Chatted up a fellow SW fan today (quit lurking and join if you're not already on here!) and he brought up something very interesting.

Might Vader have had a black box somewhere on his body or in a secret location elsewhere (By black box, I'm referring to the box which contains all the transmission and electrical data aboard a plane... the thing crash investigators search for in order to discover what may have went wrong, causing the plane to malfunction.)

If there really is a rule of two (and it's not a lie sold to Palps and co. by Plageuis wholesale) wouldn't it make sense for the master and/or apprentice to have the equivalent of a black box for the dark side of the force? A collection of Holocron recordings by Bane/Plageuis/Palps/Vader would come in handy just in case both master and apprentice were somehow killed together.

Where would they hide such a box? Sith homeworld? On their persons?

Or maybe they are such a selfish lot, they wouldn't care about future Sith, so why bother with a Rosetta Stone Dark Force Holocron collection?

    What do you guys think?

I think there would be some library... a theoretical box none-the-less, regardless of size... but yes, one would say such a thing would exist somewhere...

I think in the old "canon" of expanded universe games and books etc... that the Sith did have holocrons like the Jedi. Is this correct?

I think they would. I like the idea of holocrons as they make sense logically speaking and are great story-telling devices as we can be given ancient exposition without having "flashbacks." IN E7 I wouldn't mind seeing some holocrons, Jedi or otherwise with maybe an Obi-Wan hologram like in Rebels.

Holocron is just short for holographic chronicle, kinda like a SW blog... everyone had them, they weren't specific to Jedi... just the Jedi holocrons had "ancient lore"

Interesting if they recorded light saber fights / important events. Would be fun if the grave digger watches a hologram of the ROTJ fight, to see Vader lob Palpatine over the edge.

While I didn't see a plethora of those annoying video drones flying around, but one would assume that if you were going to record events, that would be one of the ones you would want to capture...

Hah. I immediately think of the moment in ROTS where Yoda and Obi are able to watch a holographic recording of previous events involving the ruler of the Republic, who they distrust intensely, knighting the person they sent to spy on him, who they distrust intensely, as a Sith... Why someone wasn't monitoring the footage from that camera 24/7 I'll never know...

Personally I'm not a fan of recordings revealing plot points to the audience - it's just a bit of a cheat really.
I mean, if there was something like this that enabled the characters to understand something they couldn't otherwise have known, then fair enough. But it would have to make sense. Like, if there were recordings of Vader's encounters with Luke, it opens up a whole can of worms. Was Vader genuine when he offered Luke the option of joining him and overthrowing the Emperor on Bespin? Or was that what Palpatine told him to say to lure him in? If not, wouldn't it be reckless for Vader to record that conversation? Wouldn't Palpatine be stupid not to keep reviewing those recordings, or allow the recordings to exist without him having access to them?
In this instance, it works better if we presume Palpatine didn't know what Vader was up to (although he may have suspected) because then it is up to us to decide exactly what the dynamic of these relationships is. We have to actually think about it and come to our own conclusion, because there are parts of the Vader/Luke/Palpatine triangle that are intentionally ambiguous.

I'm not against the idea of holocrons and recordings per se, I just think you have to be careful, because you can end up with scenarios like the one in ROTS which just start creating more problems than solutions...

In my view, Vader NEVER really held any strong allegence to the Siths or the concept of having Siths in full control of the entire galaxy. He was so distraught at how Pademe died(or how he in fact may of killed her) that he let himself surcome to the evil/dark side/Palpatine. He couldn't or wouldn't fight those feelings anymore & chose to side with the new Emperior for the time being(20+ years plus the events ABY).
Vader as we all now know is NOT a Sith(of the Sith race). He had the formal title Lord of the Sith but in truth, I think Darth Vader(slowly returning to Skywalker) wanted to amass control of the entire galaxy himself. Gaining power & dominance over BOTH the Sith forces & the Jedi Order(what was left after Order 66).
