A Very Interesting Interview with Mark Hamill about Differences in Original and Prequels

I love this interview.

 

It will be interesting if there is good comedy in the ST. Remember Kershner said, "We needed humor but not gags."

Rey can be funny with an English accent (Remember Monty Python, Benny Hill, Ricky Gervais), she just needs good material.

There was plenty of witty banter - what movie were you watching?



I bumped this because this is such a great illustration: a lot of times when people "criticize" these movies, their descriptions are ENTIRELY divorced from reality - that series of movies, that revolves around a tax dispute, has nothing but dry exposition for dialogue, and no witty banter anywhere, only exists in their own heads.

Which would kind of lead to interesting questions about the psychology behind this, and why people would go out of their way to invent nonsense about a series of movies they're claiming to have been "disappointed by" or "wished to be better" - if it weren't such a common behavior otherwise (see GoT and the "R&R thread").

 

SLJ spoke like that because he's SLJ and no one questions him and I took HC's american accent was because of Luke and Leia and probably to also show that he's not as "proper" sounding as people with a british accent since he comes from a backwater planet...I think there was witty banter, too, but the lines weren't written so well but I was able to understand what they were trying to do...could the lines have been written better? OF COURSE THEY could have but it had just as much to do with the actors than the director.

 

Well yeah that was kind of the idea, HC in Ep3 could also be said to have been a (posh) mix between Luke and Solo - however, they forgot he was supposed to turn into a Shakespearean RP villain

I guess that was a literal plot "hole" left by the ESB twist, that could've been filled in / solved somehow - instead of piling on more and more contradictions on top: Luke's father was supposed to, in some form, have grown up with Owen and then moved out, so maybe acquired the refined accent in that process?


Also, Padme spoke American too - certainly in 2/3, not sure about TPM w/o make-up; don't think there's any particular "justification" behind that, Naboo's got Bibble who's RP and Panaka/RicObvius who're American, so I guess Naboo's just a mix.

Anyway, accents have nothing to do with any of this.

This is of course the "quintessential RLM fan" - fancies himself an independent-minded "critical thinker" who "understands Film", while clearly receiving his absurd over the top views involving "complete lack of emotion character drama" from online critics and other fanboys on internet forums.

Same thing with people like TAA or HelloGreedo - all those smug phrases like "first I thought ..., but upon viewing things objectively, I'm forced to admit that ..." and then they start talking complete nonsense.

You falsely think that the caller is a lucid individual who "hits the actor with the truth", and Hamill tries to be diplomatic and beats around the bush.

In reality, the caller is a smug clueless wainker and what Hamill is saying is reasonable and nuanced.

The fact that Rey is using an english accent is meant to underline the fact that she is 'displaced' from the 'centre'. People at the 'centre' in star wars speak with a British accent, at the periphery people speak American english or other accents and languages. In the movie we find Rey with a british accent (the centre) in an environment which embodies the periphery (Jakku/ Junkyard). It is very intentional and you will see how that works out in TLJ
