SPOILER A Sneak Peek at the Opening Crawl?

The word count of the first 6 movies opening crawls range from 75-83 with 79 as the average. This new one is only 57. This is far from disproving the new crawl, but it seems uncharacteristically small.

Lots of games/book/comics have their own crawls as well.

Newer generations are less patient and they might have a super small crawl on purpose. If I had to bet I'd say 80% chance this is the full crawl, 20% chance the movie has a slightly longer version, that they don't want to give away yet.

 

Might be edited down to just the first sentence of each paragraph of the crawl...

 

Having worked with Lucasfilm licensing before, you can bet that at the very least, they approved this Product Specific Packaging crawl for consistency with the official Movie Crawl.

But as others have said, it is too short and the structure is inconsistent with prior crawls.

Here's an example for what the official crawl might look like - even if the contents aren't exactly correct:

Typically 3 (edit - they have always been 3) blocks with some use of ALL CAPS, each block with a sentence describing a point of the backstory. Ending with a trailing "..."

 

Have there been four? I thought it was always three "paragraphs."

The crawl's obviously always been three paragraphs, hovering around 80 words, with an absolute range of 75-83 words, so this very likely isn't the entire thing, but it's probably somewhere in line with it.

 

Great find! As others have stated, it's too short for an opening movie crawl, but it's most likely edited down to prevent spoilers since this toy is probably going to be released before the film/major plot points of the film. Now, I know there are going to be people telling you that some Star Wars products have their own 'storyline', and while that may be true, this is no doubt film related merchandise, and thus it keeps consistent to the the film it's based upon. Disney is not a stupid company, they know not to reveal pivotal plot points to the public before a movie they are trying to keep under wraps about releases. That's why all the character descriptions on the toys that recently leaked are so vague.

 

At the very least, we have a summary of the state of the galaxy during TFA here. Great find.

Someone in Lucasfilm has to approve all packaging and verbiage, I know this from personal experience working with them, long ago, far away. Product descriptions, logo placement and the style guides on these are rigid.

I like the "It's a time of uncertainty," but the rest of it is far too generic to stage a film, but that's a good hook to use for the first phrase out of the gate.

I think the Resistance are fighters in First Order territory and the New Republic has only marginal control over the galaxy, the Senate not recognized in a lot of systems and Republic credits worthless almost everywhere. The First Order are spreading and corrupting officials like the Constable.

One key objective of the Resistance, is trying to win Yavin IV back to the New Republic, my humble guess there and the First Order wants to end the Resistance by demonstrating their new super weapon.

So very uncertain times indeed, cool stuff.
