franchise about desert orphans and space wizards.

There's only so much they can show at a children's tv show. Even the Umbara arc episodes, that made me go "WTF, is this meant for kids?!" was followed by a cheerful message saying "Hey kids, remember how your favourite teacher got substituted?". We'll need to wait for an adult book, that could show the real impact of the war on the civillians.

I've begun reading Dark Disciple today and in the first chapter the Separatists completely destroyed a population of a whole planet because its denizens didn't want to join them, so yeah, matters could've gotten pretty bad.

More genocide than. All this franchise needs is some organic invaders from outside the galaxy for a complete picture. Oh, wait...

I see it from the other side of the coin. I would choose Aalderan in the timespan between PT and OT and enjoying my life on a highly developped planet with beautiful nature until the big bang (I wouldn't know it before anyway; like @Maximus mentioned in one of his posts above).

This is more the outlook I was approaching it from. Unless you’re nestled securely in the heart of Republic or Separatist territory, your home is possibly up for grabs, making it a potential battle ground. Whether that results in death or displacement, your life will likely be irreconcilably affected for the negative. Death or a refugee, neither one sounds particularly terrific to me.

In the OT, things aren't great, but they're status quo and only getting better. In the ST, there's a whole mess of space Nazis out there that's coming to get you. Easy pick for me.
This is another of my gripes about the prequels. The state of the galaxy was supposed to be so dire that the population would gladly accept Imperial rule if it meant an end to the current situation. But mostly everything seems pretty peachy. Matters never came off as all that desperate to me. Meh, off topic.

I wouldn't quite call that off-topic. But maybe because I want to discuss it a little more.

I completely agree with you. And it really never crossed my mind too much until I saw how things were depicted in TCW.

If I would have endured the Clone Wars and then heard of the "treason" by the Jedi, I probably too would have thought, oooh, Empire! Yeah, let's do that!

I share your sentiment that just from the prequels alone I probably don't get this same feeling though.

    That's pretty fair.

In fact, while many worlds see strife and oppression under the Empire, there's no doubt that it actually improved life on a lot of the subjugated systems, too.

That's why people actually believed in the Empire, and part of what made it so dangerous.

Just as an aside- I don't see that happening with the First Order.

Another thing to consider is that the civilized worlds in the SW Galaxy are way more advanced than we are IRL and thus are way more comfortable to live in. Even a backwater like Lothal seemed better off than half of today's countries. So, any SW era is good place to stay, if your world manages to avoid most of the fighting.

The First Order is essentially a foreign invader to the rest of the (known) Galaxy, making the conflict in the ST politically simplest so far. I hope we get to know what the First Order rule of the galaxy was like.

I get what you mean, but I see it more like the Roman Civil War, or Napoleon's brief return after exile.

It's not so much that this is necessarily a foreign power, but an internal threat that merely incubated externally.

Still, I think that you're right, and essentially that still means that this conflict is still the simplest so far (at least, given what we currently know).

I did say civilized worlds :)

Well yes, it does come down to technicalities, but still - the FO is something that spawned outside the New Republic, covertly built up it's fifth column and then invaded. The latest Poe Dameron comic is a great illustration of what I mean.
The FO doesn't seem any distinct ideology at this point, other then "centralisation" and "we are purer than the Empire". So, it's not like the PT, where internal corruption lead to the fall of democrasy and rise of Bush administration tyranny. It's just some evil force invades and light rises to meet it.
Hopefully, books, comics and the Resistance cartoon will great expand this era. It really needs it.

again, i recognize that this stuff isn't in the movies, but just in point of canonical fact, Bloodline tells us that the New Republic is deeply divided, the First Order is a sanctioned entity (just its scope and its malevolence isn't actually clear). this is corroborated in books like Cobalt Squadron, etc.

the FO were never not known to the NR and while the breadth of their aspiration may have been covert, they themselves did not hide their presence, nor were their initial operations necessarily hidden from the view of the NR.

this is why Leia was leading a Resistance rather than the actual NR armada/legions.
the NR refused to oppose the FO because of their supporters among the senate.

In the Bloodline, if I recall, only FO-affiliated senators were aware of it's existence and Leia only found out that someone was out there. In Before the Awakening Poe was shown a map, devided into "our" and "their" territory - another reason why I consider FO a "foreign country" sort of a threat. I am yet to read Cobalt Squadron though, so maybe I am missing something.
    ...
Actually, it's just accured to me: one of the reasons NR was so unwilling to do anything is that they never had to deal with any "foreign contries" before. Since the Empire fell, it was either the NR or some small independent system or faction. I wonder if they even knew how to conduct diplomatic interactions with somebody of equal size. Yeah, this is definetely a topic worth looking into. Hopefully the new cartoon would shed some light.

more accurately, Leia found out that there was a greater threat at stake.
the FO is literally running around doing their thing like they own the place both prior to and after Bloodline.
the NR considers them a police-force operation.

there are ambiguities here because that threat is coming from the Outer Regions, but within the NR, there are literally stormtroopers policing planets and subjugating others with full presumptive authority while the NR turns a blind eye and quibbles over the politics. wookieepedia calls it a "hermit state" for what that's worth, but the implication seems to be that as a state it exists within the context of the whole (albeit shielded) rather than outside of it.

but that might be getting into hair-splitting.
