What flavor of Darth Vader do you want to see in the ST?

Lots of chatter regarding a potential 'Zorro hat' approach to Darth Vader. For those who don't want to read 35 pages of speculation: Does the helmet become a tool for the wearer to redeem Vader's legacy? Does the helmet become passed down from generation to generation (think Boba Fett or Assassin's Creed... Diff times/eras but the hood remains slightly tweaked but very clearly of a family... Or think of Matt Wagner's Grendel character)

Now let's play Disney executive. You paid billions for the franchise. Vader is the Saga's single most profitable and iconic property. Do you redeem him and make him a good guy? Does that water down the OT, and the character's legacy as the greatest onscreen villain?

    Of course.

But who cares because maybe, just maybe...
existing in a moral gray zone actually makes Darth Vader more valuable? Serving Vader up less as a villain but an anti-hero a la Batman? Less scary but potentially 'cooler' to modern kids than goody two-shoes Luke.

Hell, different versions of Vader wouldn't even have to be full jedi. Some could be Han types, others could be part droid, and we're definitely overdue for a Lady Vader!

Think of the story potential and profit to be made if you could continue to pass Vader on this way. The wearer of the helmet becomes a thorn in the side of both the good and bad because he/she/it knows both factions are corrupt.

Not an easy decision. Vote and share your thoughts below. And may the Force never cease to wake in you!

P.S. For conspiracy theorists out there... @grygry... As in gray.

It's possible Luke or maybe another major character will assume the "Vader" mantle & fight for good instead of evil(dark side).
It may be like the Marvel Comics version of Destro where he wore a huge, heavy silver mask to honor his condemned relative or the Snake-Eyes commando character who wore a black mask because he was seriously disfigured by a helicopter crash.

Luke might need to conceal his appearance since Sith lightening or wounds may injury him like Palpatine in the PT.

I love the idea of a grey Vader. It'll be different enough that it won't tarnish the history of the character and be a nice jumping off point to the future of the sage while keeping what made it great. I even like the idea that eventually there will be a white Vader helmet too. We have to think of long game with Star Wars. If there's no more Darth Vader -- won't it just seem like a faded franchise whose best days are behind them? Nope... Vader must carry on. Imagine a bunch of kids in all different colors of Vader helmets -- it's a great idea and Disney will made hand over fist with the merch.

This isn't a reboot so no Vader in the ST please. I hope JJ makes it a point to honor some aspects of the OT, but ultimately move the story forward. Moving forward means new heroes and new villains. But I wouldn't mine seeing Vader make an appearance in one of the spin off movies!

It wouldn't be a roboot if it's just the costume that's being used. It will be a different character with completely different motivations and backstory. So, you would have new heroes and new villains, just the familiar mask that will be worn by someone different.

This is all speculation from all forum members at this point.
As noted in other topics, the one guy's VO/video on Youtube which was made in 10/2013 really covers many of these same themes/plots.
He stated how a new trilogy should have NEW villians & story arcs but be able to tie ALL the films together into a coherent plot/storyline.
The Skywalkers will be the focal point but how the Force is used or what occurs is yet to be known.

The only way I could envisage Vader working is if either Luke or Leia or their children get exposed to place that is strong in the dark side of the force and he appears in order to taunt them /lure them to the dark side

Vader is dead and will not return, at least the way we know him. He hasn't been seen in 30 years since he died and armor was burned. But what if it looks like he has returned, would the Imperial remnant fear him, since he was the Emperor's enforcer. What if it appears that he cannot be killed like a spectre or phantom. The new Tarkin novel tells us nobody knows where he came from, although Tarkin had his theories, that he appeared out of nowhere. Was he man or machine, of course we the audience knows, but to the galaxy he embodied fear, even to those that were fighting along side him.

Thanks for all the replies! Good stuff... but can you guys look at it from a Disney executive's POV? Divorce yourself from what you personally would like to see happen. How would you leverage Vader and keep him relevant to new generations?

If the Darth Vader mask (and armor) will be worn by someone in The Force Awakens, most movie critics will accuse the Star Wars franchise of lacking originality, and rightfully so. The idea may seem cool to some of us (not me), but the average-Joe moviegoer will think it's lame.

Not the exact same suit. Maybe I wasn't clear. An evolution/tweaking of Vader's getup. One piece potentially ties them together.
