In a stunning turn of events, Patty Jenkins herself is saying that, after Wonder Woman 3 was put on ice, she's back developing Rogue Squadron for Lucasfilm.

The comment was made during her appearance at the podcast Talking Pictures where, after host Ben Mankiewicz asked about the once-canned Rogue Squadron, Patty Jenkins said the following:

Rogue Squadron was reportedly shelved a few weeks before it was to enter pre-production, with a previous draft by Matthew Robinson. That happened in the fall of 2021, once it became clear that Jenkins' allegiance was with Warner Bros. and Wonder Woman 3. That movie was eventually also scrapped once James Gunn took over DC Studios and restarted the entire machinery.

Shortly after that announcement was made, Patty Jenkins said on social media that she was back working for Lucasfilm on Rogue Squadron, but reports from a few months later and Kathleen Kennedy herself hinted that this wasn't really happening. Kennedy said in an interview during Star Wars Celebration:

In May, a few days into the WGA strike, she followed up: “Lando is still on the books, and Rogue Squadron is still on the books. We just want them to be great.” Lando was shortly thereafter announced as a feature film, after Stephen Glover slipped in a podcast interview, and it seems like Rogue Squadron was also suffering the same fate back then, with the studio revisiting it.

However, Lucasfilm's priorities at the moment are Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will film this summer in California, and New Jedi Order (w/t), the Daisy Ridley-led movie that takes place 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker. Other projects that remain in development include James Mangold's Dawn of the Jedi (w/t), which he will get to after he wraps the Bob Dylan biopic that starts shooting this month, Taika Waititi's untitled Star Wars film, which he will hopefully tackle after Klara and the Sun, also shooting this spring, Shawn Levy's untitled film, which he will also develop after Deadpool 3 comes out (though not necessarily immediately after, as there could be another project in between), and the aforementioned Lando movie, of which we know nothing.

The next Star Wars movie is currently scheduled for May 22, 2026.

Better that than a crashing disappointment.

I'll be surprised if this ever sees the light of day. It would take a special type of script at this point. With Disney looking for safer bets this doesn't seem to be one that would get people that excited.

I too am in the camp of "I'll believe it when I see it." But I do hope it happens.

It certainly always had potential. Think a Top Gun Mavericky X-wing mission in a galaxy far far away.

I was thinking a throwback to the Battle of Britain......pilots scrambling to their Z-95s (then X-Wings later) to fight off hordes of TIEs.....sweeping score like Ron Goodwin's in the 1969 movie. "'Never in the field of human conflict was so much been owed by so many to so few" - this could be a cool core theme for the movie

Do note: "owing a draft" doesn't necessarily mean it'll go into a production; especially since it's been canceled. That's not necessarily what "finish the deal" means.

The vast majority of films in development don't get made. And there are films that have been released which are the fruition of two, three, four sometimes five different scripts that were in development and either combined or bought up and shelved because they were too similar and/or competed with another script being developed.

We get it that people want actual release dates, film going through the camera and theaters taking bookings before accepting that a movie will be actually be coming out. That's the same deal for literally EVERY movie ever released. I don't recall the act of announcing the development of an idea for a movie to go into production ever being redefined as a promise that the idea they are developing will be exported to the screen without delay, deviation, recasting, reimagining or rewriting etc.

Patty Jenkins was developing Rogue Squadron. After a certain amount of time, development had not produced a script that the director and studio were satisfied with or thought suitable for putting into production. At that stage there is no point to Jenkins hanging around. She could and should take other offers to direct or develop projects. And it follows that her agent and LFL would announce that Jenkins is available for such work. Now that Jenkins has explored those opportunities and fulfilled other commitments, it seems that she and LFL have recommenced development of the idea they aim to produce a movie or a series from.

I don't think it needs to be interpreted as some sort of tumultuous saga of broken promises and failure to live up to misleading hype the way it has by many people. In the past there have been some unscrupulous, feckless and fickle producers who have turned development into a nightmare. Wasting people's time "developing" a movie and then throwing that work out in favour of their own half assed concepts (but stealing all the best ideas from the "developed script anyway) and hiring hacks to complete and just put any movie out. Or even actively disrupting development out of pure ego. Look up Giller and Hill and the way they treated virtually everybody who worked on Aliens and Alien 3. But that seems very far removed from the scenario at LFL and with Rogue Squadron. If it wasn't then we would probably have seen Rogue Squadron released last summer. "Exec produced" by Abrams and helmed by the director of Prey or The Northman or something like that.

The issues I have with the current LFL announcements are; first and foremost, I was looking forward to Benioff & Weiss take on Star Wars, it seems they turned it down due to the toxic Star Wars fanbase and a better offer from Netflix. Years later, we're informed that LFL turned their pitch down simply because they didn't like their First Jedi idea/script( which is astonishingly similar to Mangold's current Star Wars pitch) Kevin Feige, President of Marvel studio, who is a huge Star Wars fan had an idea for a film, years later we learn he can no longer take on the project which wasn't a surprise at all due to his prior obligations .

Taika Waititi is working on a Star Wars film; however he has several films scheduled before taking on his Star Wars project. Donald Glover is attached to a Lando series on Disney+, but now its supposedly a film, no confirmation on that, yet Glover continues to work on other film projects, most recently a new Mr. & Mrs. Smith series for Amazon Prime. James Mangold, director of Logan and latest Indy film has a Star Wars project planned that i mentioned earlier being similar to B&Ws idea. Shawn Levy is preparing for a Star Wars film, yet he may have one more film after Deadpool 3 before he begins work on his announced Star Wars film. Daisy Ridley has a New Jedi Order film with script issues, and now it seems that the Mandalorian & Grogu film will supposedly be released before Ridely's film...

What is going on LFL? ( I don't want to blame LFL maybe its SWNN and Media releasing articles on all these film rumors every other day, I recall Bob Iger stating these film announcements must stop) When an Official poster and release date is announced I'll believe any so called film announcement, but for now I believe there will not be a new Star Wars film anytime soon maybe we'll get one in the next decade or so ( George Lucas Stated Star Wars films should be released every ten years and I'm fine with that...) New Star Wars film announcements will inevitably continue... stay tuned.

Letting it be known that certain people are speaking to or currently working with a studio isn't really an announcement. It's just how the industry works.

There's nothing special or unique about Lucasfilm letting it be known who they have employed. The difference is the intense scrutiny and red hot anticipation of the fans.
