While doing some research for the possession thread I came across a short story by Matthew Stover in Star Wars Insider #130 titled "The Tenebrous Way". Darth Tenebrous, a Bith, was Plagueis's Master who was killed by Plagueis at the beginning of the Novel "Darth Plagueis". The short story tells how Tenebrous bioengineered a variant form of midi-chlorian capable of passing on his consciousness, in which he infects Plagueis stowing away in his veins. Then Tenebrous has visions if Plagueis's doom and vacates his body. He is then trapped reliving his death and transference within the buried depths of Bal'demnic.

Bal'demnic according to wookiepedia is a oceanic world with rocky tropical islands, high cliffs, and narrow rock formations. It seems to be a perfect fit for the Skellig Michael set.

Could Darth Tenebrous be The Ancient Fear? or just the basis for a rewritten villain of Episode VII?

I have left links to Wookipedia for more details on Tenebrous and Bal'demnic, or see the possession thread or planets of Episode VII thread.

Skellig Michael definitely fits the description of Bal'demnic you've provided, but the bigger question is how much JJ, Mickey Mouse, and the Powers That Be want to borrow from the EU. My sense: as little as possible. Their first priority is making sure that this movie is a world-wide box office record smasher. They're not going to borrow heavily from the EU just to please the Star Wars nerds like us. An Easter egg here and there maybe, but not a major plot point.

Also, casual Star Wars fans - who I define as those who have seen Episodes I-VI and nothing else - barely know anything about Darth Plagueis, say nothing about his master.

So I think it's a cool theory, but unlikely.

I like this theory. However, i like it more with Plagueis having learned how to "possess" than Tenebrous because Tenebrous was just not interesting or imposing enough for me. I think Plagueis, having been introduced in ROTS, makes a ton of sense.

Well, using Plagueis is not borrowing from the EU and don't forget that Lucas guided the Darth Plagueis book as he was writing the treatments for Eps 7-9. IMO the Tenebrous bit in Insider is an extension of this, although EU, has more potential since it seems to have been derived from Lucas' thinking.

I like it. I think I heard somewhere the GL had some say about how the Pleagis book was done maybe because he had planned on the tie in. Just a shot in the dark. But the idea is very intriguing. Well done sir

Bal'demnic has a rich supply of cortosis ore, that is what Tenebrous and Plagueis was mining there. Cortosis was used in weapons to short out lightsabers and also in the armor of shadowtroopers, which had been rumored for Episode VII. Imagine troopers that were somewhat immune to lightsabers.

fascinating - not something i have read about before. good OP.

it definitely fits with the Skellig Michael shoot.

I'm sticking with the idea that Skellig was used for a dantooine location... a crystal cave type journey for daisy ridleys character - overseen by Luke as part of jedi training. Obviously thats me taking a needle and thread and stitching together the photos from Skellig, Greenham Common and my unhealthy overplaying of Kotor lol

Tenebrous has already been a movie you guys can not believe you missed him. Watch A New Hope and you will see him in the bar scene enjoying his retirement.
