Daisy Ridley Talks Star Wars: Episode VIII and Luke Skywalker.

Two weeks ago, principal photography began at Pinewood Studios in London on the hotly-anticipated Star Wars: Episode VIII, as trumpeted by Lucasfilm’s epic announcement video. Some were a little confused by the video’s footage of the “Excalibur” scene from Star Wars: The Force Awakens of Rey returning Luke and Anakin’s lightsaber, wondering whether they were looking at outtakes from Episode VII or new footage being shot specifically for Episode VIII. Now, actress Daisy Ridley has seemingly confirmed to MTV that she and Mark Hamill were indeed re-enacting the now-iconic end scene for the new film.

Me and Mark have been rehearsing a lot, and it’s really amazing,” Ridley said “When we went back to Skellig to do the opening of [Episode] VIII, it was so crazy doing the same scene with a different crew of people. He’s amazing to rehearse with, and I’m very excited to be doing the rest of the stuff. It’s such a good story. Seriously. Luke is so cool in this one. Really.”

The September pre-shoot footage from Ireland’s Skellig Michael Island (aka “Ahch-To” in the Force Awakens shooting script) seems to be setting a new precedent for a Star Wars movie, as all of the previous entries picked up a fair amount of time after the previous installment, ranging from a few months between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi to 10 years between Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, not to mention the decades-long gaps between trilogies. Episode VIII will apparently start right at the moment Rey meets Luke, and then hopefully continue on to her training as the legendary Skywalker’s new Padawan.

    In other news,
Making Star Wars has posted a new Instagram photo (via Jedi Real Estate) of Ahch-To island being recreated at Pinewood, which has been rumored for a while due to environmental and safety issues keeping the filmmakers from doing the extensive shooting the script calls for on-location at Skellig Michael.

Continuing the epic journey of Rey, Finn, Poe, and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the continuing Star Wars saga, Star Wars: Episode VIII is written and directed by Rian Johnson. It welcomes back cast members Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. New cast members will include Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, Academy Award nominee Laura Dern, and newcomer Kelly Marie Tran.

The sequel is produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman and executive produced by J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski.

Star Wars: Episode VIII is scheduled for release on December 15, 2017.

Starting to think Teaser 0 was actually the first ten seconds of the movie.

I hope the movie opens with a pan DOWN to a planet (like in every SW movie besides TFA) and it's Snoke ---in person---"punishing" General Hux & Kylo Ren, who's weakened, while Captain Phasma is in a bacta tank somewhere on the planet which is in the process of being turned into yet another Starkiller Base and then it swipes directly into that circular helicopter pan of Luke Skywalker and Rey's epic stare down...the montage scene with their training takes place over the span of a few weeks but it's really like 9 minutes in the movie while we're cutting around to see what the other characters are developing as people in real time conjunction with Rey until they all meet up towards the climax...

If the new movie starts right where TFA ended, what will be the use of giving us an opening crawl? What are they going to say if we all know what the characters are doing and no time has passed? It would really suck if the opening crawl just told us exactly what we saw in TFA and nothing more.

This is a great point in the saga films every single one has opened, with a crawl; if this movie was to open from the same point what would they be telling us in the crawl? I find that the opening will not be the same as the ending, there needs to be some time that had passed. That was we can establish what has happened since then with Kylo, the Resistance and Luke/Rey. If the started where they ended the film wouldn't seem right to me

You are correct my friend and I feel the same way as the film wouldn't seem right to me as well. How can the movie start where the other left off? Both Rey and Kylo need to start training and before that Kylo Ren needs to be healed. Finn needs healing as well and I seriously doubt that they are going to focus a huge part of the movie by just showing Kylo and Rey training. I'm sure that when this movie starts we are going to be at the point where both of them are at least half way through their training and Finn is already healed. That way the crawl can tell us this info and put us up to speed with what Poe and Finn are doing as well. This seems logic and it wouldn't make the crawl seem totally useless and unneeded.

First of all, we don't know how much time it took from the time SKB was destroyed to when Rey lands on Ach-to. There definitely is a small amount of time that passes. I would think a few weeks at the least. The crawl can still give us information even with only a short time frame between the two movies. We can learn what the states of the Republic, FO and Resistance after the destruction of Hosnian Prime and SKB. It can also give us an idea what are heroes and villains are up to leading into VIII. There is plenty to cover that does more than recap what just happened in TFA

The opening crawl would be very useful in explaining the political upheaval in the galaxy. TFA didn't explain much, but the crawl could explain that the Republic's fleet has been destroyed and what's left of the Resistance is the only thing that's stopping the First Order from creating a 2nd Empire.
