First off, with everything we know about The Force Awakens it seems like an absolutely epic film. But if your like me, when rumors started circulating that Luke's ESB lightsaber magically floats from outer space and finds its way into the hands of TFA's protaganist, you got a wee bit nauseated. Questions like this come to mind: "How is that possible?", "Abrams and company couldn't come up with anything better than that?". I hate to be that guy, but lets face it, the odds of the lightsaber's voyage from Bespin to Jakku are like 3,720 to 1. If your struggling with accepting this plot line, read on. This is how I moved past solemnly accepting this plot (like I do Jar Jar, or the singing alien in blu-ray ROTJ) to genuinely loving the idea.

In Star Wars, the Force is a living thing with a will of its own. It doesn't matter if your Luke and you believe in it the first time Old Ben mentions it, or if your Han and you never accept it, the Force influences you and everything else in the universe. Lets look at some of my personal favorite coincidences in Star Wars

Episode 1: Of all the places in the galaxy Qui-Gon could have landed the busted Nubian after escaping Naboo, they park it not only on Tatooine, but the outskirts of the town where The Chosen One lives. WHAAAT!????

Episode 3: We find out Chewy and Yoda were friends. Then later Chewy and Luke are friends. Then Luke and Yoda are friends. And none of them ever new they had important mutual friends. (Ok I know thats knipicking)

Episode 4: C3P0 and R2, carrying Death Star plans, get ejected off of Leia's ship in escape pod. Of all the places on Tatooine, escape pod lands near home that Luke, Anakin, C3P0, and R2 have lived in or visited at some point. Jawas abduct droids and sell them to Luke, the protaganist of the OT. Luke uses Death Star Plans to blow up Death Star. You've gotta be kidding me right?

Episode 5: Vader is tirelessly searching for Luke and the Rebels. Empire launches probe droids to find them. Of all the planets, or even total surface area of Hoth, a probe droid lands a couple hundred yards away from Luke on tauntaun. NOOO WAAAY!!!

The point is, we are stressing about the ESB lightsaber landing on Jakku, when in fact we should be more surprised that when the lightsaber falls out of the sky it doesn't hit Rey square in the head. I mean come on, is the lightsaber thing driving the story in TFA any crazier than the coincidence I mentioned for Episode 4. Like I said the Force is alive guys. We shouldn't look at any of these things as coincidences, but as the Force working in mysterious ways. A lot of times we say "I want someone to prove that the Force is stronger than the Death Star like Vader says"........Well there you go guys. The Force is stronger because it had a plan for Luke, and through a series of unbelievable coincidences it led farm boy Luke off of Tatooine and into an X-wing to destroy the Death Star. Isn't that awesome. And its AWAKE for Episode 7 and through very extraordinary coincidences, its leading Rey, Fin, and Poe on what will be an unbelievable journey. Let's put aside our skepticism and enjoy the ride

    Peace

I tend to take a little bit of an opposite approach to most complainers. Some complain that the stormtroopers never hit the main characters, and are the worst shots.

If the star wars universe was real, we'd only tell and glorify the spectacular stories, not the boring ones. Maybe the storm troopers stopped dozens of prior infiltrators. We don't center a movie around Dak, who dies early in the battle of hoth, we tell the stories of the survivors.

Granted, you can only stretch things so far before your suspension of disbelief breaks, but this mind set helps me enjoy movies.

I don't really see these two as coincidences.

Episode 1 isn't a tough to swallow coincidence for two reasons.
    - The characters around Anakin are only important because they find him. It could have been years earlier or later by any Jedi. If Ki Adi Mundi found Anakin when he was 4, the movie would be about them and not Obi Wan and Qui Gon and SW history would have been much different.
    - They establish that Anakin should have been found earlier. We are brought into his story after someone finally notices he is strong with the force. Pretty much the opposite of coincidence. I guess they could have shown him living on Tatooine for 9 years or so to show all the time where he wasn't being found by the Jedi, but that would be pretty boring.

Episode IV is also caused by plot. Leia is coming to find Obi Wan. So she is headed directly for the spot on Tatooine. So, it makes sense that when the droids land on the planet, the Tantive IV happened to be above that area of Tattoine as it is where they were headed.

I always say the will of the Force causes some of the crazier things to happen haha but in all seriousness there is a crazy semi-scientific explanation for Star Wars and movies as a whole.

In some interpretations of the multiverse theory of Quantum Physics there are plenty of universes where you have died but you are only aware of one in which you are alive. In that sense when we watch a film or play a video game we exist in a world where the protagonists (usually) survive and succeed. There are plenty of universes where they died and/or failed but we don't see those universes. I would say Bioshock: Infinite is the closest well known example of creators playing to that theory.

Well Qui-gon actual offers that finding Anakin was the will of the Force suggesting that yes he was found precisely BECAUSE he was the chosen one. Fate is actually invoked in the script.

As for the Yoda issue. Does Luke speak wookie? Also aren't there assumed to be hours of time characters spend together off camera between movies and so on. Perhaps they chatter on about it via 3PO over blue milk.

The fact that the lightsaber comes into Rey's possession causes her to go on this journey, and that's what makes her a hero. There's no coincidence there, it's cause and effect.

What exactly do you mean by this? Star Wars kind of does not really rely on heavy scientific fact or the theoretical stuff. How would you relate this to SW.

Oh I apologize you must've misunderstood my point.

What I was talking about is the meta-fictional/cognitive idea that when we watch a film we are watching the universe where potentially our heroes won and the are other conceivable universes where say Luke missed his last shot on the Death Star or where one of Carl's previous attempts to kill the gopher succeeded thus he isn't there to detonate the explosion to knock Danny's putt in

That's how I feel trying to understand the whole idea of space being a Two-Dimensional hologram right now. It supposedly solves the disparity between Quantum and Gravitational physics but it involves a lot of theoretical stuff that requires a base knowledge of physics I don't have
