In a recent interview with Variety, Daisy Ridley reflected on her experience as a female lead in a major franchise. While Star Wars has always dealt with passionate fan opinions, it goes without saying that the sequel trilogy introduced divisiveness among the fandom that reached never-before-seen heights. As Rey, Ridley was central to all of this reactionary emotion, be it love and adoration or mockery and downright cruelty.

When asked if she had any advice for female (or non-binary) actors joining the Star Wars universe, Ridley said:

We often hear actors new to Star Wars remark on the awe they feel to be joining such a legendary universe. As fans, we love to see this excitement and respect, something akin to our own experiences as viewers. And while we all hold strong opinions, and the majority of fans hope to create a safe and welcoming space, we recognize this bright-eyed enthusiasm and acceptance doesn’t extend to every corner of the fandom.

Speaking specifically about Amandla Stenberg’s upcoming debut as the lead in The Acolyte, and the type of response they may receive, Ridley remarked:

[IMG] (L-R): Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae and Director Leslye Headland on the set of Lucasfilm's THE ACOLYTE, exclusively on Disney+. ©2022 Lucasfilm Ltd. & TM. All Rights Reserved.

Despite the fact that it’s one opinion from a single unnamed executive, I can’t help but feel excitement at this praise for The Acolyte. Shadowy underworld, mystery thriller, new Jedi, and probably nefarious Sith plots? You have my attention.

It’s encouraging to see this display of confidence and support between actors. Ultimately, while it shouldn’t be necessary, her advice is worth remembering not only for her fellow actors, but for anyone in this sandbox who may feel like they’re stuck on the fringe – enjoy the universe, enjoy the camaraderie, enjoy each jaw-dropping moment, enjoy Star Wars. As much as you’re able, tune out the noise.

Daisy Ridley is currently promoting her new film Sometimes I Think About Dying, which is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this year.
