Following recent news about Patty Jenkins' departure from Wonder Woman 3, the director has posted an update on social media to explain and correct some of the information that has been published in the trades. In it, Jenkins confirmed that, with Wonder Woman 3 now in the rearview mirror, she has signed a new deal with Lucasfilm and is actively developing her upcoming Star Wars movie, Rogue Squadron.

Jenkins explained that she had originally left Rogue Squadron after she realized filming couldn't begin as soon as she'd hoped (for unclear reasons). Hoping not to delay Wonder Woman 3 any further, she moved back to the DC camp and started developing that film -- when that happened, Lucasfilm asked her to return to Rogue Squadron once she'd completed work on Wonder Woman 3. A new deal was signed and is still in place, with her saying 'that project has been in active development ever since.' She is then quick to emphasize that one can never know whether it will happen or not until the process is complete.

    Here is her full post:

The timeline of events is currently unclear, as is the level of 'active development' the movie is in right now. When the project was stalled (news came out about it in the fall of 2021, but it's possible it'd happened earlier), a treatment had already been submitted, co-written by Patty Jenkins and Matthew Robinson. Maybe there was a draft of the script in place too, since in early July 2021, she said that they were working very hard on the movie and completing the screenplay. Jenkins had also hired a production designer (Wonder Woman's Aline Bonetto), and pre-production was reportedly weeks away from starting.

At that point, according to Jenkins' letter, something changed that pushed the film down the line. In a recent episode of The Hot Mic, Jeff Sneider said that her story treatment had issues, which could have prompted Lucasfilm to halt development until they had a script in better shape. It's also possible that around that point they started having conversations with Damon Lindelof, whose Star Wars film is apparently going to be next.

From the looks of things, Lucasfilm remains committed to making Rogue Squadron with Patty Jenkins at some point. With her schedule now freed up, it's possible that they will be accelerating the timeline and knocking down a solid version of the screenplay. However, it's unclear if the film being in 'active development' means that she and Robinson (and perhaps some other screenwriter too) are working day and night on a new draft, or if they are simply having monthly lunches at the Lucasfilm headquarters to discuss possibilities for the story.

Rogue Squadron was originally scheduled to hit theaters in December of 2023. This past September, Disney finally took it off its official schedule of upcoming theatrical releases. The next Star Wars film to debut in theaters will likely be the yet-untitled, Damon Lindelof-written, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy-directed project -- Disney has reserved a date in December of 2025 for an untitled Star Wars film.

As a long time Wonder Woman fan, since the Linda Carter TV show in 1975, I used to watch the show after school, and later I collected the WW comic book when Brian Bolland illustrated the covers; anyhoo, WW84 was a complete utter disappointment.

I was looking forward to seeing WW in her golden outfit, I never thought I'd see WW wear her golden outfit for live action, I was so excited for WW84... I can only compare it to Joel Schumacher's Batman and Robin 1997 disaster, its that bad...

WW84 was so bad it reminded me of Batman and Robin, that awful film... anyway, I'm not excited for Rogue Squadron with Patty Jenkins directing. My expectations are extremely low at this point, so if its any good I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Cool stuff. I say, full steam ahead and good wishes to everyone involved with Rogue Squadron. I, for one, can't wait to see it :D

TBH I was not sad when I thought this movie was canceled. I’m not really familiar with Patty Jenkins, but Disney’s track record overall with SW is, well, bad.

I’m worried that people might confuse this movie with the one good Disney SW movie (Rogue One) because their names are similar.

I want Rogue Squadron to be good, but WW84 left a bad taste in my mouth. I wish Jenkins the best. I'm hoping for a great film. I'm just being honest about WW84.

Wonder Woman only wears or unleashes her golden outfit in the comic books at a real dire moment, so I thought this film would execute that effort.

The villain in WW84 was as bad as Jamie Fox in Amazing Spiderman 2. I thought Nolan proved to the world, that comic book characters can be taken seriously, but Jenkins just directed the actors into goofiness and camp. She created a film that set back the comic book film genre.

They say the book is always better than the film. Now I can say the comic books are better than the film.

I've been collecting comic books since the 1980s, I usually pick up the books of the writers and artist that I admire.

They write for an intelligent audience, look up Alan Moore or Frank Miller.

I rarely see children buying comic books, children are playing video games.

Young adults and adults that grew up with comic books are avid comic book collectors. It is an expensive hobby.

Comic books are $3.99 to 7.99 an issue so it's an expensive hobby. The only children I see at comic books shops are there with their parents, which is rare.

Outside of the United States, comic books are considered an art-form. The US still has a stigma, even though children do not buy comic books. they still connect comic books and animation for children which is ridiculous.

Comic books and animation... is art... Japan understands that, get onboard US...

I adored WW 2017, and while I don't think WW84 was good by any means, I don't hate it looking back nor do I think it deserves the hate it gets. (Although, IMO, the movie should have been set in the Post-JL world, and BatFleck should have been a main character.)

Anyways, Rogue Squadron still has a chance of being good, so long as Patty knows what she's doing and those around her can help point her in the right direction.
