Not to be a d**k here but in German lingo it is Vater where the V is pronounced as an F.
I highly doubt that George Lucas had this meaning in his mind when looking for a title.I could be wrong but did he not make stuff up as he went on in the beginnings?
In so that Vader was to be Lukes father?

Anyways I always had a knack for Darth Hater.So filled with hate and contempt for all, including himself.

As someone mentioned, in German father = Vater.

Based on what I read in The Secret History of Star Wars, Vader would be Dutch (Google translate agrees). Also according to Google Translate, dark would be "donker" in Dutch and "dunkel" in German. I don't remember what The Secret History of Star Wars said about the origin of the "Darth" name but it did say it was originally his first name and not a title and that the idea of him being Luke's Father did not enter into the picture until the writing for ESB, let alone when the name was first conceived.

Yeah, I was thinking along those lines, the only thing I could come up with so far was Darth Van Winkle

I don`t think he would use a title to speak to an old "friend", so it was meant to be a first name at the beginning

 

Sorry, I had German on the brain. I agree Darth was suppose to be his first name. Lots changed after ANH was so successful. As has been pointed out the Emperor did not appear to be a Sith Lord in the novel and it was clear that Moff Tarkin out ranked Darth Vader in ANH. By Empire the Emperor is a sith lord and Vader is his 2nd in command. Based on the Pt it seems odd that Moff Tarkin ever out ranked Vader but it sure felt that way. Also, Vader was not necessarily going to be the primary bad guy in the OT. He became the primary only after he was such a huge hit with fans after ANH was so successful. I have nothing but love for GL but he kinda winged it after ANH became such a huge box office success and sometimes in the PT it feels like he didn't re-watch the OT when he wrote the PT.
